Well, hopefully the warm weather we had this weekend is a sign of the spring to come. I remember that last year was a disaster for boat prep and club prep due to cold, rainy weather right up to launch. Let's cross our fingers.

I would like to thank Joanne and Steve who keep publishing a great newsletter week after week. Our previous editors, Patty and Bernie, not only had the sailing bug but they were also shutter bugs and spent many hours taking shots around the club during the year as well at many of the club functions and parties. A product of this was some really nice pictures of the club and activities around the club were published in S2S. If any of you have some shots that you would like to share and have published, you can email them to s2seditors@gmail.com and they may show up in a future edition. You of course will be credited and, if you would like to add a caption, even better. For club activities, if anyone would like to be the "official photographer" for the event, please let myself or the member coordinating the event know and we can arrange for the pictures to be published in either S2S or the club website. Great way to get some work hours!

For the month of April, we had a bit of a scheduling mix up for some of the club activities. The schedule for April 2 is the Kids Movie Night, April 9 is the all day work party and April 16 is the Annual Spring Fling. Thank you Karen, Alan, and Ryan for taking on a movie night for our most junior of members. It's a great opportunity for all the kids to get together and hopefully build some friendships that will last for years to come. I have heard a rumour that Spring Fling may have a bit of a Las Vegas feel to it this year..... stay tuned!

During the two budget meetings that we had in January, we tested two different sound systems. All members present were very happy that all areas of the room were covered and they could hear clearly. Late this month we will be installing a permanent system that can be turned on with a flip of a switch. Sound levels can be zoned and there will be one in the sailors' lounge. We will repurpose some of the old system to be used for outside functions and in the gazebo.

It's that time of year when I usually bring up minimum billing and how it works. It is billed at the beginning of the period so a credit can be set up for you at the bar. You draw down on it during the period, and when it is depleted the rest of your purchases are charged to your credit card or billed to you, whatever arrangement you have with the office. The confusion is if you want to leave a tip and you still have minimum billing available and you can't give a tip. The amount billed for minimum is for food and beverage revenue only. Using up the minimum for tipping defeats the purpose of the program. At present the only way to tip when using minimum is by cash or the staff can bill it to your credit card in the office. I realize this is not the most perfect system in the world but we are stuck with it for the time being. Thank you for working with it.

Speaking of bar tabs, we are working our way to be as cashless as possible for many different reasons. To this end, we will start asking for membership cards to open a tab for the day starting in the near future. I ask that you start carrying your membership card with you, more on this in the coming weeks.

That's all I've got for this week - see ya at the club!

Easter Parade Leader Needed

This is my last year doing the Easter Parade and if anyone wants to step up and take over, I can mentor them through the process.

If interested individuals want to come along on the 27th, I can show them what is involved. You can reach me at 416-520-6247 or email John Chittley.

Missing Plywood Dinghy

Hi Folks!

I am writing to solve a mystery surrounding the disappearance of my dinghy from the yard sometime between mid-December and mid-January of this year. This is a blue plywood epoxy dinghy that was stored in its cradle marked 1598 at the north end of the cradle railway yard. Because it needed work to refurbish its transom, I wanted to remove it in January to do that work but someone beat me to the punch!

It is a 10' sailing and rowing dinghy built according to plans I got online in 2002. I still have the spars, daggerboard, and rudder. So, just in case someone thought it would be a great fixer upper project and that it was abandoned, sorry, it's mine. It simply rested in the yard so long because I was refurbishing my big boat for a number of years as some of you know.

If you know of its whereabouts, drop by the club or give me a call.  If I don't hear soon, I'll have to report it to Toronto's finest as I put about 200+ hours into building it and was looking forward to using it this season.

Cheers!

Family Movie Night

Saturday April 2 at 5pm

We are hosting our first family movie night. The plan is for the kids and parents to get to know each other and promote more family participation in our club events.

Please note:
  • We will provide food and drinks for the kids, and of course popcorn!
  • Parents can fend for themselves as the bar and restaurant will be open .
  • The movie is about 90 minutes long so I would estimate conclusion at 7:45 pm.
  • The movie will be shown at the carpeted area by the pool table so bring a blanket/pillow/anything your kids like to lounge on.
  • The movie title will be announced next week.

So bring your kids, (friends welcome), grandchildren, etc and let's have a fun evening !

Please email us at alancoulter@rogers.com if you plan to attend and please include the number of kids. We need an estimate of numbers for Jan our chef to prepare the food. It should be a fun evening.

46 more sleeps to launch!

Does anyone have the button from the 'second' regatta? If someone has one to donate to complete my set, they can email me.  AB's had a member, Keith Robson, who used to make these buttons.

Toonie Thursday Report

All Programs Begin at 7:00 PM Promptly

Last Thursday, Ron Bianchi performed to a standing room only crowd at ABYC. I say performed because he entertained us with humour while he educated us about the WHAT- WHY- WHEN and WHERE of weather. While his very educational two hour presentation concentrated on an overview of weather patterns and cloud formations, it also focused on local weather patterns and the influence of local land masses like the Scarborough Bluffs.

While we got to view many cloud formations and what they all meant, the one that fascinated me the most was Mick Jagger's Lips.

Yes, the cloud formation does look like Mick's Lips and, if you see it, you should head for cover as quickly as possible.

All in all, it was a very educational evening. Ron has graciously provided us with two PDF's, which will go into the Members Only section of the club's website. One is the slides from Ron's presentation; ABYC Sailing the Weather. The other is his Highly Recommended Resources.

The Toonie Thursdays Collection netted $181.95 for the Junior Racing Program.

Our next Toonie Thursday presentation will be on Thursday, April 14 at 7:00, with our own Diane Reid, giving us a first-hand look at her Clipper Round The world Yacht Race experience.

Work Party Season

We are on!

This weekend we will need people (at least 8!) to come out and help backfill the trench along the white wall. We will likely need help with this every Saturday from now until launch.

AND... keep in mind that the All Day Spring Work Party is scheduled for Saturday, April 9, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.  We will have lots of indoor and outdoor jobs to be done.  As part of last year's all day work party, we offered to attach tire lines to tires for members. We plan do the same again this year so think about whether or not you can use this service. All you need to do is drop your lines off in the club house on a Saturday morning and identify the dock numbers by attaching tags.

We will have jobs in the job jar for the all day work party soon. If you want to be a part of the seawall repair crew, look for Seawall Replacement in the job jar.
