Fall Season and a Few New Features In Store

The mark of the changing season as the boats get bedded down on the hard gives us an opportunity to reflect on the comments we've received these past few months. Without exception, Ship2Shore readers are very proud of ABYC and we will be introducing a few new article sections based on similar requests. For example, people were excited to read Dianne Bott's updates on the international Clipper Race featuring our very own Diane Reid on Clippertelemed+. We are obviously interested in what our members are doing both locally and afar.

Once we are past the awards nights, we will be letting you know of some additional features and are always keen to hear from you anytime at s2seditors@gmail.com.

Monthly Restaurant Statement

This is a reminder that, starting with your October statement, you will receive your Monthly Restaurant Receivable Statement by email, which will be sent in October.

Moving to email statement distribution will:
  1. Reduce paper consumption.
  2. Save mailing and printing costs.
  3. Provide you with your statements more quickly and reliably.
If you haven't already done so, we ask that you do a couple of things for us by the end of the month:
  1. If you are not sure that the Club has the correct email address for you, please check in the Member Directory Listing - Downloadable PDFs (Members Area). To receive your statements at a different address, simply call the office 416-698-4498 or send an email to admin@abyc.on.ca.
  2. The statement will be sent from officeadministrator@abyc.on.ca. Please add this email address as a Safe Sender in your email program to ensure that the statement doesn't automatically go to your junk box.
Please note that for now this will apply only to your Monthly Restaurant Receivable Statements. Statements for Membership Dues and Fees will continue to be sent to you by mail with the other mailings from the club

November 7 Work Party

A big thanks to all of you who have signed up to help on our all day work party Saturday, November 7.
To date, there seem to be 26 sets of willing hands.

A lot is going to depend on what kind of condition our yard is in. During this last week, I checked out the entrance and railway area and it was still a disaster.

We have lost many trees and plants and my goal is to see if there is anything that can be salvaged, even if it is dug up and put somewhere in the ground for the winter months. It will have to be away from the work site, but anything we can do to help those poor plants would be wonderful. I spent some time during haul out trying to assess the situation, but that seemed to have changed just a few days later.

Sue Hamilton will have a list of some of the things that will be needed done for the work party but a lot of it will be assessing the situation on the day.

I do know that we have to remove all of the vines from the fences, that is quite a chore, plus a general clean up around the Club House and grounds of much debris. If the planters are dead by then, they will all have to be removed and hopefully we can salvage some greenery to make some kind of seasonal decoration.

Look forward to seeing you all on the 7th.

Work Party Season

Fall is in the air!

This is a great season to get outside and do some work around the club.  And of course, this is my segue into the Fall All Day Work Party, which will take place Saturday, November 7 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.  We will have lots of jobs to do... yard work, deck work and we even have a job that involves working with an auger! Yipee!  Let me know if you want to work with an auger!  Here is just a taste of the jobs we have so far. If you have any questions, email abycworkparty@hotmail.com:
  • Gardening and yard clean up.
  • Move muskoka chairs to red dock.
  • Clean up garage in Casa Ballman - tools, equip, sweep, and sort.
  • Clean up Casa Ballman - tallow burners, scrap.
  • Tree vine and brush trimming along the railyard.
  • Repair the support frame for the electrical supply lines between green dock fixed and green dock floating.  All vertical support lines should be chained for greater flexibility.  Originally 2 were threaded rod but one has broken.
  • Repair and fix the dingy ramps, 6 people required.
  • Polish marine telegraph.
  • Polish brass on doors upstairs and downstairs.
  • All patio tables and chairs to be put away.
  • Clean windows.
  • Clean stairs, rails.
  • Clean the tops of the lights.
  • Clean all tables and chairs.
  • Children's Playroom - tidy and clean.
  • Clean rafters.
  • Repair and rehang burgee.
  • Polish trophies and clean trophy cases.
  • Repair doors in women's washroom.
  • Reinstalling the steel railing at the west end of the Club House patio (by the shed). This railing was removed by the water main contractor when installing the new main.
The steel railing work will involve the following tasks, equipment, and materials:
  • Straightening one of the two railing sections that are to be reinstalled.
  • Dig holes for the posts. Rental of a manual or power post-hole auger recommended.
  • Remove old concrete from base of posts.
  • Install new concrete around posts. Approximately 10 sacks of "Sackrete" (premixed dry concrete) will be required, which can be obtained from Home Depot or similar store.
  • Estimated manpower required: 3 persons for one day

Job Jar

Construction on Job Jar

We are in the process of amalgamating the projects and jobs in the Job Jar software. We aim to be done in less than two weeks. Most of you will be receiving regular emails from the team as we work on the software, giving you instructions on how to report your hours in the new job names. You will notice that new job names are now appearing in your job list. You don't have to do anything about previously recorded hours. Those hours are safe and show up in your tally of contribution hours.

Please, please, do not attempt to create/delete/edit any projects or jobs.

As soon as we're done, we'll send out a list of the projects and the jobs underneath each project.

Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

Final Report

On Thursday, October 22 early in the morning, Diane and team Clippertelemed+ crossed the finish line in Cape Town in 5th position. This leg had been two weeks of very heavy winds up to 50 knots and very heavy seas. They experienced sea sickness and yet were still able to get a good finish.

On Saturday, the word came from the organizers that Diane had resigned as skipper of Clippertelemed+ and was being replaced.  Several of you contacted me to see if I had answers, which I did not at that time.

On Sunday, I received an email from Diane which included the following for me to publish in S2S:

"Hello everyone,

As you may have seen in the latest Clipper information, I am coming home. Unfortunately, the statement that they released said I had chosen to come home for family reasons. That of course is a fairly generic statement and what Clipper didn't realize was that that would instantly send off alarms that something was up with Paul and I. Nothing could be further from the truth except that it will be very nice to be home with him.

Back in the first part of the race from Rio to Cape Town I was really struggling with the balance of keeping an amateur crew safe and pushing the boat. I mean really, really struggling. To the point where I sent in my resignation. I knew I was capable of doing the job, but I got to a point where I decided that I didn't want to to do the job and didn't want to have the responsibility of all those lives. Then my guys started doing things. Sounds silly, but they were little things like getting the kite up without a massive kite-mare or gybing without things going sideways, all without any coaching from me at all. They were becoming a safe and smart independent team....all as a product of their hard work and my teachings. So I retracted my decision....or so I thought. Bottom line was that since I sent it in an email I couldn't retract it and I've been replaced.

Live and learn and move on :-) No more southern ocean for me for now, but I will however be in your faces in a few days! Looking forward to seeing you all soon."

You can follow the race here at clipperroundtheworld.com.

There will be trackers on board, a virtual race, and of course tons of media stuff coming back from the boats for you to keep up on everything.
