Winter Stations Near the Club
If you are planning to visit the club for dinner in the next few weeks,
may we suggest a walk on the beach to explore the many new
Winter Stations before your lovely meal.

There are more than shown in the newsletter and well worth the visit.

Advance Notice - Ontario Sailing Seminars at ABYC

Racing requires two things; racers; and the race committee -- it sets the sailing instructions, the course, the start, the finish, and does the scoring. At ABYC, we have a strong history of great performance in both areas, with members who have achieved club, regional, national, and international levels as judges and race officers.

We are always looking to increase the number of experienced race officers and mark layers so that we can spread the workload for our club races, our regattas, and when we return the favour at other clubs and help them run regattas.

Level 1 for both race officer and mark layer is the assistant level, and is intended to get you comfortable with the objectives and routines on a committee or mark boat so that you can help get things done efficiently.

Level 2 is the race chair, or lead on a mark boat. These people take responsibility for getting the job done, and set the direction for the assistants.

You can take both level 1 and 2 courses at the same time, and once you have experience, get certified at each level in turn.

Help your club maintain the history of strong performance in race management; take some time to learn more, so you can help more.

Course 1 March 5 & 6: Level 1 and 2 Race Officer Course
Cost $75.71 per person.
Saturday, March 5, 2016 - 9:00am - 5:00pm
Sunday, March 6, 2016 - 9:00am - 4:00pm

Course 2 May 14 & 15: Level 1 & 2 Mark Layer Prerequisite Seminar
Cost $75.71 per person
Saturday, May 14, 2016 - 9:00am - 4:30pm
Sunday, May 15, 2016 - 9:00am - 4:30pm

ABYC will reimburse the cost for members who take one or both courses and then contribute 7 hours of Race Committee work in 2016.

The courses are open to members of any OSA club, not just ABYC.

Toonie Thursday -
Ron Bianchi

Weather Guru Ron Bianchi - March 10 - 7:00 PM

Ron Bianchi wears many hats. He is a meteorologist by profession and a sailor among his various hats. He is a genuine believer in mind-opening encounters with the science of meteorology and how to use it to your advantage. Ron is the official weather analyst for the Ontario 300.

Weather maps provide a simplified depiction of the current or predicted weather conditions. They can be based on satellite and radar images, recordings from instruments at weather stations, and computer analysis. This lecture covers the most common you will come across on the internet and how to read them properly, especially when they are applied to the marine environment.

The lecture will cover the basics of the weather map, the different types available, short term analysis and forecasting using the current weather map, simple and the most relevant Apps available to track weather systems.

Come out and be entertained while learning many new valuable tips about how to be more weather savvy on water and on land.

Work Party Season

Rest Up This Weekend!

We only have a few jobs this weekend, and not much help is needed. Our very fine bubbler-boy team (finest bubbler team on the lake if you ask me!) will be out as usual and some work is remaining to be done on the Fitz. There are no dock maintenance activities scheduled for Saturday. We are all waiting with great anticipation the arrival of the contractor who will commence work on the white wall.

Please read Roger Marsh's update in today's S2S to get an idea of the work that will need to take place over the following weeks up until launch. It is critical that we all work together to get the white wall in shape to support the spring launch. I believe we will start needing lots of volunteers starting March 5 if all goes well, and will confirm this in next week's S2S.

The best way to get the latest and greatest information is to go into the Job Jar and sign up for wall repair jobs. This will mean that you get notified via email when the work actually starts. This is particularly beneficial to those of you looking for weekday work as Roger will email all sign-upees as we need people to come out to lend a hand.

Woohoo! Lots of work coming up!! Work parties yay!

Seawall Repair Update

"So Sailorman, what's the Seawall Plan" ???

"Well, dig this crew, this is what we'll do. Listen up" ...

"But I thought we didn't have to do that this year. Dig, that is"???

"You're right, we don't. It took so long to dig 'Tie-Back' trenches and fill them in again last year that we changed the design so we could finish the work in three years rather than ten".

"That sounds good, but tell me what do I have to do"?

"Not much to begin with. All of our preparations are complete at the moment. The chosen contractor, Great Lakes Offshore Services, is arriving today (Monday) and will soon begin equipment and materials mobilization.
Barges will arrive by water, and steel supplies and machinery will arrive by truck and be organized into an efficient construction unit starting work some time this week. Next, the contractor will be erecting steel beam guides to keep the new wall tight to the existing wall as much as possible. That will take less than a week. He will then start driving the long steel wall sheets about 30 feet into the lake bed, deep enough and strong enough to be a free standing wall.  If all goes well, steel driving should be completed in about 11 days, from the corner of Blue & White Wall Northward to the edge of the Railway".

"Are we now ready for launch"?

"Not so fast crew person.  As soon as the contractor is past the junction of Green Dock, our Jobs begin.  We will need to:
1)      Fill the empty space between the old and new wall with small gravel and finally top with concrete. (Starts Saturday March 5)".

"Hmm! You mean by the 'Wheel Barrow'. That's a lot of gravel"?!!!

"You're right again but, with the boats so close on the hard, trucks can't get close and probably the boardwalk could not support the weight of a machine full of gravel, and that's not all:

2)      We will have to re-attach all of the Vdocks and Finger Docks along the new wall.
3)      Attach a steel cap to cover the gap.
4)      Re-install the 6 X 6 rub rail, cleats, and fender boards.
5)      Re-attach Red and Green dock frames and repair the decking.
6)      Re-install all electrical and water facilities along white wall.
7)      Clean up debris, repair any broken decking and landscape where necessary.
8)      Celebrate a job well done".

"Will we be finished by Launch"?

"Maybe. If not, it will all be safe and secure for Launch to take place.  But!, we must be finished soon after Launch as we have a big year of sailing ahead of us starting with the ABYC Regatta organization starting around May 22".

"I'm in but what can I do right now"?

"Sign up in the job jar for Seawall Repair and make sure your email address is correct and we will let you know what and when to do at the right time".

"Cool, I can do that right away".

Entertainment

Our Friend Meredith Cutting will return to ABYC on Friday March 11, 2016. Meredith will begin playing with a quiet set at 7:30, so that we can enjoy our dinner with a nice musical background. After dinner he will pick up the tempo and we can spend some time on the dance floor. And, of course, he will be joined by the ABYC Chorus who will assist him with The Train they call the City of New Orleans.

The Entertainment Committee hopes you will come out and join in the fun and fine dining at the best Yacht Club on Lake Ontario.

So come out and kick back for an evening with Meredith!
