January Burst into Action

The Toronto Boat show kicks off this weekend so it's time to get setup for the new sailing season.
January 8 to 17, where Twiggy the water-skiing Squirrel will perform daily.

For the racing sailor, Key West Race week begins January 17.

The top image of the Whitsunday Island, boasted as one of the 10 best cruising grounds in the world, is the next destination for the clipper race. The fleet just past Sydney recently.

For a bit of virtual cruising, clubs like the Whitsunday Sailing Club offer a friendly harbour for all who visit.

Work Party Season

First Work Party of the Year

Happy New Year Everyone!

This weekend, Saturday January 9, marks the beginning of the 2016 Saturday morning work parties. The work parties start at 9:00 am and finish at around 12:00 pm.  And... while I can mention the major health benefits, the social networking aspect, not to mention the warm glow you get from making a positive contribution (I will leave all that fuzzy stuff to the plethora of New Year magazine articles telling you how to make a new and better you in 2016)...

No, the real bonus of coming out to work parties is the free coffee. Yes you heard that correctly - free coffee - and yes I did use the word plethora (I've resolved to use more impressive words in 2016).

SAIL TRIM SEMINAR with Brian Chapman of Sail Designer UK Sailmakers Toronto
Thursday April 7, 2016  7-9 pm

  • Coastal Navigation and Maritime Radio (Restricted Operators Certificate - ROC) Winter 2016 Call Roxanne to register! We have enlisted Diane Reid, ABYC's 'rock star' of sailing, to offer two courses this winter.
    See posters below for details.
    • The Coastal Nav course has limited enrollment, so act fast.

    • (IF YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR RADIO CERTIFICATE, YOU HAD BETTER GET ONE... IT'S THE LAW...)

  • The Face of Racing - Saturday, May 14, 2016  Diane will also be offering a 1-day introduction to racing for those who have already spent some time on the water. Students will be introduce to the fundamentals of racing: parts of the race course, the start line, sail evolutions and how they differ from what they already know, sail selection, and their role onboard.
  • Adult Keelboat (Basic Cruising) Program  We will be offering our full array of choices for the Adult Keelboat (Basic Cruising) program this summer. Instructors are in place, and Tricanna is being readied for the job! See the website for the schedule and registration form. If you don't need the course yourself, please refer your friends. Many of our students come from member referrals. Remember, the prime early spots fill fast!!!!
  • Intermediate Cruising Course  We will be offering two choices for the 5-day live aboard Intermediate Cruising Course - June 20-24 and July 25-29. Plus!! There will be an opportunity to take this course in British Columbia in late May or early June. (More on this later, but you can let us know if you would be interested.)

We have ideas for other seminars and courses, so stay tuned. Suggestions are always welcome. Learning about sailing is part of the ABYC mission. We are looking forward to it!
