Lake Ontario - sometimes it's a lake, and other times it's a sea. For Saturday's race, it was the latter, and it was great race!

Above is a plot of our course on Chris Hannah's Lion's Den. Thanks to Chip Campbell for the GPS recording and map plot.

Next is the Archie Walker to round off the season.

Awards & Trophies

The process for selecting the winners of the Ashbridge & Stapleton Awards requires that anyone with any non-local sailing results (beyond club, LORC, LOSHRS, and LYRA) that they wish to have considered must email them to the Rear Commodore for consideration. and that September 30 is the published deadline in our Events Book.

As this reminder is published on September 30, and that the 30th is the published deadline in our Events Book, I'll extend the deadline to the end of this weekend; Sunday, October 4. Please email results to rearcom@abyc.on.ca.

Our awards coordinator, Joanne Wright, will be organizing trophies very soon.

Haulout weekend is the absolute deadline for returning trophies, and it would be better to get them in one of the next two weekends, as we all know how busy the club is on Haulout weekend.

Dock Ladies Team Is Recruiting

It seems that despite my best effort in foot stomping there's no denying the inevitable... Haulout 2015 is soon to be upon us.

Time to recruit members for the Haulout "Dock Lady" crew!

The Dock Lady team is one part of a large and detailed Haulout operation. This team performs a crucial task of liaising with the skippers to ensure that the right boat is at the right haulout point at precisely the right moment. Too soon, and the harbour gets clogged with traffic and the skippers are away from their work assignments for an unnecessary period of time, jeopardizing the continued safety and efficiency of the operation. Too late, and the crews and the cranes are left waiting, wasting both money and resources.

Would you be willing to be on the Dock Lady crew for Haulout? I'd love to have you on the team. Please let me know if you are available and willing to help "on the docks" this Fall.

No offence to the gents but this team has traditionally been crewed by our women members as many of the men are assigned to the heavily physical tasks...hence the name "Dock Lady". However if you find yourself unable to contribute in either the crane or rail yard, we'd love to have you join our team!

Anyone interested in joining our team, please contact me at ABYCDockLadies@gmail.com for additional details. No technical skills are needed, just enthusiasm!

Rail Yard Cradle Inspection Notice

I have done a review of the cradles in the rail yard prior to Haulout and some of the cradles need attention. In passed years, I have been lenient on cradle labeling but this year I want better identification marked on the cradles. Only a few need urgent repair work.

Belle Point Tent Storing

A Call for Volunteers - needed this Saturday, October 3, 2015 to help take down the large tent on Belle Point. This will require 6-8 people to complete.

Hopefully, if enough members show up to help, we can start by 11:00 am.

Time on this project will count toward club hours.

Thank you.

Joy Wolfe 1957-06-03 to 2015-09-15

Excerpts From Gerry Wolfe's Letter to ABYC (Full Letter Posted on Bulletin Board)

Joy and Gerry Wolfe were ABYC members from about 1990 to 2004, sailing a Contessa 26 (Penny Black) prior to moving to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island to be with Joy's relatives.

Joy was a "visible" person at the club; worked in the office, edited the Leashore, donuts at launch and haulout, and was always good with a line ("OK Gerry, time to fire up the Porsche"). Gerry was involved in a lot of administration - consolidated club bylaws and regulations, club secretary for many years, parliamentarian, and getting dirty on Irish Rose and the digger.

Up to the very end, Joy and I talked about the good times and good folks and jokes we had at the club.  Some of our fondest memories.

Cruising

Cruising Trophies and Distance Flags

How far did you go in the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River, while flying an ABYC burgee, from launch to fall Haulout 2015? Did you:
  • Make the longest cruise (Hans Ballman Trophy)?
  • Sail the greatest number of nautical miles (The Jack Shirt Trophy)?
  • In a sailboat under 29 feet LOA accumulate the greatest number of miles cruising (Ed Wilson Trophy)?
  • Enter the greatest number of harbours (Ports of Call Trophy)?
Submit your 2015 mileage, longest cruise, and number of harbours visited to the Cruising Captains cruising@abyc.on.ca no later than October 6, 2015 (deadline extended). The Cruising Committee will be meeting next week and will review member submissions.

If you did not qualify for any of the above accomplishments, you may still qualify for a Distance Flag (250, 500, or 1000 miles flag).

For further details on qualification for cruising trophies and flags, please visit the ABYC 2015 Events Book pages 46 & 47 - 2015 ABYC Events Book.

Trophies and flags will be presented at our 2015 Cruising Awards Night on November 13.

Donald D. Summerville Memorial Race

On Saturday morning, your intrepid Race Committee left the dock to start this long distance race, which is part of the ABYC Offshore Series, the LORC Offshore Series, and the Toronto East Long Distance Series (TELDS).

What a beautiful warm, sunny Fall day! However, with an E/NE wind for the third day in a row, it was a bit lumpy out. 26 competitors ranging from a J24 to a Beneteau First 40 were out for the fun.

It was less than half an hour on the Sarah before things got exciting. The first fishes were fed at approximately 10:50 am, just before the first Warning signal. Only a few minutes later, it was discovered that Sarah herself wasn't feeling well, and a pint of hydraulic steering fluid had blown out of the helm and was coating the cabin sole.

By the time the fourth starting group was underway, the fishes had been fed three more times, and a second crew member was not feeling well.

It seems that the uphill slog was more fun than some of the smaller boats thought was necessary... we received retirement calls from three boats in the first 15 minutes. At least one crew was later seen at the Margaritaville party at Red Dock Patio, which was perhaps a nicer way to spend the afternoon.   Drinking concoctions from a blender is much nicer than being in the blender!

Once the starters were out of the way, the Jack Cameron came out to help keep Sarah pointed in the right direction as we weighed anchor and headed back to harbour. While up on the foredeck, it was noticed that the seal on the windlass had also chosen Saturday to blow. A lengthy discussion ensued as to which was the most slippery; hydraulic fluid on plywood or gear oil on steel.

Once back on shore (I don't think anyone kissed the ground, but I can't say for sure), we assembled a flag and pole, and clipboards, and set up the finish line out on the rocks closest to Mark 7. (This was part of careful planning ahead. We'd seen the forecast and didn't want any of our people sitting at anchor for a prolonged period in those waves.)  The first boat (Lion's Den) finished in 3h42m30s. The last was on the course for 6h27m00s.

Congratulations to the top ABYC skippers in their divisions:  Jim McGuinness, Michael Flynn, Graham Toms, Wendy Loat, Sam Robbins, and Shaun Carey.

Thanks to all the crew

Starting Team:
  • Tom Shenstone (Race Chair)
  • Melissa Mayhew
  • Helen Phillips
  • Noreen Crompton-Stumpf
  • Paul Brennan

Tow Boat:
  • Tim Hill
  • Rod McBirnie

Finish Team:
  • Helen & Noreen

And thanks to Sarah, who has given us great service this summer, working harder than in many years; she's due for a winter vacation!

Regatta Report by Hunter Dejean

This weekend five ABYC sailors, including myself, represented ABYC at the National 1D Cup in Bronte. The five sailors were Mike Hren, Chris Reil, Bob Wilson, Jeff Dejean, and Hunter Dejean. Overall, six very
competitive boats raced the regatta. The event had a requirement that one junior sailor from each club be on board. As a result, eight junior sailors got to enjoy a great weekend on the water.

On Friday ABYC, together with other clubs, came out to practice before the regatta and to learn the boat. Our team had a great day on the water, reaching great speeds planing downwind, and we were ready for competition!

The first day of the regatta was a great day for ABYC with 15 knot Easterly winds and giant waves, which made for some interesting downwinds. We had some really fast planing runs in the Flying Tiger 7.5 sportboats, carrying the big asymmetrical kite. Our team sailed really well with two bullets and two seconds in five races.

On the second day, we had some bad luck in shifty conditions in race one and our results were just a few points from first place overall, leaving us finishing third. Mike, our skipper, did a great job driving the boat in the light conditions. Our three crew members, Bob, Chris, and Jeff, also sailed really well. To conclude, I really enjoyed sailing with these guys and learned a lot and I'm sure they will win the event next year.

Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

Update: Day 29 - 135 NM to Rio

As of this morning (Tuesday, September 29) Clippertelemed+ will be only 135 NM to the finish. As I am writing this Diane and Clippertelemed+ are in 6th place and should finish sometime today or early tomorrow.

On Sunday, they put their boat into Stealth Mode. Stealth Mode is a tactical card, which each team can use to hide their position from the rest of the fleet, and the race viewer for a period of 24 hours (or in some cases 48 hours). The Race Office team still tracks the team's position every hour but their position is not displayed on the Race Viewer or sent to the fleet for the designated time. Teams automatically leave Stealth Mode once they are under 250 nautical miles from the finish line. When Clippertelemed+ went into Stealth Mode, they had a three mile advantage on Visit Seattle. When their boat exited Stealth Mode, Clippertelemed+ was now 35 NM ahead.

Unfortunately, the boats are now trying to make their way around the oil platforms that dot the coast and the winds are extremely light, which will make the finish for these two boats probably very close.

Once they reach Rio, they will have approximately 10 days to make repairs, do maintenance, provisions, and hopefully have some down time and time to be tourists and see the sights.

The next leg to South Africa will start on October 7, at which time I will once again update the members reading this.

You can follow the race here at clipperroundtheworld.com.

There will be trackers on board, a virtual race, and of course tons of media stuff coming back from the boats for you to keep up on everything.

Entertainment Committee Looking For A Few Good Party Throwers

The Entertainment Committee has a solid core of terrific volunteers that look after organizing and running the events that the club throws throughout the year but we are looking to add a few new recruits to help out. It's a good way to get involved with the club and a great way to get to know people. Whether you are interested in taking charge of an event or just looking to assist, we would be happy to hear from you.

If you feel like joining or even just learning more about how things work, please contact:

We will be scheduling a meeting of the Entertainment Committee in the next couple of weeks to discuss the schedule of events for 2015-2016 and all are welcome to attend.
