That Sinking Feeling

As you all know from the recent Ship2Shore Extra, the water main just outside of the gate caused another water access issue at the club this weekend. The Thanksgiving Brunch was missed however we offer our thanks to everyone who worked hard to get the inside water main sorted for haulout!

Haulout

This Weekend Is Haulout

The general schedule for Haul Out is for the two cranes to be working on Friday and Saturday, and the railway on Saturday and Sunday.

Cranes
Crane start is 0800 Friday and Saturday, with the large crane only starting at 0900 on the Friday. John Moody has assigned roles for everyone so please ensure that you arrive, sign in and are ready for first boat well BEFORE those times. No vehicles will be allowed on the property either day.

Note that the large crane will be coming in for setup on Thursday so all vehicles should be out of the main parking area, and the incoming roadway, by early afternoon on Thursday. Once the crane is in place and the service trucks are gone, we will open up the yard for access for the remainder of Thursday if time permits.

I will be advising the first four boats each day that they are up first.

Cradles
All cradles are laid in the yard roughly where they will be receiving your yachts. A layout is posted in the club house showing your wintering spot (labelled with a Blue reference, eg P12). If your cradle is not there, look on the secondary sheet for the same reference but in Green. To keep it simple, if your cradle is not at your wintering spot, it is likely in the crowded staging area by Bay Belle point.

Check your cradles, and assemble all that needs to be assembled will before haulout. This is NOT something you should be doing on the day of. Haulout is exciting enough without the fun of plunking boats into incomplete cradles. Check your pads as well, and please oil the threaded adjustment nuts.  Keep in mind that we are budgeting one boat every ten minutes; time consumed beyond that costs the club money.

IF YOU CANNOT FIND YOUR CRADLE, LET ROY KNOW IMMEDIATELY.
ROY.LITTLE@BELL.NET OR 416 702-7014, SO THAT THIS CAN BE RESOLVED.

Haulout - Trailers

Dear Members

All of the trailers have been moved from the rail area to either Bay Belle or the yard. Could you please make sure that your Boat Name, your Name, and your Member Number are clearly marked to make it easier come haulout.

We are  still waiting for the contractor to fill in the hole at the gate. The water main has been fixed so the building now has water and has re-opened. We appreciate your patience while this has been ongoing. The gate however will still be a problem until after haulout. We have no in ground sensors at the moment so the gate will not automatically open or stay open because a car is present. Because of this, we must lock the gate at 6:00 pm which means that we would appreciate that unless you wish to keep your car in the yard overnight that it be removed by 5:45 pm every day.

Tallow Crew Needs One More Volunteer

Haulout is our busiest time of the year and I would appreciate it if we could have another volunteer to help with the tallow by joining our merry group. If you were thinking of trying out and not sure what to do, now is an excellent time to learn.

No experience is required and we do not discriminate against gender. Yes guys, this means you can help as well. We'd be happy to show you the "ropes." Just come wearing old clothes and shoes and we will supply the fashionable white overalls and gloves. Think of it as an extra layer of clothing on a cold rainy day.

We would love to have you, so please let me know if you are interested.

Boat Riders Are Ready

Our team of boat riders are ready to assist boat owners and boats from your assigned dock to your assigned small or large crane area. Please have your boat ready with lines and the deck cleared - this is a safety issue ... SAFETY SAFETY!!!

When your name and boat is called, if needed, please request your boat rider prior to walking toward your boat. Once your boat is safely delivered to the crane area, the boat rider will return to his/her assigned location for the next assignment.

NOTE:  BOAT RIDERS ARE WEARING GREEN ARM BANDS

 Dock Lady Volunteers Needed
 Last Call!

Dock Ladies Team Is Recruiting

Would you be willing to be on the Dock Lady crew for Haulout?  We need a few more volunteers for Friday, October 16 and Saturday, Oct. 17!

The Dock Lady team ensures that the right boat is at the right haulout point at precisely the right moment. Too soon, and the harbour gets clogged with traffic and the skippers are away from their work assignments for an unnecessary period of time. Too late, and the crews and the cranes are left waiting, wasting both money and resources.

We are a friendly bunch, who are a crucial part of the haulout operation. Come join us!

I'd love to have you on the team. Please let me know if you are available and willing to help "on the docks" this coming weekend.

Anyone interested in joining our team, please contact me at ABYCDockLadies@gmail.com for additional details. No technical skills are needed, just enthusiasm!

  Fall Work Party

I would like to thank all those members who came down to rebuild the ways in the rail yard. With many hands, the work went smoothly and the results will allow the haulout to proceed.

Please post your work hours to:

Project=Yard Maintenance Job=Yard Maintenance - Water Main Repair Site Prep and Restore

As soon as the area is clear east of the club house, we need to build one more way.

If you have any questions, please contact me at bruce_morrison@rogers.com.

Thank you.

WANTED: 2015 Cruising Photographs

The ABYC Cruising Committee is looking for photos taken by members during their cruising activities in 2015 (Sail Past to Haulout). This request is not limited to photos taken during ABYC Club Cruises or limited to cruising on Lake Ontario. We will create a slide show using the photos submitted to be shown during the Cruising Awards Night on Friday, November 13, 2015.

Please forward your photos to the Cruising Captains: cruising@abyc.on.ca by November 1, 2015 (the earlier the better). If you have more than a 'few' photos to share, we ask that you put your photos on a DVD or USB Flash Drive and leave (labelled) in the office. We will download your photos and return the device to you. The more photos we get the better our slide show will be. Help make this the best slide show ever!

It was a real delight to see the Optis and Lasers training over the long weekend, when many of us were comfortably nibbling on Thanksgiving fare. Well done!
Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

Update: Race 2 - Day 6

1377 NM down and 2010 NM to go to Cape town and Clippertelemed+ sitting in 4th place this morning, 49 NM behind the leader.

The second race started at 1400 (Toronto Time) On October 7th with 10 of the fleet on the line. Clippertelemed+ was 3rd across the line but problems occurred quite quickly. Three of their battens broke, a reef line snapped and the stern gland was chucking water, but they managed to get it under control. They are continuing to experience water in the engine room. They had lots of wind and waves and lots of crew were sick, including their skipper. They were sailing in 40 knots of wind and high seas but as of Saturday, October 10, the "vomit comet" as they were referring to themselves, had subsided and they were into smoother, steadier seas and winds. They are anticipating that the winds will begin to increase over the next couple of days.

They have decided not to go for the scoring gate but instead to stay with the majority of the pack and continue on the course. Their course will take them a longer distance but it appears to be in steady winds. Diane says that this course has steadier winds and seas and will be a little more comfortable.

Again on this race they are being attacked by the flying fish. On the first race this was a common occurrence, with the flying fish hitting the crew members and landing on deck. It would appear that once again they are being followed by these same flying fish who have now attacked one of the new crew that boarded in Rio. Welcome aboard.

Shortly after the start, PSP Logistics returned to Rio for repairs as they had problems. They had damaged/broken three stanchions forward and a broken running back-stay. They were able to return later to the race on October 8.

LMAX Exchange and Qingdao were re-launched and started at 0430 (Toronto Time) on Sunday, October 11, using a Le mans Start as a standard race start could not be accomplished. These two boats are match racing and they will be placed based on elapsed time against the rest of the fleet.

You can follow the race here at clipperroundtheworld.com.

There will be trackers on board, a virtual race, and of course tons of media stuff coming back from the boats for you to keep up on everything.
