Cruising Yacht Club of Australia

As summer is in full swing down under, clubs like CYCA have Racing and Cruising events to fill their season. Like Canadian clubs, this club offers a friendly welcome to all who visit. The burgee for CYCA hangs in ABYC obtained from a pirating raid years ago.

This drinking club also has a big sailing problem with their premier event; the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Some 600,000 spectators and 1000 spectator boats will line the harbour to watch the start of the race.

You can watch the start here.from the comfort of home. While the focus is on the big machines, many cruising boats compete and have won the race.

A Season's Change

What Goes Up Must Come Down

The un-decorating and removal of the Christmas tree and decorations brings to an end the official social season of 2015, and Don and I would like to send out a huge thank you to all of the hosts, hostesses, volunteers, and staff whose contributions throughout the year make ABYC's events and parties so enjoyable to run and attend.

See you in 2016!

It is with gratitude that I look back on 2015 and feel that much was accomplished during the tenures of the Board of Directors with which I have had the pleasure to be involved. The Board during that time worked tirelessly on your behalf and they are to be commended for their commitment to our Club. I ask that you continue to extend your support, your counsel, and your creative solutions to them.

I hope that you, as members, take advantage of all that ABYC offers. Seek out opportunities to be involved, strengthen your ties with your fellow members, make every effort to resolve issues with honour, make our new members feel welcomed, offer solutions, and continue to spread the good word about our Club around the Lake.

To my ABYC friends, and on behalf of Paula and me, I wish you a happy and fruitful New Year.

Dear Membership of ABYC,

I have been at ABYC for nine and a half years now and I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every minute but now is the time to move on to pursue my other interests in life.

I have worked with some truly remarkable board members who have been the driving force behind ABYC. Each are passionate about the club and they put in many hours of hard work to make the club successful. I hope that I have done my part to help them bring their vision to you, the membership.

I have enjoyed working with some great people on staff. I could go on and on but suffice to say that my staff have been brilliant.

The time has flown by but now I must focus on what lies ahead and wish all of you a wonderful 2016 with the prospect of bigger and better things ahead for ABYC.

Happy Holidays!

An Assessment Review Board will hold a hearing on ABYC's longstanding Municipal Tax Appeal on Monday, January 25, 2016 (postponed from November).  For those who are interested, it will take place at 655 Bay Street, 12th Floor, Room 12-1 at 9:30 AM in Toronto, and it is open to the public. Our case is part of a list of matters to be heard and three days (from the Monday) have been set aside for it. We are appealing our MPAC Assessment as part of a formal group of GTA Yacht Clubs and we have legal representation acting on our behalf.

Our Long Range Planning Committee made good progress this year in preparation for our next Club Vision Study. You can expect to see regular communication on this over the next several months. Earlier this year, I challenged you all to envision our club 10 years out and consider yourself, your participation, and expectations for ABYC in that future time. That is the required "prep work" for the upcoming survey. In the meantime, I continue to welcome any questions or comments you might have so please email vcplan@abyc.on.ca.

Believe it or not, the days are getting longer!  While there is still much of winter to come, there are lots of great activities around our Club to partake in. I look forward to seeing you there!

Best Wishes for a great 2016!

Looking back on 2015, ABYC has had a tremendous year, with well-run and attended racing, cruising, training programs, and social events. This is the direct result of the enthusiasm of our Membership, volunteer culture, and, of course, our staff.

In this issue of S2S, you will have read a note from Rennie Stobbs, who will be leaving ABYC on January 9, 2016. On behalf of the Board and Membership, I thank Rennie for his service to ABYC and wish him well going forward. Please take a moment to thank him personally at the Levee or with a quick call or note.

Two housekeeping issues relevant to this time of year:

Change of Membership Status
Under our By-Laws 6.14, should Members (other than Associate Members) wish to change their status, they must inform us by December 31 or they will be deemed to have indicated the intent to remain Members.

Work or Pay
As a self-help Club, we offer Members the option of contributing a minimum of 20 hours of their time per year, or alternately they are charged for them. The exception is for new Members who must contribute hours in the first two years of Membership.

At this time of year, it is customary to reach out to all members whose records show that they are below 20 hours. If you have contributed hours, please ensure that you log them in the Members section on our website. We've made and will continue to make enhancements to the Job Jar process for 2016, including a streamlined approval process and audits. Please see the Job Jar "Add Hours" Guide for instructions.

Finally, with 2016 just around the corner, best wishes for a safe, healthy, and happy New Year!

See you at the Levee,

The year has gone by quickly and we can look back at several major accomplishments undertaken by our members, including the completion of a 30 metre long stretch of new seawall against Coatsworth Cut, new water and sewer lines, demolition and removal of the old pile driver, preparation of the White Wall for installation of new sheet piling, and the rebuilding of the dinghy ramps, just to mention a few. With the exception of the new water and sewer lines, these projects, and many more, were carried out by volunteer members. I remain astonished and I feel very gratified by the effort our volunteers put into these projects. The cost savings accruing to the Club by having these projects completed by our own labour are considerable.

Looking forward, the new year will present plenty of new challenges with respect to repairs and maintenance. I'm particularly referring to the upcoming work with replacing our badly deteriorating seawalls. The piles for White Wall will be installed by a professional pile driving Contractor in February 2016. After pile installation is completed, I will again be appealing for support from member volunteers to help complete the work in time for spring launch.

Again, on behalf of the Board and myself, I would like to extend our deep gratitude to you all for your contributions and hard work throughout the year. And don't forget to enter your hours in the Job Jar by the deadline!

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year!
