New Members Night Report
What a great night to celebrate our New Members !

We had 38 New Members showup for this event along with 72 Senior Members to welcome in the New! Thank you to all of our members for participating in this event and making our new members feel welcome.

I would like to thank Katie and Juan, along with all of their food and beverage staff, who served all that attended. I would also like to thank Lidia and Roxanne for preparing all the New Members Packages.  Gord Burt worked endlessly to call people by phone if they had not responded to his email to ensure that they were coming. Mike Hren did an amazing Jog as host, as did Doug Heldman, Cam Jackson, Jarrod Armstrong, Camille Clark, Drew Roberston, and Tim Hill to make sure the event ran smoothly.

I would also like to thank Nancy Ogden who represented the Cruising Fleet and Colin Andrews who represented the Sailing Committee, and Donna Miller who was there taking photos of the evening. Please find many more photos in the Gallery Link

Thank you all so much,

Bob Wilson

Work Party - Saturday
The BIG DAY is Finally Here!

The Spring All Day Work Party will take place from 9 AM - 4 PM Saturday, April 9!  We have lots of jobs for everyone - indoor and outdoor.

Now is your chance to get those contribution hours in... thereby avoiding the dreaded end-of-December email desperately asking for jobs to get your hours in for the year (awkward!).

Come up to the clubhouse in the morning to check in and say hello. Let's have a great work party (and how could it be anything but great?  As my daughter says: I know, right??)

REMINDER - if you would like your tire lines attached to your tire, please bring your lines down Saturday morning.

White Wall
  • Our first priority for the day is to continue work on the white wall (now there's a wall we can get behind!)
Back Fill Trench
  • We would like to try for two shifts, morning and afternoon
  • 2 - 3 people at the wall
  • 6 people to move the wheel barrows
  • 18 people in total
Cap Rail
  • We will have two teams with Danno H leading one team, Al J leading the other (both welders - skilled labour!)
  • We need 3 helpers on each team
  • 6 guys to help move the rails
Weld Extension Red/Green Docks Rods
  • Another skilled labourer extraordinaire - Allen L will lead, and will need 2 people to help him
Other Jobs Include
  • Inside polishing, window cleaning, furniture cleaning
  • Outside yard work, leaf raking, ground cleaning
  • Clear all ways of debris
  • Painting, varnishing, sanding  (WEATHER DEPENDENT)
To sign up:
  • Go into the Job Jar and look for jobs under Spring All Day Work Party. If you have any questions, please send an Email.

Launch Minus Four Weeks!

As I write this on Sunday evening, the snow is falling but we are still stoically preparing for launch, notwithstanding that it seems more like the first snows of December...

(Flashback, with apologies to Clement Moore - Twas the Night Before Christmas)

Twas the month before launch, while through the yard,
All yachts were resting, but those being repaired,
Launch planning was building, the work we share,
In hopes that soft-water would be fair.

Members were resting quiet in the shade,
With visions of voyages to be made.
And mama in her gear, and I in my sou'wester
Had settled our credit cards, before the next squander.

When through the ether arose such a clatter,
Twas the arrival of John Moody's e-letter,
"This to request your valuable contribution ....",
As without, the boats, will not be in motion.

Launch will be Saturday, the 30th of April,
So lets collectively set our will,
To ensure that first boats fly at 8 o'clock,
And the rest of the day will go tick tock.

First boats will fly at 0800 but Small Crane will be doing some pre-work re the ramps starting at 0730.
John Moody will be emailing his usual invitations to crane crew this week. Rebecca has already been assembling her boat rider team, and Carolyn will be tapping shoulders to join the DockStaff (aka DockLadies) shortly.

Many sundry small groups are raring to go (donuts, cradle dismantling, etc):
  • I will be distributing and posting first boats in toward the end of April. Please watch for this, as it is important that the early boats are ready to go on schedule.
  • For Safety reasons, we are asking that all boats, especially those navigating the Coatsworth Cut, have a portable VHF on board, charged and working. We will have a look-out on BayBelle point with a VHF, in case of engine malfunction, or any other issues. This will be especially important in case of inclement weather or if you neglected to refuel in the fall!
  • All boat riders and skippers must be wearing PFD's while moving boats... the water is cold.
  • Dock Staff will be really appreciative if your dock lines are installed PRIOR to launch. Fiddling with this as you arrive at your dock consumes time and, if there is windy weather, the Dock Staff won't be able to hold your boat. They do a great job welcoming you to your summer home but their attention rapidly shifts to the next boat on their lists. If you must do dock lines on the day of, bring along additional crew so that you can be self-sufficient, please.
Thanks,

Roy Little

 Free Float Flowers

Hello ABYC,

The Easter Parade is over and just in time for the snow to return. Were we ever lucky!

There are four bags of leftover paper flowers from the Easter Parade and, since Molly likes fresh ones for next year, the flowers are Free! for taking. Help yourself. They are located in the Communications Room just to the left in the main lobby. Otherwise they get thrown out, which likely will happen this Saturday morning.

Thanks,
John Chittley

 Movie Night Report

Last Saturday's Movie Night for the junior sailors was a very well received and attended event, with close to 30 children and twice as many parents filling the clubhouse to watch WALL' E. There was a special dinner for the kids and authentic movie popcorn for the main event. The parents mingled while the children watched the movie and, judging by the conversations during the evening, it was a hit!

A special thanks goes to Ryan Lippert who provided the popcorn machine and set up all of the audio and visual equipment.

Best Regards,
Alan & Karen

Cruising Season Kick Off - April 8, 2016
Ahoy ABYC Cruisers

Hey, don't let the April snow get you down. Sailing Season is right around the corner and the Kick Off to the 2016 Cruising Season is this Friday, April 8.

Don't miss the 'BOAT' or should be we say 'CRUISE' by not being there. We will be announcing the 2016 program as well as the new registration process so that you can book your cruises and check your status online!

This is always a fun and casual evening that brings new members, cruising virgins, and the 'seasoned cruisers' together to share past experiences and celebrate the upcoming cruising season.  Got kids? Great, bring them too. We have a kids table and menu!

We look forward to seeing you there!

Where? ABYC Clubhouse. When? This Friday - presentation starts at 7PM.
