Work Party Season

Fall Work Parties - Saturday, November 28

Here are some of the jobs for this upcoming Saturday:
  • We have ordered wooden beams to be reinstalled along the patio walkways, we could use 3 - 4 people to help with that.
  • Re-welding the parapet rails at the top level.
  • Removal & cut up of the pile driver raft - trained steel cutters needed in addition to general clean up help.
  • Repair the floating ramps (tear off tops, adjust barrels, replace timbers, red deck).
  • Fix front gate post.
  • Yard work.
Thank you!

ABYC Adult Learn-to-Sail Program

As some of you may already know, Humber College has closed the Humber Sailing and Powerboat Centre, which has been our long-standing partner in providing the Adult Basic Cruising Program. We were informed of this just a few weeks ago, and have already begun the process of establishing ABYC as a Registered Boating School (RBS) for keelboats. In fact, we have taken this opportunity to realize our dream of expanding our educational offerings, becoming a year-round resource specifically for ABYC members.
  • Coastal Navigation and Maritime Radio (Restricted Operators Certificate - ROC) Winter 2016 Call Roxanne to register! We have enlisted
Diane Reid, ABYC's 'rock star' of sailing, to offer two courses this winter
    See posters below for details.
    • The Coastal Nav course has limited enrollment, so act fast.

    • (IF YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR RADIO CERTIFICATE, YOU HAD BETTER GET ONE... IT'S THE LAW...)

  • The Face of Racing - Saturday, May 14, 2016  Diane will also be offering a 1-day introduction to racing for those who have already spent some time on the water. Students will be introduce to the fundamentals of racing: parts of the race course, the start line, sail evolutions and how they differ from what they already know, sail selection, and their role onboard.
  • Adult Keelboat (Basic Cruising) Program  We will be offering our full array of choices for the Adult Keelboat (Basic Cruising) program this summer. Instructors are in place, and Tricanna is being readied for the job! See the website for the schedule and registration form. If you don't need the course yourself, please refer your friends. Many of our students come from member referrals. Remember, the prime early spots fill fast!!!!
  • Intermediate Cruising Course  We will be offering two choices for the 5-day live aboard Intermediate Cruising Course - June 20-24 and July 25-29. Plus!! There will be an opportunity to take this course in British Columbia in late May or early June. (More on this later, but you can let us know if you would be interested.)

We have ideas for other seminars and courses, so stay tuned. Suggestions are always welcome. Learning about sailing is part of the ABYC mission. We are looking forward to it!

Jules Verne Trophy

This is a note about a part of sailing that is about as different as it can be from what we do in our spare time and still use wind power alone to move boats through the water.

Last Saturday two sailboats set out to try to win the Jules Verne Trophy, which is awarded to the boat that sails around the world the fastest. There are pretty much no other rules, except for the designated start and finish line at the west end of the English Channel, keeping Antarctica to starboard and the fact that you are not allowed to motor. The deed for the trophy was established in 1990 after some discussions among sailors whether it would be possible for a sailing vessel to circumnavigate the world in less than 80 days, hence the name. The first record was set in 1993 at 79 days, 6 hours, 15 minutes and 56 seconds. The current record was set in 2012 at 45 days, 13 hours, 42 minutes, 53 seconds or about 6 ½ weeks for a full circumnavigation via the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn. That works out to an average speed of 19.75 knots for 45 days.

As I write this on Monday evening, almost exactly two days after the start, one boat, Spindrift 2, has traveled 1,425 nautical miles in just over 47 hours for an average speed of 32 knots. The other, IDEC Sport, traveled 1,314 miles in 49 hours at 30.8 knots. Technically, they don`t sail against each other. They only sail against the clock. Both boats can be tracked on the Internet (surprise, surprise) and I expect to follow them since I find this stuff fascinating.

I also think the trophy is beautiful.

Racing Award Winners

A Few Important Comments

The big winners of the night were Fauvette, Stapleton, and Ashbridge, together with many awards such as the Stacy, Davis, and Patterson contribution.

The evening's presenters offered gracious thanks and praise:
  • Bart Smit won the Ashbridge Trophy for Best Overall with Nautical Symphony. He was praised for bringing the most prestige to the club through accomplishments at local, provincial, national, or international competition. Congratulations went to Bart Smit and Pascal Desrosiers, and to David Holmes and Gitte Frederiksen who crewed the boat for every event this past season.
  • Graham Toms won the Stapleton Trophy for Best Overall in Club with The Cat Came Back. Recognized as having a marked improvement in racing results, Graham's black J120 scored very high in series racing and outside the club, with first place finishes in the Donald Summerville Long Distance Race. In fact, in the TELDS Whitby 100 mile race, they were the ONLY boat in their division to finish in that terrible storm. Congratulations to Graham and Julie Toms.
  • Ian Doell won the Fauvette Trophy for Best Overall Top Junior. Ian was praised for his accomplishments, such as his first year Laser Radial, 2nd overall Ontario Gran Prix Series, 4th overall Fogh Gold Cup Series, 2nd Place Four Sisters Regatta PCYC and more.
  • Chuck Gravely was commended for tireless supporting of youth sailing, with the Outstanding Contribution Stacy Trophy.
  • Brian Chapman was awarded the Alice Patterson Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Contributions to the sailing committee, supporting many events, such as managing the Family Races and volunteering his sailmaking skills!
  • Diane Reid, appointed as the first Canadian female skipper for the world's longest ocean race on Clipper+Telemed in the Clipper Round the World, warranted a commendation, as she led an amateur crew from London to Rio de Janeiro, and then on to Capetown.
  • Please see the list below for a complete overview of the winners.
A special thank you went to the Sailing Committee for planning our season:
Past Chair Brian Chapman, Current Chair Calum Semple, Roger Van Vlack, Joanne Wright, , Rebecca Crumlish, John Chittley, Grant Dietrich, Scott Elliott, Nancy Ogden, Jean Gap, Chris Pappas, Eriks Kalvins, Shaun Carey, Gord Burt, Dave Steenbergen, Drew Robertson, Molly Asseltine, John Moody, Petra Fischer, Jim Allen,  and Paul McDonald!

A big thank you went to the Race Committee, having invited those with 60+ hours at club races:
Elaine Parker, Liz MacIntyre, Max Smith, Neil Payne, Stan Gap, Wendy Loat, and Paul Brennan.
Molly Asseltine contributed 157 hours on the water in 2015, not including her time recruiting race committee volunteers.

Bart Smit forwarded a comment as well to be included in this newsletter, "We bought a J80, 3 years ago and Camille Clark introduced us to David Holmes. David is one of the top sailers at our club and he as taken us from ordinary sailers to being very competitive sailers. He is our ABYC mentor. Pascal and I would like to thank David and Gitte Frederiksen tor their endless commitment and dedication. We would like to thank Paul Brennan and Brian Chapman for their support and there mentorship.Thank you Mike Macdonald, who insisted that we join ABYC."

There were also many comments on the wonderful food Chef Jan and his team prepared, and that Victoria and her team served.

Racing Awards Additional Thanks

Fantastic Racing Awards Night!

Great folks, great food and great fun, thanks to the many people involved in this year's presentation night.

The night was a wonderful success due to the diligent planning and execution by Rennie and our terrific staff. The food was delicious and the service prompt and, as always, friendly - many thanks to Jan and Victoria and their teams.

The trophies shined brightly thanks to Bill Logie who regularly shines them and the team at the work party in November.  A special thanks to Simon Parsons who not only worked long and hard retrieving the trophies up and down the stairs, but was an invaluable assistant during the handing out of the awards.

Special thanks to Shawn Carey who prepared the spreadsheet that made my job easier when ordering the flags and trophies. And last, but certainly not least, a heartfelt thanks to Paul Brennan who was always there to help me whenever I had questions about the awards or the evening.

Great times thanks to all.

LYRA Award - Nautical Symphony

One-Design Boat Of The Year

For many years the LYRA boat of the year award has recognized outstanding performance over the sailing season by a boat from a LYRA member club. Starting last year, LYRA decided to make two awards: one to the handicap racing boat of the year, and one to the one-design boat of the year.

I'm delighted to tell you that Nautical Symphony has been selected as the LYRA one-design boat of the year for 2015.

We would like to present the award at the LYRA annual general meeting at Whitby Yacht Club on November 21.
Best regards,

David Steenbergen

Winter Cruise to Niagara Falls

We are planning a winter cruise (bus trip) to Niagara Falls in January or February. Although the details still need to be finalized this is the high level plan.
  • Pick up bus from ABYC on Saturday. See proposed weekends below.
  • Hotel for Saturday night, possibly Hilton Fallsview which is attached to the casino.
  • $10 voucher per day ($10 for Saturday & $10 for Sunday) on players advantage card which can be applied for separately.
  • Buffet Breakfast on Sunday morning.
  • Return to ABYC on Sunday.
  • Possible stop at a winery for a wine tasting on the return trip.
The pricing is kind of a chicken or egg thing. I know you are all interested in the cost but the hotel needs dates and approximate numbers because the room cost is based on availability. At this point, we are looking for a level of interest. For sure we will not be able to align with everyone's schedules so I have selected a few dates that do not seem to conflict with ABYC internal events or some of the bigger external events like Family Day, Valentine's Day, or Super Bowl.

I have put a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the communications room beside the main lobby. If you sign up on the list, it does not commit you to attending. We are looking for a level of interest and this will give us a distribution list for further communication. I am proposing the following dates:
  • Jan 30th
  • Feb 20th
  • Feb 27th
If you could identify which dates work for you in the applicable field on the sign-up sheet, it would help. I am hoping to continue my discussion with the hotel later this week so the earlier that you can sign up the better. You can also email the office and ask them to sign you up if you are unable to get to the club.
