On the Other Side of the World

The Clipper Race just started its next leg from Albany in south west Australia, and the names Frenchman's Bay and Vancouver now ring familiar. The link between our own waters and these can be found in this fascinating Captain Cook documentary series on youtube, who once visited ABYC in 1760 but we weren't open yet. Cook's charts have been used well into the 20 century. Worth the watch while the boat's on the hard, and let someone else steer.

A Memorial for Don Jackson

Shortly after Don passed away, the question of a suitable memorial was raised. One idea that emerged was an artistic steel sculpture that would reflect the kind of work Don did for the club and the help he provided to members during his time with us. I know we could make such an item if we had a suitable design. In fact, with basic instruction and proper supervision, anyone who wanted to add a piece to the structure could do so and thus become a meaningful part of the project.

This idea seems to have appeal to many of Don's friends. We would appreciate your comments and suggestions for how best to complete this tribute.
  • Do you think this would be a suitable memorial? Would you like to suggest an alternative?
  • Do you have any ideas for the design of such a sculpture? Sketches or pictures would be helpful.
  • If completed, where should it be placed on the club grounds?
  • Although the cost will be modest, we would have to raise some funds. Would you like to make a small contribution to a memorial fund?
Please reply to Gus Gillespie at gusgillespie@rogers.comI will collect the responses and see if a viable plan emerges.

Work Party Season

Fall Work Parties - Saturday, December 5

Saturday is Sunny and 8 degrees and we have a few more projects we are hoping to finish off while the weather is still fairly warm:
  • Finish stripping 'White Wall' including cutting existing protruding bolts at 45 degrees.
  • Installing temporary supports for Red and Green Docks and removing 3' section against wall.
  • Cutting up the raft of the old pile driver, remove hulk from Club property.
  • Building supports (3) for 'ice-eaters'.
Thank you!

ABYC Adult Learn-to-Sail Program

Sign Up Now!!

As some of you may already know, Humber College has closed the Humber Sailing and Powerboat Centre, which has been our long-standing partner in providing the Adult Basic Cruising Program. We were informed of this just a few weeks ago, and have already begun the process of establishing ABYC as a Registered Boating School (RBS) for keelboats. In fact, we have taken this opportunity to realize our dream of expanding our educational offerings, becoming a year-round resource specifically for ABYC members.
  • Coastal Navigation and Maritime Radio (Restricted Operators Certificate - ROC) Winter 2016 Call Roxanne to register! We have enlisted
Diane Reid, ABYC's 'rock star' of sailing, to offer two courses this winter
    See posters below for details.
    • The Coastal Nav course has limited enrollment, so act fast.

    • (IF YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR RADIO CERTIFICATE, YOU HAD BETTER GET ONE... IT'S THE LAW...)

  • The Face of Racing - Saturday, May 14, 2016  Diane will also be offering a 1-day introduction to racing for those who have already spent some time on the water. Students will be introduce to the fundamentals of racing: parts of the race course, the start line, sail evolutions and how they differ from what they already know, sail selection, and their role onboard.
  • Adult Keelboat (Basic Cruising) Program  We will be offering our full array of choices for the Adult Keelboat (Basic Cruising) program this summer. Instructors are in place, and Tricanna is being readied for the job! See the website for the schedule and registration form. If you don't need the course yourself, please refer your friends. Many of our students come from member referrals. Remember, the prime early spots fill fast!!!!
  • Intermediate Cruising Course  We will be offering two choices for the 5-day live aboard Intermediate Cruising Course - June 20-24 and July 25-29. Plus!! There will be an opportunity to take this course in British Columbia in late May or early June. (More on this later, but you can let us know if you would be interested.)

We have ideas for other seminars and courses, so stay tuned. Suggestions are always welcome. Learning about sailing is part of the ABYC mission. We are looking forward to it!
