Congratulations to everyone who attended and contributed to the dialogue at last evening's General Meeting. While I thanked my fellow board members, I wasn't able to thank the 140 members in attendance. We had the youngest (5 months old) to the oldest present. Wow, isn't that terrific?

Those present were attentive, given we had board reports which are tough to complete in less than 1.5 hours. Perhaps that's because we have so much activity, accomplishments to celebrate, and plans for 2016 on the go! We received some excellent questions and commentary that came from the heart as well as the mind. There were many changes, with fine tuning to fees that will help us attract new members in all categories and grow our programs (sailing schools, racing, cruising, and social). We passed Associate/Dinghy Life Membership and took another step forward to understanding Travel Lift flexible launch and haulout.

The Board members continue to call out for you to find your place to make a contribution. Erik, Saturday work parties. Bob, dock revitalization and vision planning. Mike, marcomm, social and house committees. Jeff/Paul, Opti Regatta this summer and race management. Rick, board elections. You can search opportunities on Job Jar or by speaking to Sue Hamilton (Work Parties) or the Committee Chair.

I was most appreciative of the attentiveness. Despite a large room filled for nearly three hours, it was clear that everyone was listening, seeking to understand, and offering constructive ideas and feedback.  Now it will be up to the Board, Committee Chairs, and participating members to act.

Well done everyone!

ABYC Wins Two Sailing Awards!

ABYC Wins Ontario Single handed Championship
Race Team Member Clara Gravely Named Ontario Female Junior Sailor of the Year

On Sunday, January 17, the Ontario Sailing Annual General Meeting was held at the Toronto Boat Show venue.  ABYC was presented with two Ontario Sailing Awards.

Clara Gravely, one of the ABYC Race Team's Laser Radial sailors, won the Female Junior Sailor of the Year Award, based on her strong performance over the 2015 season.

Clara has also been named a member of the Ontario Sailing Team (OST), and will be training with OST in a series of winter training sessions in Florida.

Congrats to Clara for her success in the 2015 season, and good luck in 2016.

ABYC also won the Ontario Grand Prix Single Handed Development Series, a championship trophy that is awarded to the club with the best scores in single handed racing, comprising both Optimist and Laser Radial fleets.

Thirteen ABYC Optimist sailors and six Laser Radial sailors competed in the series, with
Martin Staadecker placing 3rd overall amongst 89 Optimists,
and Ian Doell placing 2nd overall amongst 78 Laser Radials.

Congrats to all ABYC Race Team members on their 2015 results.

Celtic Night Again a Huge Success

Celtic Night last Saturday was once again a smashing success. This has come to be ABYC's premier entertainment event in recent years.

The evening began with a Whisky Tasting with 23 participants. Each participant paid $30 to taste five unique Single Malt Scotches. Technically, one of them was not a Scotch as it was distilled in Ontario and can only be called a Single Malt Whisky.

The Whisky Tasting was followed by a four course meal, which was enjoyed by a sellout crowd of 115. Prior to dining, everyone was entertained by a humorous Toast to the Hagias by Brian of Poor Angus. Following dinner, several other members arrived to hear Poor Angus swelling the numbers to 150+.

The music by Poor Angus was as expected excellent as they mixed slow with fast with a few jigs thrown in. The sign of a good evening is when people are still dancing at the end of the night. As Poor Angus finished their program at about midnight, the dance floor was filled with at least 50 people dancing.

A big thank you to everyone who worked on making this a successful evening!

Club Activities with Kids
Alan Coulter & Karen Kaiser

Remember those lazy days of summer as a kid just messin' around with your pals? Well, the Membership committee wants to help improve the club experience for families with kids.

Karen and I joined ABYC in 2003 and Ella and Tara, aka the twins, were born in 2004. They have grown up with the club like a second home and we participate regularly in the cruising program as well as the many winter activities.

As any parent knows, kids can get bored REALLY quickly and it's really important to have other kids around. We try informally to coordinate our cruising and other activities with the members we know that have children. That way we have happy kids and, just as important, happy Mums & Dads!

The Club membership records do not list the names and ages of members' children. The membership committee would like to ask any members with children to identify their names and ages. As summer cruises and the many other events (ie. family race, club picnic, bingo night, Christmas party, Halloween, etc.) take place, the organizers would be better able to reach out to the families with information so we can encourage a greater family participation.

If you are interested in a bit more information as events come along, please email the following to alancoulter@rogers.com:

Parents' names, boat name, kids' names, ages & date of birth, email address and phone number.

Thanks and here's to seeing all those future little sailors mess'in about in boats!
