Children's Christmas Party

Santa's arrival at ABYC may have lacked a light snowfall but, thanks to a police escort, he arrived safely and still managed to put a smile on the faces of children and adults alike.

I would like to thank everyone who made this event a huge success; Santa's elves, Star and Jingles, Rudolf, Linda, our musical team, Martin and Julius, Lynn,
Willie, (the Irish Team), Jeremy, and Chef Jan and his amazing crew for a wonderful lunch.

Thank you all again,

Liz Heron
Tree Raising and Trimming

ABYC members and guests were treated to another fantastic dinner by chef Jan and staff at our annual Christmas Dinner last Friday evening. After dinner a rousing round of Christmas Carols was enjoyed by all. A special thank you to the volunteers that helped to arrange, raise, and decorate the Christmas Tree in time for the Christmas Dinner and Children's Christmas Party.

A very special thank you to the volunteers and staff that make the season special for all of us at ABYC.

Happy holidays,
Debbie & Don

Since assuming the role of Senior Vice Commodore in September, I've been observing and getting up to speed on various issues and opportunities at the Club. One observation is the incredible dedication of our membership in making ABYC a better place. This is evident in our planning, problem solving and open dialogue. We have a lot on our collective plates and it's impressive to see so many volunteers stepping up in so many areas.

As mentioned at the September AGM, in 2016, we'll be looking at changes to mandatory work hours and or the rate at which these are charged. The purpose of which is to better reflect the reality of what it takes to keep things moving in the right direction. More will follow at the January AGM.

As a reminder, we currently require members to contribute a minimum of twenty (20) hours over the course of the year. Contribution may be made either as physical effort or by payment at the set rate. Physical work hours are logged on the ABYC website, in the Members section through the Job Jar. It is each member's sole responsibility to track and enter their work hours prior to December 31. New members are required to physically contribute in the first two years of membership as the payment option is not available.

The work hours by member data is being reviewed now and we encourage you to take a moment to check your records on-line to ensure that your valued contribution is logged. Should you require assistance in how to access and update your files, please contact the office and they will help you.

For those still looking for hours, work around the club is still in progress and many committees need volunteers. Reach out and get involved!

Regards,

Brian Meret

ABYC Co-op Program Expanded

New Boat for the Program

It's official - the co-op program has a new boat!  Earlier this fall, we embarked on a mission to purchase a new boat for the co-op program. Up until now, we've had two C&C 25's in our fleet, but the popularity of the program has been increasing steadily and this season we were unable to accommodate all of the applicants. This is mostly due to the new introductory co-op membership we introduced a year ago, which allows students graduating from the Keelboat Learn-to-Sail program to roll into the co-op program at a prorated cost.

In considering a new boat for the program, our mandate was to find a slightly larger boat in order to attract/retain more experienced members for daytime or weekend cruising. Destinee, a C&C 29 MKII, will be spending the winter at Outer Harbour and moving to ABYC in mid-April, in time for the 2016 season.

Many thanks to Bob Wilson and Colin Anderson who were on the team with me and provided invaluable advice throughout the search and buying process. We considered many boats in our search - and even traveled some distance to inspect them! It was a great (and fun) learning experience.

If you have any questions about the boat or the program, please don't hesitate to reach out.

D I Y Boat Restoration Opportunity

Fancy Yourself a Boat Builder? Try This On for Size

'KAOS' 1971 C&C 27 MK 1 is available FREE to an enterprising ABYC member who will restore her to sailing condition.

'KAOS' was not launched in 2015 due to illness and, since Brian Hollingshead's passing, the boat is now in his estate. Brian's brothers are not interested in keeping the boat.

Brian's brothers know how much sailing and ABYC meant to Brian and believe that they are following his wishes by offering the boat to a member who will take the initiative to do the necessary repairs and detailing to get her sailing again.

If you believe there is a boat builder hidden inside you trying to get out then this project may be perfect for you.

Contact Colin Andrews who is acting on behalf of Brian's brothers.

Gordon Laco - Marine Historian

On Thursday, January 14, 2016 we are privileged to have world renowned Marine Historian Gordon Laco as our speaker. Laco will be speaking at the Toronto Boat Show the following week.

During his long and illustrious career, Laco has had the opportunity to work on many historical naval projects, as well as to be a naval consultant for many Hollywood films. One of his most notable films was Master and Commander, The Far Side of the World, where he was Head Technical Adviser and Historical Consultant.
Gord Laco has been in the marine business since his high school days when he worked part time in the old Marine Mail Order stores around Toronto... After graduating from university with a degree in History, he worked at the venerable Tom Taylor Company running their rigging department. In later years he became captain of the HMS BEE replica warship on Georgian Bay. He has a consulting practice dealing with the outfitting and operation of both classic sailing yachts and historic sailing ships all over North America. Laco has often become involved in advising and training as these vessels are returned to service following either new construction or comprehensive refits.

Laco will be doing a detailed sailor's description of the design, rigging and sailing performance of four significant sailing vessels he has been involved with professionally. These will be a mix of classic racing yachts, and historic replicas.

Laco is going to discuss the original configuration of the vessels when first built, their original service, and how they were either rebuilt recently or replicas were built. He will then talk about what it's like to sail them... What they're good at, what they're not so good at, what handling quirks they've got that are good and not so good, all the while expressing his fascination with traditional performance sailing.
All these vessels have character and strengths - all were built to provide the best performance that the technology and the understanding of design could afford them. All are exciting to sail.

As told by a sailor to sailors!

We hope you will join us for what will prove to be a very interesting evening

A Memorial for Don Jackson

As mentioned last week, shortly after Don passed away, the question of a suitable memorial was raised. One idea that emerged was an artistic steel sculpture that would reflect the kind of work Don did for the club and the help he provided to members during his time with us. I know we could make such an item if we had a suitable design. In fact, with basic instruction and proper supervision, anyone who wanted to add a piece to the structure could do so and thus become a meaningful part of the project.

This idea seems to have appeal to many of Don's friends. We would appreciate your comments and suggestions for how best to complete this tribute.
  • Do you think this would be a suitable memorial? Would you like to suggest an alternative?
  • Do you have any ideas for the design of such a sculpture? Sketches or pictures would be helpful.
  • If completed, where should it be placed on the club grounds?
  • Although the cost will be modest, we would have to raise some funds. Would you like to make a small contribution to a memorial fund?
Please reply to Gus Gillespie at gusgillespie@rogers.comI will collect the responses and see if a viable plan emerges.
