Pumpkin Carving and Halloween

Thanks so much to everyone who came out to celebrate Halloween last Saturday night.  What an incredible array of costumes.

The Weathered Legs had the dance floor packed, the bar staff had the glasses full, and members and guests contributed high spirits and boundless enthusiasm.

Prizes were awarded as follows:

Best group costume  -  The Gotham Group
Best male costume  -  The Penguin   (Jonathan Walker, Sr.)
Best female costume  -  Catwoman  (Elaine Johnson)
Best children's costume  -  The Red Man (Aubrey Noriega)

Thank you to our phenomenal bar staff - loved the 'boat' costumes. The staff were dressed as their favourite ABYC boats! Thank you to the Weathered Legs - your sound was fantastic.

A huge thank you to the folks that volunteered their time to help with the Pumpkin Carving, the decorating, and the dismantling. It was a lot of fun.

First of all I would like to thank Debbie, Don, and the rest of the Entertainment crew for a fabulous Halloween party this past Saturday. Although unable to attend I saw how nicely the room was decorated and, based on a few Facebook postings, I have seen there were some great costumes. Also heard it ran a bit late so I guess the Weathered Legs had everyone up on the dance floor. Well done folks! It's our year round entertainment program that keeps our members engaged in the club and is the envy of more than a few clubs in the GTA.

I would like to bring up the events of Friday "Fine Dining" on October 23. Yes, we had some problems and people waited an unacceptably long time for their food. Many people have mentioned that the menu was too big and complicated. This was not the issue. The issue was how and when the orders hit the kitchen. The problem has been identified and we are working on a solution. We will be having the Cruising Awards on November 13 and memories of the 23rd may affect your decision as to whether or not to make a reservation for dinner. I ask that you do not let that affect your decision. To that end for that evening we will institute the ordering system that we use on race nights that is tried and tested for volume orders. As I now own a boat with a bimini and dodger you might even see me there!

That's all I have for this week, see ya at the club!

Remove Dock Lines

Reminder to Everyone

Dock lines, hoses, and power cords have to be removed from the Docks and Mooring Tires. Take advantage of the calm, warm conditions over the next couple of days, as these items can be a hazard or a nuisance to crews working on the docks during fall and winter.

Thanks!

Work Party Season

Fall Is In theAair!

This is a great season to get outside and do some work around the club.  And of course, this is my segue into the Fall All Day Work Party, which will take place Saturday, November 7 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.  We will have lots of jobs to do... yard work, deck work and we even have a job that involves working with an auger! Yipee!  Let me know if you want to work with an auger!  Here is just a taste of the jobs we have so far. If you have any questions, email abycworkparty@hotmail.com:
  • Gardening and yard clean up.
  • Move muskoka chairs to red dock.
  • Clean up garage in Casa Ballman - tools, equip, sweep, and sort.
  • Clean up Casa Ballman - tallow burners, scrap.
  • Tree vine and brush trimming along the railyard.
  • Repair the support frame for the electrical supply lines between green dock fixed and green dock floating.  All vertical support lines should be chained for greater flexibility.  Originally 2 were threaded rod but one has broken.
  • Repair and fix the dingy ramps, 6 people required.
  • Polish marine telegraph.
  • Polish brass on doors upstairs and downstairs.
  • All patio tables and chairs to be put away.
  • Clean windows.
  • Clean stairs, rails.
  • Clean the tops of the lights.
  • Clean all tables and chairs.
  • Children's Playroom - tidy and clean.
  • Clean rafters.
  • Repair and rehang burgee.
  • Polish trophies and clean trophy cases.
  • Repair doors in women's washroom.
  • Reinstalling the steel railing at the west end of the Club House patio (by the shed). This railing was removed by the water main contractor when installing the new main.
The steel railing work will involve the following tasks, equipment, and materials:
  • Straightening one of the two railing sections that are to be reinstalled.
  • Dig holes for the posts. Rental of a manual or power post-hole auger recommended.
  • Remove old concrete from base of posts.
  • Install new concrete around posts. Approximately 10 sacks of "Sackrete" (premixed dry concrete) will be required, which can be obtained from Home Depot or similar store.
  • Estimated manpower required: 3 persons for one day

Cruising Awards Night

5 Questions about the Cruising Awards Night - November 13, 2015

Q1:  What's this night all about?
A:  This is one of the much anticipated annual ABYC events every year. It is the end of the cruising season celebration to acknowledge the accomplishments of our memb
ers that cruise (cruisers) and to recognize the contribution of the volunteers who hosted the cruises. It is a great opportunity for ABYC members to get together and reminisce about the season past and begin planning for the next!

Q2:  Do I need to dress up and make reservations?
A:  No. This event is casual and not a 'formal sit down dinner event'. Dinner reservations make sure you get a good seat. If you plan to eat at the club, please make a reservation so that the Food Services folks can be better prepared. Extra tables will be set up to accommodate those that wish to attend only the presentation of awards and flags starting at 7:45 PM.

Q3:  Who is going to be there?
A:  Everybody that is 'anybody' will be there! Commodore Bob and his lovely wife Pat will be there. Other Board members will be there. Members who cruise and attend club cruises will be there. Members who cruise, race and attend club cruises will be there. Members who attended four or more cruises should be there to receive their 'flag'. Members who cruise and do not attend club cruises might be there. And then there are those that just want to 'hang out' with the friendly cruisers!

Q4:  Why should I go?
A:  Because you are already involved (see Q3) or you are not familiar with the 'Cruising Program', never attended a cruise and want to find out what all the excitement is about, meet the Cruising Captains and ABYC members with an interest in cruising.

Q5:  We are new members and would like to attend but we do not know anyone. Will we be sitting alone?
A:  No. Unless otherwise requested, small parties will be seated together at large tables to encourage dialogue and camaraderie. We do not want anyone sitting alone unless that is their choice.

Please join us for an entertaining evening.

RACE COMMITTEE 2015

It was a very busy time on the water this year. As well as our usual complement of weeknight and weekend events, we also hosted the Ontario Laser Masters and the J24 Canadians. Add to that, the Pan Am games, with which several of our members were involved, and our volunteer resources were stretched pretty much to the limit. We had some tough conditions this year - more than our share of difficult weather with big winds and waves. There was a lot more pitching and rolling with the accompanying sea sickness than any of us wanted to experience. People were tired, nerves were frayed but, once again, ABYC members came through in the crunch and we got through it all, fulfilled our obligations and did the club proud.

Many people stepped up to help out this year and I'd like to start with the weeknight crews. They came out week after week, all season long, and did a great job:

RO's: Rick Humphrey, Tom Shenstone, Paul Brennan, Keri Humber

CREWS: Corinne Lusty, Elaine Parker, Elizabeth Qualben, Stan Gap, Max Smith, Liz MacIntyre, Don MacIntyre, Wendy Moseley, Ann Poole, Jamie Donaldson, Tim Hill,  Noreen Stumpf and Carolyn Weckesser, who came to our rescue many times when we were short handed.

We have a good time on the committee boat and, let's face it, we wouldn't do it otherwise, but these people also work very hard on your behalf to get the best race possible on a given night. It makes my job so much easier knowing that I have such dedicated and dependable people on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Now, on to weekend races and regattas, some of them commitments we owe other clubs in payment for helping us with our regatta. It takes a LOT of people to cover the season and I'm thrilled to say that this year, for the first time, I had crews lined up well in advance of major weekend events - little to no last minute scrambling. Thank you. THANK YOU!

Thanks and gratitude to  everyone. Your time and efforts are very much appreciated.

So that's it for another season. I hope to see you all, as well as some new faces, next year.

November 7 Work Party

A big thanks to all of you who have signed up to help on our all day work party Saturday, November 7.
To date, there seem to be 26 sets of willing hands.

A lot is going to depend on what kind of condition our yard is in. During this last week, I checked out the entrance and railway area and it was still a disaster.

We have lost many trees and plants and my goal is to see if there is anything that can be salvaged, even if it is dug up and put somewhere in the ground for the winter months. It will have to be away from the work site, but anything we can do to help those poor plants would be wonderful. I spent some time during haul out trying to assess the situation, but that seemed to have changed just a few days later.

Sue Hamilton will have a list of some of the things that will be needed done for the work party but a lot of it will be assessing the situation on the day.

I do know that we have to remove all of the vines from the fences, that is quite a chore, plus a general clean up around the Club House and grounds of much debris. If the planters are dead by then, they will all have to be removed and hopefully we can salvage some greenery to make some kind of seasonal decoration.

Look forward to seeing you all on the 7th.
