Rounding Up Sailing Club Visits While in Australia

The Belmont Sail Club races dinghies and, like ABYC, has a strong youth program.

And then there's the Club house (bottom image), a TINY 50,000 sq ft club, with five restaurants, five bars, and a 400 seat auditorium for entertainment. Also like ABers, Australians like their sailing and their beer!

I am writing this article after getting home from the Super Bowl party held at the club. Good turn out and great food. The kitchen outdid themselves on this one. I did learn a lesson, don't ask the Chef to make the chilli a "bit hotter", got a feeling I am gonna regret that one! I hope that all of you that attended had a great time.

Since the departure of our club manager, all of our staff have been stepping up to the plate to carry on the business of the club. Roxanne and Lidia have been taking the brunt of this and I would like to thank them for keeping things rolling along as smoothly as possible. We have one more small change coming. Katie, our bar supervisor who has been on maternity for the last 10 months is returning this coming Wednesday. WELCOME BACK KATIE!  Victoria who had been looking after Katie's position is staying with us. Thank you Victoria for all your hard work keeping things rolling. The members appreciate it!

During our transition, I have been spending a lot more time with the staff dealing with the day to day issues that pop up in this type of operation. One issue that has come up is members giving advice or suggestions to the staff on how the operation is run. When we had a manager most of this would run through that person. Until we have a new manager, I would ask that if you have suggestions or opinions about how the operation is running that you bring it up with myself or Senior Vice Commodore Brian Meret.

This past week I went through the club's function book, which is the calendar of all events, regattas, and functions that we hold during the year. With all of the information that was supplied to me from various committees, I believe it is up to date. I will have all of them posted on the calendar of the club website in the next week or so. If you have a chance, please take a look at it and let me know if I have overlooked something. I would like to be able to have all dates confirmed by the end of the month.

That's all I got for this week, see ya at the club!

Advance Notice - Ontario Sailing Seminars at ABYC

Racing Requires Two Things

Racers and the Race Committee, which sets the sailing instructions, the course, the start, the finish, and does the scoring.

At ABYC, we have a strong history of great performance in both areas, with members who have achieved club, regional, national, and international levels as judges and race officers. We are always looking to increase the number of experienced race officers and mark layers so that we can spread the workload for our club races, our regattas, and when we return the favour at other clubs and help them run regattas.

Level 1 for both race officer and mark layer is the assistant level, and is intended to get you comfortable with the objectives and routines on a committee or mark boat so that you can help get things done efficiently.

Level 2 is the race chair, or lead, on a mark boat. These people take responsibility for getting the job done, and set the direction for the assistants.

You can take both Level 1 and 2 courses at the same time and, once you have experience, get certified at each level in turn.

Help your club maintain the history of strong performance in race management. Take some time to learn more so you can help more.

Course 1 March 5 & 6: Level 1 and 2 Race Officer Course
Cost $75.71 per person.

Course 2 May 14 & 15: Level 1 & 2 Mark Layer Prerequisite Seminar
Cost $75.71 per person

ABYC will reimburse the cost for members who take one or both courses, pass the test and then contribute 7 hours of Race Committee work in 2016.

Family Movie Night

We are trying to improve the Club experience for families with kids. We had an excellent  response to our request for family contact information. Many expressed strong support for the endeavour. The idea is to compile a data base so we can better communicate when there are events that are geared to kids and to encourage greater family participation in club cruises, and more.

We are planning a kids movie night later in the spring so parents and kids can meet, network, and exchange contact information, etc. We will do some food and the obligatory popcorn. Should be fun !

If you have children and would like to be contacted as events come along, please email the following

Parents' names, boat name, kids' names, ages & date of birth, email address and phone number.

Thanks and here's to seeing all those future little sailors messin' about in boats!

Seawall Repair

In two weeks' time if all the planets align in the heavens with the two moons that will appear, Seawall Repair will recommence for 2016. The contractor has been selected and the details approved and signed, and the T.R.C.A. (our landlord) permit is forthcoming. The steel sheeting for the new wall has been formed and stacked at the rolling mill for delivery and the budget has been passed by the membership.

The process to arrive at this point has been so much more complex this year as we have approved the need to hire an expert contractor to complete White Wall using a cantilever design rather than the previous methods employed. White Wall is approximately 400 feet or 142 metres long and has many access and excavation restrictions and must be completed in a continuous run before the fish hatching deadline of March 31. Our chosen contractor, Great Lakes Offshore Services Inc., will drive the steel sheeting from a floating barge arriving on or about February 15. Work will start from the junction of Blue and White Walls, and will continue to the railway. It will not include any other purpose other than wall repair.

Our tasks are to be ready and prepared for the arrival of equipment and materials before work commences and to finish the fill and cap of the wall and restore our club grounds for our enjoyment this summer. Our preparation started with work parties last November to remove all Vdocks, rub rails, and wall fastenings, and build temporary supports and bridges to both Red Dock and Green Dock. This work is almost finished but must be finished in the next two weeks. We also need to be ready to temporarily disconnect both dock bubbling supply systems as work progresses. Green Dock and Red Dock electrical and water services must be reconfigured or cut and reconnected while work is in progress. Once work starts, we will need daily volunteer assistance for these tasks.

Although the actual start date is still unclear, we must be ready in advance. The actual end date of construction may be before March 31
but there will be many weeks of finishing work (gravel and concrete fill) both through the week and especially Saturday work parties up to and beyond Launch.

You are invited to join us often.
