Vice Commodore - Planning
Bob Brew

This Monday, January 25, the Assessment Review Board will hold the hearing on ABYC's Municipal Tax appeal beginning at 9:30 AM. We are appealing our MPAC Assessment as part of a formal group of GTA Yacht Clubs.

I previously notified our membership that this is a public hearing and anyone interested could attend. Please note however that the location has changed to:

Hearing Room 3, 8th Floor
425 Adelaide Street West, Toronto

This is a completely different location than previously published. I do plan to attend and will be able to report on the progress at Monday evening's General Meeting.

Club Activities with Kids
Alan Coulter & Karen Kaiser

Remember those lazy days of summer as a kid just mess'in around with your pals? Well, the Membership committee wants to help improve the club experience for families with kids.

Karen and I joined ABYC in 2003 and Ella and Tara, aka the twins, were born in 2004. They have grown up with the club like a second home and we participate regularly in the cruising program as well as the many winter activities.

As any parent knows, kids can get bored REALLY quickly and it's really important to have other kids around. We try informally to coordinate our cruising and other activities with the members we know that have children. That way we have happy kids and, just as important, happy Mums & Dads!

The Club membership records do not list the names and ages of members' children. The membership committee would like to ask any members with children to identify their names and ages. As summer cruises and the many other events (ie. family race, club picnic, bingo night, Christmas party, Halloween, etc.) take place, the organizers would be better able to reach out to the families with information so we can encourage a greater family participation.

If you are interested in a bit more information as events come along, please email the following to alancoulter@rogers.com:

Parents' names, boat name, kids' names, ages & date of birth, email address and phone number.

Thanks and here's to seeing all those future little sailors mess'in about in boats!

Work Management Committee

Work Management Committee Needs a Few More Members

The work management committee helps keep the Job Jar database up to date. We help members record their hours and we help the job supervisors keep track of their jobs in the software. In 2016, we will be conducting audits of the database entries and need a few more members to help with the work.

This work is good for someone who:
  • Is very comfortable working with computers
  • Enjoys teaching and helping people
  • Has the patience of a saint (just kidding...kind of)

Most of the work can be done from home but there are occasional meetings at the club. Please send me a message at michelle@chefdemaison.ca.

Toonie Thursday - January 14 2016

An Evening with Gordon Laco

Last Thursday evening some 75 members and guests turned out for Toonie Thursday to hear a presentation by Gordon Laco, well known Marine Historian and consultant to the Movie Industry. And we weren't disappointed!

Gord warmed us with tales of his consulting to the movie industry for many years. The highlight of his consultancy was Master and Commander with Russell Crowe. In more recent years, he has been consulting for the Pirates of the Caribbean series with Johnny Depp.

Gord also told us about his mid-life decision to join the Navy when he learned that you could join the Canadian Navy up to age 50. After a very rigorous training program, Gord was Commissioned and showed us a picture of him in uniform with his two gold stripes on his sleeves.

After warming us up, Gord got into the heart of his presentation; a blow-by-blow description of work he has done on several tall ship replicas. Two of the ships he talked about were Lynx and Niagara which both participated in the Toronto Tall Ships Festival a few years back. One of the interesting things we learned was that some of these tall ship classics are very fast, with speeds running 8 to as high as 15 knots.

Gord did have one sad slide; a photo of The Bounty as she was sinking during a hurricane about three years ago. The Captain who perished along with one crew member was a guest at ABYC a few years ago when Tall Ships America held their annual meeting at ABYC prior to The Tall ships Festival.

Gord sits on the Board of Tall Ships America.

We want to thank everyone who donated to Toonie Thursday as we raised $185.50 for the Junior Sailing Program. We also raffled of two pairs of tickets for The Toronto Boat Show that were donated by Skippers Plan and a single ticket that was donated by Goran Bulut.

A special thank you to Murray Gainer who stepped in as chief slide changer when the remote for changing the slides didn't work for Gord.

All in all a very enjoyable evening.

Thank you Gord!

Learn the Rules of Racing

Just a reminder this Thursday night - please come and join us as detailed below. We will also be taking time to talk about the laser co-op program - Keel boat program - Keel boat co-op - Paddle board program - Associate (Crew) members.

On behalf of the membership committee, we would like to invite you to a "Learn the Rules of Racing" event hosted by Wendy Loat, Sail Canada National Judge. Don't expect a hard core rules night. This will be a fun evening, a good chance to meet skippers from ABYC. There is no charge for this event.

The Racing Rules De-Mystified for New Racers

Whether you want to make the next America's Cup Team or just want to get the best performance out of your boat so you can be first in the cruising buffet line, Club Racing is the perfect way to get started on achieving your goals. Many sailors fear sailing onto the race course because their eyes glazed over by page 2 while reading the Racing Rules of Sailing.

Wendy Loat will present the rules you really need to know in a fun and understandable way so you can begin your quest to becoming a better sailor. We'll cover the basics and what to do when (if) you run into trouble, and how to get out of it (including what to do if you protest another boat or get protested). Learn how to have fun racing on Tuesday and Thursday nights, or take your family out for one of our bell buoy races on a weekend without fear of running afoul of other boats. Besides, ABYC has many prizes and trophies to be won, so soon you'll be bragging about your conquests to your co-workers.

Thursday, January 21 at 7 pm

Bring a rule book if you have one.

Cruising

Winter Cruise to Niagara Falls
Cancelled

Thank You, Paul

In October, at the Cruising Awards Night, Paul Lefneski announced that we would be trying something different this year with a winter land cruise by bus to Niagara Falls. His announcement was met with great enthusiasm. Paul put in a lot of time arranging for the hotel, the bus, the casino, and a proposed winery tour. As a result of his efforts, 36 people signed up for this weekend of fun with fellow club members.

Unfortunately, after Paul had all of the arrangements in place, several of those who had signed up found it necessary to cancel. At this point, Paul realized that the adventure was no longer economically viable and he had to cancel the trip this past week.

On behalf of those of us who are very disappointed that the trip had to be cancelled, I want to thank Paul for all of his time and efforts and many phone calls.

And Paul, make sure you get all those hours into the Job Jar. You have earned them!

Jim Allen
