Easter Parade from the Other Side

This is just a note to say how hard the Parade team worked getting everything set up for the float.

ABYC showed its true colours.
And it's the same team in costume below!

  Easter Parade

ABYC and the Beaches Lions Club Easter Parade

The parade was fabulous. It was a great day and the weather cooperated. It was the 50th year for the parade and the 34th year that ABYC has participated. There is a famous saying out there that, "It takes a Village to raise a Child". After having gone through a review of the preparation and delivery of ABYC's entry into this year's parade, I have decided "It takes a Village to successfully be in the Easter Parade" The ABYC Tribe should be very proud of our accomplishment!

I would like to personally thank all the people who in some way helped pull this event together. We'll start with Commodore Bob Hedley, Paul Brennan, Mike MacDonald, Paul McDonald, Bill Surgenor, and Geoff Huck. Thanks also to Celia Lum, Howard Franklin, Bruce Carr, Chef Jan, Katie, Victoria, Simon Cooper, Margaret Cooper, Linda Gouge, Bernie Caron, Ed Wilson, Ken McAlpine, Susan Hogan, Nancy Wilson, and Mary Jacobs.

The biggest Thank You goes to all who are actively involved the day of the Parade. It does take up the whole day but I feel the smiles on the children's faces make it all worthwhile.

So a Big Thanks goes to:

The unofficial kick off to the spring season was this past weekend with the Annual Easter Brunch. A very big Thank You to Katie, Jan, and the rest of the food and beverage crew for putting on an outstanding buffet brunch for the members. Also, thanks to Karen and Alan for doing the kids Easter Egg Hunt. A good time was had by all. One point that I hate to bring up but have to for future buffets; the advertised price was $23.00 including tax and gratuity. It should have been $23.00 plus tax and grat.

The month of April is always a bit busy around the club. We have Kids Movie Night, Cruising Kick Off night, New Members Night, Spring Fling, and a host of other special nights. One thing we will be able to do this year is hear what the speakers have to say. Our new sound system has been installed. This is a project I have wanted to do for the past two years and am glad that it is finally complete. The next project is the upgrade of the WIFI system for the clubhouse and docks. This is due to be done during the month of April. Now, I have to tell you that I am not a "techy" person. I have to rely on people who know mega-bites more than I do on this subject. Although this is an upgrade for more reliable service, streaming is not something that we will be able to do.

That's all I've got for this week - see ya at the club!

2016 ABYC OPEN CHALLENGE REGATTA

You Up for a CHALLENGE! ?

Hello All,

My name is Martin Gibb and I have the privilege of being asked to CHAIR ABYC's annual LORC racing regatta May 28-29. It's a big honour. Roger Van Vlack has helmed an impressive list of successful regattas for ABYC over quite a few years, continuing our club's reputation for staging the best run and most professional regattas on the lake. Big shoes to fill. Thanks Roger.

Building on his successful formula, we have a new team, a new event format, and even a new name. AND a very short time to get it all done. The 2016 ABYC OPEN CHALLENGE! REGATTA is open for business - and we need your help immediately, if not sooner. Fleet invitations and sponsorships are the keys to this party. If each club racing member can make a couple of calls to their racing friends in other clubs to register, and do it early, well, we just might be able to really make some noise this year.

This is our club, regatta, and party We're hosting our extended racing community on Lake Ontario for the first big LORC race weekend. We are asking all members who race weeknights to get involved in our club's premier annual race regatta, showcase our club racing prowess to all comers, and enjoy a fantastic race weekend to launch our summer. It's that simple and it's also a CHALLENGE!

This year, the 2016 ABYC OPEN CHALLENGE! REGATTA format also features a new prize fund (a $4000 value!), and an overall emphasis on regenerating those 1500 plus PHRF boats out there. To that end, we are participating in a new Inter-Club Team PHRF CHALLENGE!, introduced via the new PHRF Racers Association. Perhaps you've heard if there might be something "on the line" with other clubs.

Don't get IRC'ed folks, the 2016 ABYC OPEN CHALLENGE! REGATTA is a big racing tent with multiple courses and an off-shore race. We would like all One-Design fleets and all IRC competitors at the party. By the way, this includes you NFS (Non-Flying Sailors) too! That's right. We said it. One-Design, IRC, PHRF, FS, NFS, 'multiple fleets', course racing and off-shore both, one and two day separate registration with separate flags and prizing. Your choice. Have I mentioned EARLY REGISTRATION INCENTIVES? Details on ABYC Website.

Finally, and a few more times in the next two months, your faithful ABYC Regatta team will be inquiring, asking, maybe doing a little cajoling of our club's racing members to come race in our club regatta this year. And bring your friends. Consider this a personal CHALLENGE!, from my team to yours.

Extra-finally, Roger didn't pull off all these successful regatta stunts by himself. I heard ABYC has possibly the most experienced, professional, and dedicated Race Management Team on Lake Ontario! I really did hear that somewhere. Come see what that's all about and let's have some fun in May!

Please contact me about event sponsorship. REGISTER NOW! See you in May @ ABYC.

Sponsorship and Donations
We'd like to give a huge thanks to our first two corporate sponsors:
Skippers' Plan (Drew Robertson), and StayBillety (Barbara Jones).

Sponsors and donations help make this an affordable event and a fun event for all participants, and we continue to seek both (private donations get a tax receipt). If you'd like to inquire about either, please reach out to me and I'll get you through the process as easily as possible.

Key Volunteers Needed
While the core team is almost complete, we are still looking for a few people:
Fundraising/Sponsorship Chair:  We have a sponsorship information package complete, and now we need someone to coordinate the efforts of those communicating with potential sponsors, formalize agreements, and host sponsors on-site. Works with our Regatta Chair and our Contracts Advisor.

Grounds Chair: With ~150 boats to park, scores of trailers, 100+ cars, a big tent, and some limited camping, we need to organize a layout, mark off space, and adjust during the event if necessary. It will involve close liaison with our Regatta Chair, the ABYC Yard Chair, Club Manager, and bosuns.

Measurement Chair:  Confirm the requirements, set up the equipment, and lead the team of volunteers and assembly line that will be running each of the 150+ boats through some simple equipment measurements and safety gear checklists.

Regatta Secretary:  Manage regatta office and keep track of all the registrations, permission forms, payment issues, notices, etc., before and during the event.  Works with Regatta Chair, Finance Chair, and Principal Race Officer.

Contracts Adviser:  Ensure that contracts (primarily sponsorship agreements) for the event are compliant with club guidelines and are fair and complete to both parties.  Some legal background would be ideal.  Works with the Fundraising/Sponsorship and Regatta Chairs.

Please reach out to me if you're interested in any of these roles and I'll set up a meeting with our Regatta Chair, Laura Goddard.

Additional Volunteers
Once we've filled all the key positions, we'll post a list of all the other help we need, including race committee, ramp help, measurement helpers, and snackticians. Look for a notice in early April.

This is going to be an amazing event, and I hope that everyone will get a chance to experience the energy and fun we're going to have!

2016 LORC Racing Season

Looking Ahead to the 2016 LORC Racing Season

The start of the 2016 racing season is still a couple of months away but, for many, planning which events to enter and the associated crew organizing activities, are underway. If you want to race 'inter-club' events this year, then a key series you should be considering is the Lake Ontario Racing Council's (LORC) schedule for 2016. The LORC events are scheduled through the summer, starting with our own regatta here at ABYC on May 28 and 29.

The racing offered throughout the LORC season is open to both one design classes and to handicapped fleets (specifically IRC and PHRF). Racing is offered at most of the events for two days (Saturday and Sunday) however competitors are welcome to register for only one day of racing if desired. Awards and flags are normally presented at the end of each day so, even though you registered for racing on say a Saturday, you still could be going home with a flag in addition to bragging rights.

If you choose to race multiple events, you may qualify for the various season championships awarded by LORC. By reading the sailing instructions on the LORC site (see link below), the qualifying participation levels can be seen. A season championship is certainly something to which you can aspire however commitment is needed.

Registration is now open and the cost this year for most events is $60 for one day or $110 for two days. Discounts are available if you register for the season. As a reminder, late entry charges apply if you register on the Wednesday or after of the week leading up to any particular event. Sign-up for the LORC Newsletter to learn more.

Cruising Season Kick Off - April 8, 2016
Ahoy ABYC Cruisers

As the Non-Winter of 2016 turns into Spring, you can feel that Sailing Season is right around the corner.

After a banner 2015 Cruising season, you may wonder: How much better can it get?

For 2016, your Cruising Committee is shooting for 'Epic' so, if you would like to find out more, we invite you to the 2016 Cruising Season Kick Off Meeting at 7pm on Friday, April 8:
  • If you plan to eat at the club, please make a reservation so that the Food Services folks can be better prepared. As we are expecting a large group, a fine dining menu will not be offered. Chef Jan will be preparing a menu specific for this evening (no buffet). For members arriving later, there will be an opportunity to eat after the presentation.
  • Unless otherwise requested, small parties will be seated together at large tables to encourage dialogue and camaraderie. We do not want anyone sitting alone unless that is their choice.
  • Extra tables will be set for those who wish to attend only the presentation.
  • Have children? There will be members attending with children so this is a great opportunity for 'families' to meet.
Welcome to another Cruising Season at ABYC. We hope to see you on the 8th!

Family Movie Night
Saturday, April 2 at 5 PM

We are hosting our first family movie night! The plan is for the kids and parents to get to know each other and promote more family participation in our club events.

Please note:
  • We will provide food and drinks for the kids, and of course popcorn!
  • Parents can fend for themselves as the bar and restaurant will be open.
  • The movie is about 90 minutes long so I would estimate conclusion at 7:45 pm.
  • The movie will be shown at the carpeted area by the pool table so bring a blanket/pillow/anything your kids like to lounge on.
  • Movie will be WALL`E.

Special image of WALL'E sailing to ABYC!

So bring your kids (friends welcome), grandchildren, etc., and let's have a fun evening!

Please email us at alancoulter@rogers.com if you plan to attend and please include the number of kids. We need an estimate of numbers for Jan our chef to prepare the food. It should be a fun evening.
