Shellbacks and Pollywogs

As I watch the Clipper Around the World Race go into the doldrums, there is a ritual going on onboard.
Many years ago, I became a Shellback by crossing the equator in the Indian ocean. The rights of passage by King Neptune bestowed on Pollywogs is an event no sailor forgets.

Coming Soon:  Additional Boat in the Co-op Fleet

With a full co-op program and a solid waiting list for the last few years, the membership approved the purchase of a third boat for the fleet last night.

Emily Sawolak, the program coordinator, will be leading the search for a new vessel starting immediately.

We will be looking at boats that are:
  • 24-29 feet in length
  • Roomy enough for 4-6 in cockpit
  • Easily sailed by 2 people
  • Less than 5' draft
  • Powered by an outboard, or an inboard diesel
If you have or know of a vessel that we should consider, please contact emily.sawolak@gmail.com

Thank you!

Keel Boat Training Course Graduates

Next Steps

At ABYC, we have a comprehensive series of paths that new sailors can take toward becoming a Senior Member. One of those paths starts with the keel boat training course that is offered in partnership with the Humber Sailing School.

Upon 'graduation' from this course, it is critical that ABYC keep these new sailors moving onto the next steps toward Senior Membership and their engagement in the life-long sport of sailing. The Membership Committee is therefore seeking the support of all those in the racing community to take on one graduate as a junior member of their crew for the Archie Walker Race scheduled for Saturday, October 3. The goal is to pair 2015 graduates of the Keel Boat Course with a team that will be racing in the Archie Walker event.

We are currently soliciting interest from the graduate cohort. We will be advising them that bringing a beverage of choice and snacks is always a great step. We will be reaching out to all racing skippers to ask their support to take one of these folks aboard for the race.

As a racing skipper, your support in this initiative is requested.

Cruising

EYC Cruise

After being glued to the weather prediction sites on Thursday and much of Friday, the cruise hosts and Cruising Captains unfortunately had to cancel the Saturday sail plans to Etobicoke Yacht Club when EYC pulled the plug on their reciprocal cruise to ABYC. THANK YOU to all for your patience with the uncertainty over the last club cruise of 2015, and for coming out in full force on Saturday evening to party at ABYC!  An energetic front passed through just in time for us to set up and start the festivities with 53 adults plus kids at Bay Belle Point. The beautiful lighting, sunset colours, and cool weather at the Point made for a simply gorgeous backdrop.

The cruisers were treated to a 'Taste of the Balkans' meal with a combined Greek and Bosnian/Serbian focus. Everyone enjoyed the member-contributed appies, while Roger and Jamie grilled vast numbers of souvlaki and ćevapi to serve with pita and the fixin's.  Homemade rice pilaf, Greek salad, and maroulosalata rounded out full plates for the happy eaters. We finished off with ouzo toasts and baklava, plus ample delicious dessert contributions by participating club cruisers. As the evening cooled, the music turned up, with dancing and much lively conversation late into the evening.

Thank you all for making the unexpected cruise-in-place a great evening in our own wonderful ABYC backyard.

Club Cruising Update

We end our 2015 club cruising schedule this weekend at Etobicoke YC but that will not be the end of our communication with ABYC members!

2015 Club Cruising Awards - Friday, November 13
More details will be provided after haul-out.

Cruising Trophies and Awards
Anyone wishing to nominate a member for a 'Cruising Discretionary Award', and/or has met the requirements for a 'Cruising Trophy', must submit the details in writing to the Cruising Captains (cruising@abyc.on.ca) by September 30.

Distance Flags

Members who maintain a 'Sail Log' can apply for distance flags. This is not limited to attendance at club cruises but includes 'mileage' for all sailing / cruising trips (except racing) including day sails and long distance sailing:
  • 250 mile flag (New 2015)
  • 500 mile flag
  • 1000 mile flag
Members must submit mileage information to the Cruising Captains (cruising@abyc.on.ca) no later than September 30.

When submitting mileage information, members are requested to include additional data that may qualify them for a trophy:
  • Total number of nautical miles in the season.
  • Total number of nautical miles of the longest cruise.
  • Total number of ports visited.
For information on cruising trophies, awards, and distance flags, please refer to pages 46 & 47 of the 2015 ABYC Events Book.

J24 Canadian Championship Regatta

Wow...that was a tough one.

A practice race on Thursday evening, followed by three full days of racing, two of them in brutal conditions, ended with nine races. With the Sarah refusing to turn into the wind and getting hit broadside with BIG waves, we were a pretty bruised and battered bunch. But the job got done, thanks to the hard work by everyone involved:

RO: Paul Brennan
Committee Boat: Rebecca Crumlish, Brian Chapman, Eleanor MacKay, Mary Jacobs, Helen Phillips (NYC)
Pin/Mark Boats: Paul Clissold (PCYC), Tim Hill, Rick Hayward, Stuart Gibbons, Neil Payne, Yves Tremblay

Bravo/Zulu was flying as we returned to the dock and deservedly so. Terrific job, guys.

The last two events of the season

Saturday, September 26  -  Summerville Memorial Race
I desperately need an RO for the finish and a timer.

Saturday, October 3  -  Archie Walker Race
I need an RO and crew for this one.

Please let me know ASAP if you can help.

ABYC Racers Turn in Strong Finishes at Fall CORK

Last weekend several of ABYC's race teams competed in the Fall CORK regatta. The event had a great turn out this year with over 100 boats competing in seven different fleets. Sailors represented ABYC in the Laser, 49er FX, and Optimist fleets. On the first day of the Regatta, the conditions were fantastic with 15-20 knots of wind. The race committee got three good races off before sending us in. We weren't so lucky on the second day with shifty conditions and not much wind. Only the Laser full rig class was able to get a race off before the race committee called it a regatta and sent us in.

After the two days, ABYC had some fantastic finishes and overall accomplishments. Our top three boats from the Laser Radial fleet were Clara Gravely who finished in 26th, Zoe Sherar who finished 18th, and ABYC Corinthian athlete and Canadian National Team Member, Sarah Douglas, who finished 1st. Way to go Sarah!

We also had representation from Ian Doell, Connor Bowman, and Rowland Goddard, who attended the regatta and had great finishes such as 26th and 34th. Next in the full rig laser class we had one ABYC boat, Matthew Sherar, who did great sailing with three bullets out of three races on the Saturday.

In the 49er FX fleet we only had one boat who had skipper (ABYC Coach) Linor Berezin and her crew David Kagan. After the one day of racing, they finished tied for third. Finally in our Optimist fleet, our top three boats were Kate Evans who finished in 21st, Martin Staadecker who finished 17th, and Hunter Dejean who finished 4th. Sailors such as Oliver van Rossem and Davis Dejean also competed in the Regatta and sailed well in the breeze. This fall, ABYC race teams are excited to train in some wind and get on the water!

Cornish Hen Regatta Report

Two weeks ago, the ABYC junior and senior race team participated in the Cornish Hen at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club. This was a two-day regatta in some very challenging winds! The Opti race team of eight was hungry for some breeze after almost a week of camping out in windless, rainy Squamish. This unstoppable team was made up of eight young Opti sailors ranging from ages 10-14.

The first day of racing was a day of high winds and even bigger gusts. The biggest gust even reached a peak of 30 knots. Unfortunately, this great wind was topped off by a cold rain and generally bad weather. Although it was a tough and tiring day of sailing, ABYC sailed hard. After the first day of four races, we filled two of the top three spots, with Oliver Van Rossem in 2nd and Kate Evans in 3rd.

Sunday was a windy but slightly calmer day that was complemented by ongoing rain from Saturday. All bundled up, ABYC came to finish what we had started. Going hard for five straight races (making a total of nine), we ended strong. Due to her drop race and some good results in the first part of Sunday, Hunter Dejean moved into 2nd. Following her, and keeping his top three spot, in 3rd was Oliver. A few spots down, Annabel Gravely moved up several spots as well, after her first bullet (1st place), into sixth place. In seventh came Kate Evans, making a total of four racers from ABYC in the top 10! Even our younger racers fared well. Wyatt Small, Emily Van Rossem, Davis Dejean, and Amy Glennie had a solid weekend and did great with final results in the mid fleet. Overall, the Ashbridges Bay racing team was a force to be reckoned with!

In the Laser Radial Fleet Ian Doell hiked hard and, while he was one of the lightest boats on the course (and in first season racing Laser Radial), he came 4th of 20 boats, winning a race on the 2nd day. Clara Gravely continued her program of boat destruction, having ripped her mast step out at the ABYC Great Lakes regatta followed by snapping the top section of her mast and ripping her sail on the Saturday in the high winds. She was back on the water posting mid-fleet finishes on Sunday.

Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

Update: Day 22 - 1088 NM to Rio

As of today Clippertelemed+ will be passing out of the area of the Doldrums and heading to the equator and the area of the Ocean Sprint.

The Ocean Print is a time trial between two marks, which offers the quickest yacht an extra two race points. The leading yacht, LMC Exchange, made it through the area in 31 hours and 55 minutes so that is now the time to beat. The first yacht through is not necessarily the one to get the extra two points.

Clippertelemed+ motored when it was allowed in the doldrums. All boats could motor for a period of 60 hours between 12 degrees and 6 degrees. If they arrived at 6 degrees before the 60 hours, they had to wait at that position before moving on. Clippertelemed+ arrived 2 hours early and had to wait. During this time, they were able to check the boat over and each member was able to swim, one at a time, in the middle of the ocean.

Diane is now 1088 NM to Rio, whereas the leading boat is about 700 NM out of Rio.

You can follow the race here at clipperroundtheworld.com.

There will be trackers on board, a virtual race, and of course tons of media stuff coming back from the boats for you to keep up on everything.

Entertainment Committee Looking For A Few Good Party Throwers

The Entertainment Committee has a solid core of terrific volunteers that look after organizing and running the events that the club throws throughout the year but we are looking to add a few new recruits to help out. It's a good way to get involved with the club and a great way to get to know people. Whether you are interested in taking charge of an event or just looking to assist, we would be happy to hear from you.

If you feel like joining or even just learning more about how things work, please contact:

We will be scheduling a meeting of the Entertainment Committee in the next couple of weeks to discuss the schedule of events for 2015-2016 and all are welcome to attend.
