ABYC Represented at 2016
MEXORC Regatta

A month ago our boat arrived from San Diego, Puerto Vallarta, and we were hoping to get it ready to race in the 2016 MEXORC Regatta.

This was a big accomplishment. With hard work and lots of time spent getting ready, we put our J105 on the start line. Our crew was assembled from sailors, friends in PV, San Diego and 4 MEMBERS OF ABYC!

For six days we raced in Class 3 as one of the smallest boats. We raced hard in strong winds. Had our share of boat trouble. And had to finish or begin each day fixing the boat as we went along. Broken Halyard, torn main, mast block blow outs, and out haul trouble, but we were all happy and grateful to be with each other. Once we got through the initial boat trouble, we started to get a feel for the boat and enjoyed some beautiful downwind sailing in 11 knots.

We were racing in Class 3 as one of the smallest boats among the Capri 37 fleet and two 44ft boats, some of those with masts 20 feet taller than ours. Our boat is a one design so we had to be assigned ORC rating. The rating that was given to us had a maximum timed owed to us of 1.50 min per hour raced compared to the 44ft boats.

I am so proud of our accomplishments. In less than 30 days we put the boat in the water, rigged it, and put a crew together that has never raced the boat before. We have learned to sail a new boat that we were completely unfamiliar with in record time.

It has been an amazing sailing experience. Each of our crew members came with their own strengths and expertise and we came together like a symphony and made the boat hum!!! HOW LUCKY ARE WE!
We placed 5th out of 12 in our class.

Easter Parade Help Needed

As I posted last week, the Beaches Easter Parade is coming up quickly on Sunday, March 27. We are in need of a volunteer to play the part of Tweety Bird. Sounds like fun and it is. In fact it is a blast! It is however also a long, tiring day. Anyone who is interested, please contact me and I can give you a run down as to what is required.

Also, if anyone wants to volunteer for this event, please let me know and I can tell you what is involved.
You can reach me at 416-520-6247 or email John Chittley.

2016 Canadian Optimist Championship Update

The Schedule
Thursday, August 18: Measurement & Registration
Friday, August 19:  Measurement, Registration, Practice Race, Opening Ceremonies
Saturday, August 20 - Tuesday, August 23:  Racing (NO club racing)
Wednesday, August 24:  Racing & Awards

We've been busy working on all the plans for this event, and the Notice of Race has been published! We are anticipating 150 or more Optimist Dinghies and young sailors, an equal number of parents, and another 30 or more coaches with coach boats, all spending a week at ABYC.  We've had early indicators of boats from Nova Scotia, Quebec, BC, the US, and Bermuda!

Sponsorship and Donations
We're engaging with sponsors, and private donations have started to come in. If you'd like to inquire about either, please reach out to me and I'll get you through the process as easily as possible.

Key Volunteers Needed
While the core team is almost complete, we are still looking for a few people:
Fundraising/Sponsorship Chair: We have a sponsorship information package complete, and now we need someone to coordinate the efforts of those communicating with potential sponsors, formalize agreements, and host sponsors on-site. Works with our Regatta Chair and our Contracts Adviser.

Grounds Chair: With ~150 boats to park, scores of trailers, 100+ cars, a big tent, and some limited camping, we need to organize a layout, mark off space, and adjust during the event if necessary. It will involve close liaison with our Regatta Chair, the ABYC Yard Chair, Club Manager, and bosuns.

Measurement Chair: Confirm the requirements, set up the equipment, and lead the team of volunteers and assembly line that will be running each of the 150+ boats through some simple equipment measurements and safety gear checklists.

Regatta Secretary: Manage regatta office, and keep track of all the registrations, permission forms, payment issues, notices, etc., before and during the event. Works with Regatta Chair, Finance Chair, and Principal Race Officer.

Contracts Adviser: Ensure that contracts (primarily sponsorship agreements) for the event are compliant with club guidelines and are fair and complete to both parties. Some legal background would be ideal. Works with the Fundraising/Sponsorship and Regatta Chairs.

Please reach out to me if you're interested in any of these roles and I'll set up a meeting with our Regatta Chair, Laura Goddard.

Additional Volunteers
Once we've filled all the key positions, we'll post a list of all the other help we need, including race committee, ramp help, measurement helpers, and snackticians. Look for a notice in early April.

This is going to be an amazing event, and I hope that everyone will get a chance to experience the energy and fun we're going to have!

Friday Night Surprise
Last week in S2S Terry Fagan ran an article saying ABYC member Dick Binsley would be singing for our pleasure at Friday Night Fine Dining. He also said that Dick would be singing a song written for ABYC. I wasn't sure who Dick was but, from the moment I came through the front door, I said wow this guy is good. Once I got upstairs I knew who Dick was - just didn't know his last name. It's often that way with so many new members over the past 10 years.

Like so many of our members, Dick has a talent that has to be heard to be appreciated. Dick gave us some excellent Down East music and some really fine Stan Rogers songs.

The highlight of the evening was his song for ABYC, "An Ode to Ron Mitchell". For those newer members who didn't know Ron, he is the bearded gentleman whose picture sits at the end of the bar. Dick has only been a member for four years but, after talking with many of Ron's friends, he wrote a captivating story in song that captured the spirit of the fabled life of Ron.

Haig DeRusha captured this on video and we hope the video will be placed on our website. Dick has agreed to sing his Ode to Ron at our Launch - Happy New Year's Celebration on Saturday, April 30. You will not want to miss this!

Work Party Season

Will There Be or Won't There Be?

Jobs for the sea wall repair this Saturday that is.... We are expecting that we will be able to start filling the space between the new seawall and the old seawall with gravel this upcoming Saturday but we can't confirm before press time. I believe that if you signed up for seawall repairs, you will be receiving an email to notify you about whether this job will start Saturday or not.  Oh the suspense!

I CAN however confirm that Saturday, April 9 is the date of the SPRING (yes SPRING!)  ALL DAY WORK PARTY, featuring plenty of jobs for all. I am feverishly, spring feverishly (sorry), putting together the list of jobs, and will be posting them in the job jar where you will be able to sign up!

The action all takes place one month from today on Saturday, April 9, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. To paraphrase Bruce Willis in Die Hard: Yippee-i-oh-ky-ay rubber duckers!

Don Jackson Memorial Fund
Work has started on Don's memorial and will be completed over the next few weeks. A box to collect donations for this is in the club office. Should there be any funds left after covering expenses (estimated at $300), it will be used to purchase refreshments for a dedication ceremony on a Sunday afternoon soon after launch.

Entertainment

Our Friend Meredith Cutting will return to ABYC on Friday March 11, 2016. Meredith will begin playing with a quiet set at 7:30, so that we can enjoy our dinner with a nice musical background. After dinner he will pick up the tempo and we can spend some time on the dance floor. And, of course, he will be joined by the ABYC Chorus who will assist him with The Train they call the City of New Orleans.

The Entertainment Committee hopes you will come out and join in the fun and fine dining at the best Yacht Club on Lake Ontario.

So come out and kick back for an evening with Meredith!
