Change of Season

From wet to hard in a weekend; the amazing work of ABYC members coming together as a team. Hats off to the coordinators, and thanks to the members who made it happen.

What's New At The Club This Week

Well another haul out over and done. This one was a bit of a nail biter with water main and gate issues but in true ABYC style we got it done. I would like to thank you for your patience and understanding while the club was closed. Without water we are not able to cook, clean washrooms and most importantly we do not have any fire suppression. The upside was that lunch at haul out gave us all a second Thanksgiving dinner!

Our restaurant will change to winter hours next week. We will be closed Monday and Tuesday, and open Wednesday and Thursday 4-10 pm, Friday 12-10 pm, Saturday 8 am to 8 pm, and Sunday 11 am to 7 pm.

Regalia had a successful weekend with a lot of product sold. Watch the website and Ship2Shore for some specials that would make great Christmas gifts. Speaking of Christmas, if you or your company are looking for a venue for a Christmas party or any other type of event, please consider your club. Chef Jan and Victoria can work with you to make a memorable event.

That's all I have for this week. See ya at the club!

Monthly Restaurant Statement

This is a reminder that, starting with your October statement, you will receive your Monthly Restaurant Receivable Statement by email, which will be sent in early October.

Moving to email statement distribution will:
  1. Reduce paper consumption.
  2. Save mailing and printing costs.
  3. Provide you with your statements more quickly and reliably.
If you haven't already done so, we ask that you do a couple of things for us by the end of the month:
  1. If you are not sure that the Club has the correct email address for you, please check in the Member Directory Listing - Downloadable PDFs (Members Area). To receive your statements at a different address, simply call the office 416-698-4498 or send an email to [email protected].
  2. The statement will be sent from [email protected]. Please add this email address as a Safe Sender in your email program to ensure that the statement doesn't automatically go to your junk box.
Please note that for now this will apply only to your Monthly Restaurant Receivable Statements. Statements for Membership Dues and Fees will continue to be sent to you by mail with the other mailings from the club

A Haul Out Thank You!

Please join me in saying Thank You! to the Dock Ladies (and one Lad) who worked during all three days of haul out. These people worked with the crane and rail foremen, the boat owners, and on the PA to make sure the right boat was at the right haul out location at the right moment!

Ladies In White

Please join me in thanking our tireless 'Ladies-in-White' of the Tallow Crew, who once again did such a marvelous job of keeping things sliding smoothly, regardless of how chilly it was (I was even taking a blow torch to the tallow drum).

Kudos to Our Stalwart Members

Pat Chittley, Susan Hogan, Trixie Hoyer, and Eleanor MacKay.  Great work ladies! Couldn't do it without you.

And an extra thank you should also go to Johnny B, who is always there in the wee hours of the morning, making sure that the fire is lit and the soup is on. Thanks Johnny!

Nancy Wilson
Tallow Crew Coordinator
Crane Crew

This was my first shot at organizing the crane side of haul out, and a resounding thanks to all who helped make it work. There were several planning gaps which would have been missed had individuals not stepped up and filled in so a sincere thank you to those who, with great patience, provided guidance.

The haul out success is due to the activity of all, without which I would not have had a leg to stand on.
The two days were busy as, once again, the boat count has increased. After allowance for some events that were not on the schedule, we maintained an average pace of five boats per hour on each crane, with no major incidents. ABYC creative juices were helping a number of times as we had to problem solve unforeseen issues.

Thanks all!

Another ABYC Haul Out and Lots of Fun!

Everyone had a safe haul out.  Boat Riders you were fabulous - Alison Brannen, Barry Webster, Bart Smit, Dan Gregory, Christy Buchanan, Dawn Carey, Emily Sawolak, Heinz Gerbers, Gualtiero Guadagni, John Chittley, Martin Gibb, Mary Jacobs, Pascal Desrosiers, Rick Hayward, Rod McBirnie, Shaun Carey, Susan Hannah, Tim Hill and Victor Schultheiss.  Thank you.

Also, what a legacy - vests for Boat Riders Becky's Babes crew donated by Bart Smit and Pascal Desrosiers.  Boat Riders are now clearly visible on and off the water with the vests and green arm bands.

Thank you and much appreciated.

  Many Thanks and
  Yard Maintenance and Cleanup

Thanks to the Rail Yard Crews

We have had another hard working and successful haul out weekend and I would like to send some thanks to all involved in the rail yard. This includes the tallow crew who kept things slippery, the cradle crew who did the heavy lifting, the winch operators who kept boats moving, and the folks who repaired ways and cradles as needed throughout the days. To the rail communications team that precisely positioned the rail car, the boat handlers at the mast crane, the dock ladies and tow boat crews, many thanks. To the rope pullers one and all, thank you for your tireless efforts, patience, and camaraderie and, to the rope pulling commander, I hope your voice returns quickly.

To the many people who had a kind and encouraging word of support throughout the weekend, many, many thanks.

Yard Maintenance and General Cleanup

I would like to thank all those members who came to build the new way near the red dock patio. With
haul out over, we still have some clean up work to do so I call upon you to come and join me this Saturday in dismantling the old ways so the club can have a roadway between the club and Casa Ballman.

Please post your work hours to:
Project = Yard Maintenance
Job = Yard Maintenance - Water Main Repair Site Prep and Restore

There are other tasks in the yard that need to be done. These include:
Collect and store unused butter boards, discard any that are damaged.
Collect unused lumber and store according to size, and again discard anything that is damaged.
Note: short 6X6 blocks should be stacked in a separate pile.

Please post your work hours to:
Project = Yard Clean Up
Job = Yard Maintenance and General Cleanup

Thanks again

Fall 2015 Haul Out Thanks

I'd like to extend a big thank you to all participants in this fall's haul out, especially for all your care ensuring the operation proceeded safely and smoothly. A special thank you goes to all the volunteers who spend countless hours planning the event and who also work extremely hard during the actual event. The fall haul out is an inherently risky undertaking and it should not be taken for granted that accidents will not happen. The fact that no serious accident has occurred to date reflects well on the care and due diligence exercised by participants.

Again, a big thank you to all for your participation and for making the 'Fall 2015 Haul Out' a safe event!

Travel Lift Proposal, Looking Forward

The purpose of this note is to inform the membership about our plan for moving this proposal forward and potentially to present the proposal to the membership for approval at the January 2016 General Meeting.

A reconnaissance trip to Port Credit Yacht Club (PCYC) to view that club's boat handling operations, which are practically identical to our proposed plan, will be arranged for Tuesday, October 27 or Wednesday, October 28, for interested members. If interested, please email me and state your date preference at [email protected]

For members who do not have an opportunity to visit PCYC on a weekday, I can arrange a trip to the nearby Outer Harbour Marina (OHM) Saturday, October 24. OHM's operation is virtually identical to that of PCYC. For other interested members who are unable to participate in the proposed field trips, the travel lift operation at PCYC will be videotaped and posted on the Club's website.

The third Town Hall meeting regarding the travel lift proposal will be held at our Club House on Thursday, November 19 at 7 pm. The agenda for the meeting is:
  1. Repeat updated version of the original PP presentation
  2. Haul out basin location update
  3. Viewing videotaped haul out operation at PCYC
  4. Review yard layout when boats are placed by hydraulic trailer
  5. Discussion and questions
We look forward to active participation by as many members as possible in the decision making process regarding this most important Club initiative.

Water Main & Sewer Project Status Update

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members for their cooperation and understanding with respect to the construction work installing new water and sewer pipes on Club property. Unfortunately, due to a late start by our contractor, Wyndale Paving, project completion ended up overlapping with preparation for haul out, causing considerable inconvenience to members. For this I apologize on behalf of your Board.

Except for some restoration work, including landscaping, paving and removal of the spoil piles, the work is completed. The remaining work will be completed as soon as possible.

Yes, that's right, no need to mope around the house on Saturdays feeling lost and not sure what to do. Next week, we will be publishing a list of jobs that include outdoor and indoor work, something for everyone. Now you can rest.

Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

Update: Race 2 - Day 12

376 NM to Cape Town - Stormhoek Race to the Cape of Storms

As of this morning (Tuesday), Clippertelemed+ is only 376 NM from Cape Town still sitting in 4th place. The finish placing could change with the elapsed time positioning of LMAX Exchange and Qingdao.  Time will tell.

Once again there have been adventures on Clippertelemed+. On October 27 they entered the Ocean Sprint with four other boats but not too long into the sprint they suspended racing and engaged the motor while recovering a crew member who is uninjured. He had been attempting to fix a broken halyard strop (a fitting that is required to keep constant tension in the luff of sails such as asymmetrical spinnakers and code zeros) and lost his grip of the mast. He was tethered to the rig and was reported to be OK apart from scratches and minor impacts.

They consulted the PRAXES Medical operations center in Halifax and clarified that the on board medical assessment had be thorough in ruling out any major injury. They re-entered the race at the position they had been in when they suspended racing and were in 5th place.

This week has been a combination of lots of wind 25 - 35 knots gusting to 50 and high seas. Then there were light winds with high seas, light seas. You know how it goes.

Monday morning three boats went into stealth mode but it backfired on them as they came out of stealth mode only to find the other boats were right there with them. While they were experiencing very light winds, the rest of the fleet had more wind.

LMAX Exchange and Qingdao are now in the Ocean Sprint and generally are experiencing lighter winds.

This morning the Clipper Race Committee finalized the list of penalty points to be given to the teams following the assessment of damages and repairs that were needed after the fleet's race from London to Rio. These penalty points are awarded for damage incurred while the boats are racing. They do not affect podium positions but they could make a difference to the overall race standings.

The Clipper Race Committee's normal method of penalizing a yacht for an infringement of the race rules, or for being found guilty after a protest, is for a time or points penalty to be added to the results of that race. They also apply it to sail and equipment damage.

The Clipper Race Committee keeps a running total of the costs of lost and damaged equipment and will impose one penalty point to the relevant team when the running total reaches 500 British pounds and an additional penalty point for every subsequent 500 pounds. A list of typical examples are:
  • Loss of winch handles.
  • Loss of any running rigging, snatch blocks or handy billy (a double & single block with line - its obvious use is to gain mechanical advantage when lifting heavy objects and can also be used to take the strain off another line).
  • Serious damage to equipment including winch drums and sewing machines.
Two penalty points were given to Garmin, Qingdao, and Unicef.
One penalty point was given to IchorCoal, PSP Logistics, LMAX Exchange, and Great Britain.

With only 376 NM to Cape Town, Diane and Clippertelemed+ should cross the finish line for this race some time tomorrow, making it two weeks of heavy racing with lots of wind and seas. I'm sure they will be looking at some time to rest up for the next leg which should be more of the same.

Leg 3 is scheduled to start on October 31, with the estimated arrival window in Albany, Australia between November 22 and 26.

You can follow the race here at clipperroundtheworld.com.

There will be trackers on board, a virtual race, and of course tons of media stuff coming back from the boats for you to keep up on everything.

Toonie Thursdays

Toonie Thursdays Kick Off on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 7 PM

Lisa Turnbull, Senior Manager of Project Management Services with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) will kick off our Toonie Thursday Season for 2015/2016. Lisa has been working closely with our Commodore, Bob Hedley, on several ABYC related projects. Most of our members are probably not aware that TRCA owns and manages over 43,000 acres of watershed land in the GTA. One of its key urban sites is Tommy Thompson Park and the Leslie Street Spit. Another of their properties is the land that ABYC sits on.

At the General Meeting in September there was a brief discussion on the plans by the City and TRCA to reconfigure the Harbour Entrance of Ashbridges Bay and Coatsworth Cut in order to mitigate the risk to navigation due to sediment erosion.

The City and TRCA have now completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) and are now moving toward the development of a detailed design for the new Ashbridges Bay Landform. Lisa will overview the results of the EA and discuss the process associated with the design of the Landform. She will also review the predicted timelines for the phasing of construction.

This is an opportunity for members to learn more about this project and how it will impact ABYC in the future.
