Virtual Sailing for the Winter

During the "hard" season we like to catch some of the sailing action around the world. The warmer climates are a mecca for racing enthusiasts.

The Clipper Race has arrived in Sydney, next is the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race for them.

The Jules Verne Trophy boats, Spindrift and  Idec  have been sustaining over 30 knots for the their journey.

The Heineken Regatta in St Maarten recently completed, check out some of the action.

It's been an amazing year at ABYC. Once again our sailors have journeyed far abroad or raced successfully within the club programs or by representing ABYC while flying our colours at regattas abroad.  Whether you sail fast and furiously or nice and slowly on those sunny Sunday afternoons while listening to the Ball Game as I do, you always come back to be greeted by friends and staff who enjoy sharing time together with you.

We have lost a few fellow sailors and friends of the club this past year and we will miss them dearly.  I've also noticed a number of our members with budding sailors going along for their first sail. The future of sailing is in our hands.

I want to thank all of our dedicated staff who work tirelessly to make our meals, help stage parties as well as greet you and our guests at the dock whenever need be. Also, I want to thank my fellow board members and committee chairs who lead the operations and planning for the club. As I've heard from visitors to our club, fellow commodores, Sail Ontario and city officials, ABYC is well respected for its friendliness and leadership contributions especially during 2015, the year of Pan Am Sailing.

Thank you all and have a safe, happy holiday season.

Christmas Cheer

These three ABYC revelers were caught knocking on doors in the neighbourhood and we thought that everyone should be forewarned that they just might turn up at your door in their Christmas attire to wish you the best of the season too.

Since this is the Commodore in an Christmas sweater randomly matched in taste by another ABYC member with the exact same sweater, we thought that this would be cute and indicative of the activities of the season of interest to all. 74 club members were at our house yesterday for a Christmas cheer gathering.  Anyone can see the pics at this link.

Last Work Party of the Year

Wow, where does the time go?  This Saturday, December 19, is the last work party for 2015!  We have a few jobs to do:
  • Finish prep work for pile driving on the White Wall
  • Finish demolition of the old pile driving raft
  • Rebuilding the Sailing School ramps
  • Hauling steel old beam out of the Harbour at White Wall
  • General clean-up and removal of debris along White Wall
  • Clean up of Casa Ballman
Next work party is Saturday, January 9, 2016.  In the meantime, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

New Hand Rails on Front Deck

Prior to launch there was a request from some of our members to install handrails on our front deck leading to white wall. This was completed however the wood that was used cause slivers to several people's hands while holding on to the wooden rail.

Thanks to the design created by Mike Robertson and the build by Alfie Nonnewitz, they have installed two White Handrails and were able to have them Powder Coated White. I would like to thank the following members who found out through the grape vine and made a financial contribution toward this project:

  • Mike & Linda Robertson
  • Alfie Nonnewitz
  • Jim Allen/Rebecca Crumlish
  • Bill Logie
  • Bruce Hannah
  • Nancy Ogden/Harvey Harman
  • Roger Van Vlack
  • Gord Buchanan
  • Dave & Joan Gilbert

Part 2 will be having the chains powder coated
Thank you so much for making ABYC feel like ABYC

Gordon Laco - Marine Historian

On Thursday, January 14, 2016 we are privileged to have world renowned Marine Historian Gordon Laco as our speaker. Laco will be speaking at the Toronto Boat Show the following week.

During his long and illustrious career, Laco has had the opportunity to work on many historical naval projects, as well as to be a naval consultant for many Hollywood films. One of his most notable films was Master and Commander, The Far Side of the World, where he was Head Technical Adviser and Historical Consultant.
Gord Laco has been in the marine business since his high school days when he worked part time in the old Marine Mail Order stores around Toronto... After graduating from university with a degree in History, he worked at the venerable Tom Taylor Company running their rigging department. In later years he became captain of the HMS BEE replica warship on Georgian Bay. He has a consulting practice dealing with the outfitting and operation of both classic sailing yachts and historic sailing ships all over North America. Laco has often become involved in advising and training as these vessels are returned to service following either new construction or comprehensive refits.

Laco will be doing a detailed sailor's description of the design, rigging and sailing performance of four significant sailing vessels he has been involved with professionally. These will be a mix of classic racing yachts, and historic replicas.

Laco is going to discuss the original configuration of the vessels when first built, their original service, and how they were either rebuilt recently or replicas were built. He will then talk about what it's like to sail them... What they're good at, what they're not so good at, what handling quirks they've got that are good and not so good, all the while expressing his fascination with traditional performance sailing.
All these vessels have character and strengths - all were built to provide the best performance that the technology and the understanding of design could afford them. All are exciting to sail.

As told by a sailor to sailors!

We hope you will join us for what will prove to be a very interesting evening

SAIL TRIM SEMINAR with Brian Chapman of Sail Designer UK Sailmakers Toronto
Thursday April 7 2016  7-9 pm

As some of you may already know, Humber College has closed the Humber Sailing and Powerboat Centre, which has been our long-standing partner in providing the Adult Basic Cruising Program. We were informed of this just a few weeks ago, and have already begun the process of establishing ABYC as a Registered Boating School (RBS) for keelboats. In fact, we have taken this opportunity to realize our dream of expanding our educational offerings, becoming a year-round resource specifically for ABYC members.
  • Coastal Navigation and Maritime Radio (Restricted Operators Certificate - ROC) Winter 2016 Call Roxanne to register! We have enlisted
Diane Reid, ABYC's 'rock star' of sailing, to offer two courses this winter
    See posters below for details.
    • The Coastal Nav course has limited enrollment, so act fast.

    • (IF YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR RADIO CERTIFICATE, YOU HAD BETTER GET ONE... IT'S THE LAW...)

  • The Face of Racing - Saturday, May 14, 2016  Diane will also be offering a 1-day introduction to racing for those who have already spent some time on the water. Students will be introduce to the fundamentals of racing: parts of the race course, the start line, sail evolutions and how they differ from what they already know, sail selection, and their role onboard.
  • Adult Keelboat (Basic Cruising) Program  We will be offering our full array of choices for the Adult Keelboat (Basic Cruising) program this summer. Instructors are in place, and Tricanna is being readied for the job! See the website for the schedule and registration form. If you don't need the course yourself, please refer your friends. Many of our students come from member referrals. Remember, the prime early spots fill fast!!!!
  • Intermediate Cruising Course  We will be offering two choices for the 5-day live aboard Intermediate Cruising Course - June 20-24 and July 25-29. Plus!! There will be an opportunity to take this course in British Columbia in late May or early June. (More on this later, but you can let us know if you would be interested.)

We have ideas for other seminars and courses, so stay tuned. Suggestions are always welcome. Learning about sailing is part of the ABYC mission. We are looking forward to it!
