The Toronto Boat Show was worth the trip, even though we did not get to see Twiggy.

If you're thinking of heading out, it's still on until January 17.

New Year Update

As I write this article, the temperature outside is -10 and wind-chill makes it -15. Makes me hope that all the winterizing work on the boat is doing what it's supposed to do and I will have no surprises come spring! As well the Boat Show has started which I recognize as the beginning of the sailing season. It's only three and a half months to launch!

As most of you know by now, our long serving manager, Rennie, has left our employ to persue other interests. I wish Rennie the best and will miss his dedication to our club. One of the club manager's responsibilities is the direction of our staff, Food and Beverage being the largest and year round departments. While we are in search of a new general manger, I do not anticipate that you will see any difference in the service that you receive in our food and beverage operation. I do ask that if you have any issues with service that you receive, please direct any comments to myself and not to any of the staff. I can be reached by email at my club email [email protected].

This coming Sunday, we will be having our annual Members Arts and Crafts exposition. This is the third year for this event; I have always been "blown away" by the artistic talents of our members. Tapestries, quilting, and pottery are only a few of the talents of some of our members. It is definitely worth a trip to the club, check the boat, and see some of the talents of your fellow members.

That's all I got for this week, see ya at the club!

Happy New Year everyone and hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. I, for one, am excited to be entering that 2nd most wonderful time of the year, ABYC budget season. The Board, its committees, and ABYC staff have been busy preparing a 2016 proposed fee structure and budget for operations and capital for the upcoming year. Next Monday, January 18, is our pre-budget meeting when we will review the budget in detail and you will get the chance to ask questions and provide your feedback. I do hope you take the time to come out and contribute to this process. We will also review in some depth the travel lift proposal, and the proposed 10-year capital financing plan, and once again your input into these proposals will be invaluable.

This year we plan to post a copy of our proposed budget to the members' section of the ABYC website by this Saturday so that you can review the numbers in advance and prepare your questions and feedback.

Of course, the AGM is on the following Monday, January 25, and we do encourage you to get out to this meeting when the Board will be formally asking for member support on many of the things we will be discussing at the pre-budget meeting. If you can't make this meeting in person, please send your proxy with someone who will be attending.

I'm looking forward to spending the next couple of Monday evenings with you.

Gordon Laco - Marine Historian

Tomorrow night we are privileged to have world renowned Marine Historian Gordon Laco as our speaker.

During his long and illustrious career, Laco has had the opportunity to work on many historical naval projects, as well as to be a naval consultant for many Hollywood films. One of his most notable films was Master and Commander, The Far Side of the World, where he was Head Technical Adviser and Historical Consultant.

Gord Laco has been in the marine business since his high school days when he worked part time in the old Marine Mail Order stores around Toronto... After graduating from university with a degree in History, he worked at the venerable Tom Taylor Company running their rigging department. In later years he became captain of the HMS BEE replica warship on Georgian Bay. He has a consulting practice dealing with the outfitting and operation of both classic sailing yachts and historic sailing ships all over North America. Laco has often become involved in advising and training as these vessels are returned to service following either new construction or comprehensive refits.

Laco will be doing a detailed sailor's description of the design, rigging and sailing performance of four significant sailing vessels he has been involved with professionally. These will be a mix of classic racing yachts, and historic replicas.

Laco is going to discuss the original configuration of the vessels when first built, their original service, and how they were either rebuilt recently or replicas were built. He will then talk about what it's like to sail them... What they're good at, what they're not so good at, what handling quirks they've got that are good and not so good, all the while expressing his fascination with traditional performance sailing.
All these vessels have character and strengths - all were built to provide the best performance that the technology and the understanding of design could afford them. All are exciting to sail.

As told by a sailor to sailors!

We hope you will join us tomorrow evening,

Jim Allen and Petra Fischer

Learn the Rules of Racing
Wendy
On behalf of the membership committee, we would like to invite you to a "Learn the Rules of Racing" event hosted by Wendy Loat, Sail Canada National Judge. Don't expect a hard core rules night. This will be a fun evening, a good chance to meet skippers from ABYC. There is no charge for this event.

The Racing Rules De-Mystified for New Racers

Whether you want to make the next America's Cup Team or just want to get the best performance out of your boat so you can be first in the cruising buffet line, Club Racing is the perfect way to get started on achieving your goals. Many sailors fear sailing onto the race course because their eyes glazed over by page 2 while reading the Racing Rules of Sailing.

Wendy Loat will present the rules you really need to know in a fun and understandable way so you can begin your quest to becoming a better sailor. We'll cover the basics and what to do when (if) you run into trouble, and how to get out of it (including what to do if you protest another boat or get protested). Learn how to have fun racing on Tuesday and Thursday nights, or take your family out for one of our bell buoy races on a weekend without fear of running afoul of other boats. Besides, ABYC has many prizes and trophies to be won, so soon you'll be bragging about your conquests to your co-workers.

Friendly Reminder - Ladders

Just a friendly reminder regarding unlocked or unclaimed ladders and boats left plugged in.

I walked the property on Saturday and noticed there are still quite a few ladders left unlocked, both at cradles and trailers as well as unclaimed ladders scattered throughout the property. This is how the thieves gain easy access to our boats; encouraging a crime of opportunity.

Also, please make sure that your boat is unplugged before you leave the property. I noticed at least four boats that were left plugged in on Saturday evening.

Thanks for your attention,

David Duckworth
