If you are interested in contributing to a research project about Invasive Species, please follow the link at Ontario Sailing.

From a letter by Krystal Smith of Ontario Sailing:

Dear Ontario Sailing colleagues,

I am a working on a research project "Understanding Attitudes Towards Invasive Species" for the University of Waterloo. We are conducting a short survey about the way people perceive nature, their place of belonging, and invasive species. The survey takes about 5-10 minutes to complete. We are seeking adults living in Ontario who may know what an invasive species may be. Currently, we are seeking athletes such as sailors who may spend some time outdoors.

The link to the survey in the link above.

Rules De-Mystified

I would like to start by thanking Wendy Loat for her presentation of the rules de-mystified. We had a great turnout of 75 plus people which turned out to be an incredible night!

I would also like to thank Brian Chapman from UK Sails Toronto who provided us with protest flags to hand out along with two free online courses.

I would also like to thank Petra Fisher from Skippers Plan who supplied two rules books for a draw prize, and Bart Smit who came up with this idea and worked hard on making this night a success.

New Associate Membership Fee 2016

The Associate Membership Fee has been a struggle for our club for many years. We have had those that have paid and we have those who do not. It is really up to the Skipper of the boat, with the same crew week after week who come down and enjoy ABYC and all it has to offer, to be responsible by having their crew join the club!

For 2016, we are giving back to the Associates; the Associate pays $350 plus HST for the season and received TWO BAR CREDITS!!! The first credit will be $50 and is to be used between May 1 and August 31, and the second $50 credit is to be used from September 1 to December 31. There is no carry over from August to September.

I hope that this initiative helps us grow our Associate Membership this year and makes it fair to all of those who want to play.

Work Party Season

One month of winter is down and two more to go!

February is heart month. You may be thinking thrillingly that, yes, we have Valentine's Day this month and other lovey, mushy thoughts like that. Meh, I guess that's ok, but really heart month means heart health month, and that can only mean one thing - outdoor work parties!

See what I did there? Yep, tied Valentine's Day to work parties (not easy, but someone had to).
This Saturday morning, and the next few Saturday mornings, we continue to have several outdoor jobs on the go, so come on down and put your heart into it (....sorry).

Seawall Repair

In two weeks' time if all the planets align in the heavens with the two moons that will appear, Seawall Repair will recommence for 2016. The contractor has been selected and the details approved and signed, and the T.R.C.A. (our landlord) permit is forthcoming. The steel sheeting for the new wall has been formed and stacked at the rolling mill for delivery and the budget has been passed by the membership.

The process to arrive at this point has been so much more complex this year as we have approved the need to hire an expert contractor to complete White Wall using a cantilever design rather than the previous methods employed. White Wall is approximately 400 feet or 142 metres long and has many access and excavation restrictions and must be completed in a continuous run before the fish hatching deadline of March 31. Our chosen contractor, Great Lakes Offshore Services Inc., will drive the steel sheeting from a floating barge arriving on or about February 15. Work will start from the junction of Blue and White Walls, and will continue to the railway. It will not include any other purpose other than wall repair.

Our tasks are to be ready and prepared for the arrival of equipment and materials before work commences and to finish the fill and cap of the wall and restore our club grounds for our enjoyment this summer. Our preparation started with work parties last November to remove all Vdocks, rub rails, and wall fastenings, and build temporary supports and bridges to both Red Dock and Green Dock. This work is almost finished but must be finished in the next two weeks. We also need to be ready to temporarily disconnect both dock bubbling supply systems as work progresses. Green Dock and Red Dock electrical and water services must be reconfigured or cut and reconnected while work is in progress. Once work starts, we will need daily volunteer assistance for these tasks.

Although the actual start date is still unclear, we must be ready in advance. The actual end date of construction may be before March 31
but there will be many weeks of finishing work (gravel and concrete fill) both through the week and especially Saturday work parties up to and beyond Launch.

You are invited to join us often.

ABYC Adult Learn-to-Sail Program

There are Learn-to-Sail Programs available all year round!

The ABYC Learn-to-Sail Open House is a great opportunity to learn about on-the-water programs. Please refer your friends. You can find the registration form and class schedule for the the Adult Keelboat Program (Basic Cruising certification) at abyc.on.ca and click on Sailing School.

If you are already a seasoned sailor, or perhaps you've just moved up to a bigger boat, and wish to get Intermediate Cruising Certification, register for one of our intermediate courses.

Want to learn to race, or improve your racing skills? Try this.

Or if you need something sooner, join Brian Chapman, UK Halsey, for a free sail trim seminar on Thursday, April 7, 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Entertainment

Family Movie Night

We are trying to improve the Club experience for families with kids. We had an excellent  response to our request for family contact information. Many expressed strong support for the endeavour. The idea is to compile a data base so we can better communicate when there are events that are geared to kids and to encourage greater family participation in club cruises, and more.

We are planning a kids movie night later in the spring so parents and kids can meet, network, and exchange contact information, etc. We will do some food and the obligatory popcorn. Should be fun !

If you have children and would like to be contacted as events come along, please email the following

Parents' names, boat name, kids' names, ages & date of birth, email address and phone number.

Thanks and here's to seeing all those future little sailors messin' about in boats!
