Work Party

State of ABYC Grounds / Fall Work Parties

The weather has been warmer than normal for this time of year, and last Saturday was a sunny, warm fall day - perfect for working outside at the club. Following a tour around the Club grounds it was upsetting to see all of the contaminated soil that has done so much damage to the entrance of our Club. We are awaiting the decision regarding the removal of the soil but a lot of work will be needed in the spring months to make it once again an attractive entrance that we can be proud of.

For now, we have a few jobs on the go which will take a few weekends to complete so, if you have some time, please come on down and lend a hand. Work parties are from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Saturday mornings.

We have the following jobs open:
  • Pour concrete into fence post holes beside the club.
  • Replace the bricks along the walkway.
  • Remove & cut up of the pile driver raft - trained steel cutters needed in addition to general clean up help.
  • Repair the floating ramps (tear off tops, adjust barrels, replace timbers, redeck).
  • Fix front gate post.
  • Yard work
    • Several branches are down from the winds.
    • Blue dock park has branches to be cleared and one large branch just hanging down from a tree that should be removed.
    • Tidy up the entrance to Bay Belle (cut back and tidied) and general clean up of the area.
    • The little area just west of the sailing school has a cedar bush in the centre and is full of golden rod and weeds.
    • The dogwood bushes outside of Casa Ballman are full of garbage and need to be cleaned and trimmed.
There are many things to be done and these are just the really obvious ones, but a good way to earn those hours you may need.

Thanks to all who are able to spend some time on these areas. Hopefully the weather holds and we are able to clear out some of these gardens.

Cruising Awards Night

Cruising Awards Report

It was Friday the 13th of November and ABYC's cruisers braved all forms of bad spirits (never met a cocktail we didn't like) and gathered together for the 2015 ABYC Cruising Awards. Over 70 members with families and children in tow shared a special evening with an excellent buffet dinner and a particularly entertaining and challenging presentation for the 2015 Cruising Trophies, Awards and Flag winners.

First are some highlights from the 2015 season:
  • 12 cruises were executed including the South Wall Cruise; 2 cancelled or relocated due to weather.
  • 1000 Islands Rendezvous, resurrected after many years and our first ever anchoring cruise.
  • 78 individual member boats participated (22% increase over 2014).
  • Grand total of 290 boats (85% increase over 2014).
  • Average of 20 boats per cruise (33% increase over 2014).

The 2015 Trophy and Award Winners are:

Harbourmaster's Hat  Amarone ll - Bruce Hannah and Claude Tremblay
Ports of Call Trophy  Double Dutch - Jen & Fred Braches
Hans Ballman Trophy  Solitude - Tina & Danno Heimann
Jack Shirt Trophy  First Pilot - Maxine & Giles Lewis
Ron Mitchell Trophy  Akula - Cindy and Ron Boudah
Ed Wilson Trophy  Away - Judith and Mitch Wine
Cruising Captain's Discretionary Award  yKnot - Yanick Landry & Michael 'Tommy' Thompson

In addition, 32 members attended 4 to 7 cruises and 7 members attended 8 cruises or more. AYBC cruisers also logged over 7800 reported miles on the lake this year and 17 members were awarded flags for 250nm, 500nm and 1000nm.

A list of flag recipients will be posted on the ABYC website/member access/Cruising.

For the cruising program, we would like to thank the following people for making 2015 an amazing season:
  • The ABYC Office Staff, Restaurant Staff and Bosuns for organizing and welcoming the cruisers from other clubs.
  • Joanne Wright who arranged for, and delivered, our cruising flags and trophies.
  • ABYC Regalia Team for the cruising sweaters.
  • Claude Tremblay, our photographer of the awards evening.
We would also like to thank Jean Gap who is stepping down as Cruise Captain. We appreciated her help through the 2015 season and wish her & Stan well as they explore Georgian Bay. We are pleased to announce that after a yearlong sabbatical in the Bahamas, Ron & Cindy Boudah will be stepping in to fill the vacant role.

Finally, the Cruising Captains would like thank the ABYC cruising members and cruise hosts for their overwhelming support in 2015 and we look forward to an even better 2016 season .... one that may start sooner than you think.

Stay tuned to S2S for more 'cruising' information.

Winter Cruise to Niagara Falls

We are planning a winter cruise (bus trip) to Niagara Falls in January or February. Although the details still need to be finalized this is the high level plan.
  • Pick up bus from ABYC on Saturday. See proposed weekends below.
  • Hotel for Saturday night, possibly Hilton Fallsview which is attached to the casino.
  • $10 voucher per day ($10 for Saturday & $10 for Sunday) on players advantage card which can be applied for separately.
  • Buffet Breakfast on Sunday morning.
  • Return to ABYC on Sunday.
  • Possible stop at a winery for a wine tasting on the return trip.
The pricing is kind of a chicken or egg thing. I know you are all interested in the cost but the hotel needs dates and approximate numbers because the room cost is based on availability. At this point, we are looking for a level of interest. For sure we will not be able to align with everyone's schedules so I have selected a few dates that do not seem to conflict with ABYC internal events or some of the bigger external events like Family Day, Valentine's Day, or Super Bowl.

I have put a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the communications room beside the main lobby. If you sign up on the list, it does not commit you to attending. We are looking for a level of interest and this will give us a distribution list for further communication. I am proposing the following dates:
  • Jan 30th
  • Feb 20th
  • Feb 27th
If you could identify which dates work for you in the applicable field on the sign-up sheet, it would help. I am hoping to continue my discussion with the hotel later this week so the earlier that you can sign up the better. You can also email the office and ask them to sign you up if you are unable to get to the club.

Toonie Thursday Report

Last Thursday evening saw 60+ members and guests turn out to hear Lisa Turnbull and Mark Preston from Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.

Lisa talked about the planned reconfiguration of the entrance to Coatsworth Cut and to the entering area to our harbour which includes two new Break Walls. It is hoped that this new work will solve our annual silting problems in Coatsworth Cut and also the area just outside our harbour mouth. While Lisa presented a very thorough Overview of the Project, Mark was able to answer the many technical questions raised by our members. A Project Brief is also available.

The evening proved to be enlightening and informative and our members left feeling that they were much better informed. At this time the Environmental Assessment has been completed and construction may begin as early as 2016, but no later than 2017, so be prepared for interruption of our normal sailing patterns within the next 18 months.

Our Toonie Thursday collection netted $147.30 for our Junior Sailing Program. We would like to thank all those in attendance for your great questions and your generosity.

Property Notice

Reminder to Everyone

Dear members,

Now that the boats are in the yard, they are very tempting targets for those in society who would like to take your property. We are asking that outboard motors be removed and taken away, and that all ladders be folded and chained securely to the bottom of cradles. At the work party on the weekend, we went around the yard and moved any ladders not chained to a secure place where they can be retrieved.
