Archie Walker Race

I thank the race committee for their decision not to run the Archie Walker. There is a grey area between the black and white of tradition and sensible safety. If you walked to the far point on Saturday, the conditions were far more apparent.

There are many examples of the line being crossed in the world. I look at it as "Can you perform man overboard recovery safely in these conditions". Just my two cents...

Fall Work Party

As everyone must be aware of by now, the water main repair has made a mess of the rail yard. With that in mind, I would like a crew to come this Saturday, October 10 to begin the repair work on the ways.

Please bring your hammer with you.

If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected].

Thank you.

Belle Point Tent Storing - Rescheduled

A Call for Volunteers, needed this Saturday, October 10, 2015, to help take down the large tent on Belle Point. This will require 6-8 people to complete.

Hopefully, if enough members show up to help, we can start by 11:00 am.

Time on this project will count toward club hours. Also, a thank you to all who showed up last Saturday. Because of the high winds, the job had to be cancelled.

Thank you.

WANTED: 2015 Cruising Photographs

The ABYC Cruising Committee is looking for photos taken by members during their cruising activities in 2015 (Sail Past to Haul Out). This request is not limited to photos taken during ABYC Club Cruises or limited to cruising on Lake Ontario. We will create a slide show using the photos submitted to be shown during the Cruising Awards Night on Friday, November 13, 2015.

Please forward your photos to the Cruising Captains: [email protected] by November 1, 2015 (the earlier the better). If you have more than a 'few' photos to share, we ask that you put your photos on a DVD or USB Flash Drive and leave (labelled) in the office. We will download your photos and return the device to you. The more photos we get the better our slide show will be. Help make this the best slide show ever!

Archie Walker Race

With the weather forecast of Easterlies ending the week and going into the weekend, the Race Committee was ready with an amendment to start and finish between our fixed marks and a flag ashore on the parkland South of our harbour, if it were too rough to be at anchor.

The actuals on Saturday morning were every bit what was predicted, and more. At 1100h, the Ajax buoy reported winds at 29kn gusting to 37, and wave heights of 2.7m. Grimsby had the same wind, and waves to 3.8m by 1500h. The waves near our harbour mouth were very impressive ... so impressive that some wondered if their keel would hit bottom if they hit a shallower spot when in a trough.

When we added a 10C water temperature, we chose to err on the side of caution, and cancel the race this year. There did not seem to be many disappointed racers. Unfortunately, we've run out of weekends, so it won't be rescheduled.

I'd like to thank the Race Committee who all showed up and were ready to head out with me, or camp on the rocks for the afternoon, if we had run the event:  Max Smith, Noreen Crompton-Stumpf, and Helen Phillips.

ABYC to host 2016 Canadian Optimist Championship

The Canadian Optimist Dinghy Association has accepted ABYC's proposal to host the 2016 Optimist Canadian Championships, which will run from August 20-26. This is the top Opti event in Canada, attracting sailors from multiple countries as well as across Canada. It's a great opportunity for the Club to showcase our site, and will bring 125 plus Optimist sailors, parents, and coaches. We can expect top notch sailing and coaching from this class.

Unlike a typical keelboat regatta, this event is more intensive in terms of shore support and regatta management. There will be lots of opportunities for volunteers, both before and during the event. If you are interested, please contact volunteer coordinators:

Paul Brennan at [email protected]
Jeff Dejean at [email protected]

They will help you to get set up with Regatta Chair Laura Goddard.

Help is needed on the water during the event, on shore during the event, and prior to the event, with marketing, sponsorship, website, and many other roles.

Our sailors are already prepping for the event; Danny Assimakopoulos (shown in photo) was out with 15 other ABYC Opti Team members training in the surf this past Sunday.

With your help,
we can make this a great event!

Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

Update: Rio Finish

There has been a lot of interesting information coming from the Clipper Round the World Race. It was decided by the Race office to shorten the race as the winds had dramatically lightened, which was jeopardizing the finish of the boats, so at midnight on September 30 the finish was taken. At that time, Diane and Clippertelemed+ were approximately 25 miles from the finish line. They got to power the rest of the way into Rio and Marina da Gloria, and were the 6th boat to finish but one boat Clipper IchorCoal's ended up 6th with redress.  On September 5, while making a sail shortening during the night, one of the crew was hit by the main sheet and/or the boom and died from his injuries. The team left the race and arrived at Porto Portugal and, on September 9 with the support of their friends and family and the brother of the crewman who died, they re-entered the race.

All the remaining boats were able to finish by Friday October 2.

On September 30 in the evening, while transiting to another marina to be lifted for the application of new hull graphics, LMAX Exchange ran aground on a sandy outcrop approximately 42 miles southwest of Marina da Gloria and was beached with no injuries. The starboard rudder will require replacing and there appeared to be no damage to the hull.

On Friday, October 2, they had received the permits from all of the local authorities and equipment had been organized to re-float LMAX Exchange. On Friday evening, Diane and Clippertelemed+ were on their way to the area transporting members of the Race Office. Overnight, while assisting the operation, Clipper Qingdao suffered a prop wrap when a line was caught by the propeller. The boat drifted without an engine and was washed onto the sand but was subsequently re-floated. LMAX Exchange was re-floated on Sunday and towed to the same marina. Both boats are currently at the marina undergoing repairs.

As it is estimated that repairs on these two clippers will take approximately 7 days, the Race office has decided that Leg 2 to Cape Town will start as scheduled on Wednesday at 2pm Toronto time with 10 boats on the start line. LMAX Exchange and Qingdao are expected to start 4 days later on October 11 and will match race across the ocean.

What appeared to be a simple transport to another marina to have some new graphics applied to LMAX Exchange has obviously turned into a very costly expense for the race organizers.

When you are reading this, the 2nd leg will have started with the boats on their way to Cape Town, South Africa, a distance of approximately 3500 NM.

You can follow the race here at clipperroundtheworld.com.

There will be trackers on board, a virtual race, and of course tons of media stuff coming back from the boats for you to keep up on everything.
