Volunteers Are the Life Blood of ABYC

We have enjoyed many years at ABYC, and have seen the many efforts of volunteers whose tireless endeavours have made ABYC such a great club. We salute those unsung heroes who step up, for all their hard work.

Merci beaucoup - thank you.

Race Committee Appreciation - At Long Last!

BBQ at ABYC Sunday, September 13

On Sunday, September 13, after the Vertigone/Minerve Championship Race, the racers came together to thank all those that supported the racing effort. Hopefully, this will be the first annual Racing Committee Appreciation event.

All mingled together over beer, wine, burgers, appetizers, and desserts provided by the racers. We had a few glitches. The Ship 2 Shore article said that the party would start at 5 pm. But strong winds meant that the race ended earlier than anticipated and hungry and thirsty racers and volunteers showed up around 4 pm, so we ran out of burgers (a sign that the event was well attended).

A large Thank You card was circulated, with the volunteer names listed on the left side and the racers' thanks on the right. The card was presented to Molly Asseltine, as a representative of the volunteers. We'll post this in the clubhouse over the month of October so that more names and thanks can be added, as not everyone could be there.

With more than 60 committed volunteers, we have one of the strongest Race Committees on the lake. These are the people that organize the races, lay the marks, track and record results on and off the water, judge our protests, and organize the crew bank, matching crew with racers on race nights. They donate their time evenings and weekends at races at ABYC and other clubs. They help to perpetuate ABYC's strong racing reputation.

A heartfelt thank you to all of the volunteers that have supported our racing this summer. Thanks to the racers that came to show their appreciation. And thanks to the staff that worked hard to refuel a hungry crowd.

We hope that this event becomes a tradition at ABYC. Let's start planning for next year so that we can avoid glitches and make it even more fun.

We welcome your feedback,

Hazel Wood, Paul Brennan, and Bart Smit

Elections, Robert's Rules, and Other Stuff

The September General Meeting is quickly approaching and our Nominating Committee, chaired by Petra Fischer, has been busy soliciting possible candidates for four of our board positions that come up for election.  The positions of Commodore, Senior Vice-Commodore, Vice-Commodore: Member Services, and Vice-Commodore: Planning are the centre of our attention for this year.

I am pleased to report that the Nominating Committee has been able to cover all four positions, however, the call for candidates for those positions have resulted in a single candidate for each. Over the past few years, members have given me feedback that, when the issue of a single candidate for a particular position arises, we find that the candidate does not have the opportunity to address the members present at the meeting so that they can hear and see for what they stand. Candidates are simply installed into their position and then asked to speak. To some, that seems to be the reverse of what should happen.

Robert's Rules of Order never refers to the word "acclamation".  Rather, it refers only to "election" to be held according to the by-laws of the various organizations. Our by-laws state that the definition of "election" is to vote by a show-of-hands or by a formal paper vote and not simply "acclamation".

To rectify this, the Board has approved a two-part procedure whereby the Nominating Committee Chairperson will invite all candidates, including incumbents, to address members for no more than three minutes and that a vote be taken in accordance with Robert's Rules of Order. In the case of a single candidate running for a particular position, the Chair will ask whether a show-of-hands would be appropriate and, if challenged by a member from the floor, a paper ballot will be used. With multiple candidates for a single position, the traditional paper ballot will be used. In short, all candidates will address the members followed by a vote.

Having said all of this and, as Past Commodore with elections in my portfolio, I invite any potential candidates for these four positions to continue to consider running in this election. Contact a member of the Nominating Committee. You may still be nominated from the floor. I believe that it is always better for our Club's future to have multiple candidates for our Board and, if you are considering getting involved in a position of responsibility sometime in the future, I would encourage you to contact members of the Board or the various Committee Chairs and put your name forward.

Second Town Hall Meeting on Travel Lift Proposal

I would like to thank all members who showed up and participated in the second Town Hall on travel lift proposal held last Monday. Following the presentation we received many excellent comments and good input from concerned members. All questions and comments were captured by Bob Brew, VC Planning, and the notes will be emailed directly to the members who participated directly in the discussion.

For the benefit of all Club Members, the entire Power Point presentation has been posted on the Club website in the members' area under "Committee Notes" (on top of the section). The referenced meeting notes will also be posted there.

I encourage all members to peruse the posted presentation as soon as possible in order to better inform themselves of the details of this important Club initiative. We are planning to arrange a third town hall on the subject later in the fall. At that time a potential yard layout with a travel lift operation will be presented and additional member input to the proposal will be sought.

Construction Work - Water Main & Sewer

The construction work on replacing the Club's aging water main and sewer will start Thursday or Friday this week. The work entails digging two ditches, at different times, and installing new pipes from the entrance gate to the Club House. The duration of the construction is expected to be approximately three (3) weeks.

The contractor, Wyndale Paving, has been instructed to carry out the work in a manner that will minimize impact on Club operations. However, some disruption must be expected from time to time and I'm requesting your patience and understanding when unavoidable disruption occurs.

Traffic in and out of Club premises will have to rerouted from time to time in order to facilitate the work. Please follow the posted signs. Some members tend to drive along the railway between the gate and the parking lot behind the Red Dock patio. This route will be closed during the construction period.

The Raccoons...

Several raccoons have have been sighted on Club grounds recently. Last week one was taken away by the City's animal control staff who believed it might have been rabid. On Monday a coon was sighted cavorting in the cockpit of a boat along Blue Wall.

As fall approaches, coons tend to become more active and will go to any length to find food to 'fatten up' and stake out winter shelter. Things to keep in mind as the sailing season winds down and haul-out time approaches:

  • The Club property is part of a large urban park complex with connections to the Leslie Street Spit and the City's numerous ravines - raccoons are here to stay, and therefore, we must learn to live with them.
  • Never approach a raccoon, it might be rabid.
  • If a raccoon approaches you, or appears to be sick, warn other people in the vicinity and report the incident to our office staff or the undersigned. Alternatively, contact the City's animal control at 311 directly.
  • After your boat has been hauled, an important part of the winterizing process is to "coon proof" it, making sure the rascals are prevented from taking up residence for the winter.

Boat Storage Deadline

At this point I am assuming that all boat haulout choices have been communicated to me or the ABYC office, and we are arranging the yard accordingly. If for some reason this is not the case, could you please let us know ASAP?

I WILL BE POSTING A LIST WHERE WE NORMALLY POST RACE RESULTS.  PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AND CONFIRM THAT YOUR BOAT IS APPROPRIATELY PLACED.  NO NEED TO COMMUNICATE IF ALL IS OK.

Of particular interest are:
  1. Owners of boats that did not haul/store with us last year and are coming back.
  2. Owners who stored with us last year but do not plan to do so this year.
  3. Members who have a different boat this year (unless you want us to try squeezing your new big boat into your old small cradle).
  4. Those who wish to store their boats in water as part of the InWater trial.
Owners who hauled/stored with us last year and plan to do so again this year do not need to inform the office.

If there are any questions, please feel free to contact me at roy.little@bell.net

QCYC Open Regatta / Vertigone-Minerve Challenge / Distance Races

QCYC Open Regatta
It was a wild and crazy weekend on the water and the Race Committee was right in the thick of it.
On Saturday, we were at QCYC, on Bravo course for their Open Regatta.  Being anchored on the Sarah Ashbridge in those conditions is never a picnic and the crew got all 3 races in and managed to get back to the dock in one piece. At least we didn't get rained on. Thanks very much to:

Paul Brennan (RO), Arlene Taylor, Helen Phillips, Allison Brennan, Martin Staadecker, and Pat Munroe.

Vertigone/Minerve Challenge Race
On Sunday, we had the Vertigone/Minerve Challenge Race in slightly more wind than most folks would prefer, but out we went.  Unfortunately, this crew did get the rain, as well as the rockin' and rollin' that is always such a treat on Sarah. Grateful thanks to:

Tom Shenstone (RO), Helen Phillips, Noreen Stumpf, Max Smith, Jim Allen and Rebecca Crumlish

Well done, everyone.

Distance Races
There are 2 more events left in the calendar that I need crews for -

Saturday, September 26  -  DONALD D. SUMMERVILLE MEMORIAL RACE
Saturday, October 3  -  ABYC ARCHIE WALKER RACE

Because these are both distance races, we will be starting them off and waiting 2 or 3 hours for them to finish. If you can help with either of these events, please let me know asap.

Finally, I would like to thank Hazel Wood and Bart Smit for organizing yesterday's RC Appreciation event. I was very happy to see my hard working crews receive the recognition  they deserve and I know that they were very touched by the gesture. It's gratifying to know that their efforts are appreciated.

Thank you.

Alas, the season is beginning to wind down. The Open Regatta series of LORC ended in Saturday's blustery weather, with the Queen City Open Regatta.

ABYC boats fared well (some better than others!), with Bart Smit and Pascal Desrosiers finishing second in the J80 division. Starwatch, capably sailed by the Flynn family and friends also managed a second place finish in the IRC 2 division with Paul Angus Bark's Crime Scene finishing 4th.

James Bond placed second in the PHRF Spinnaker Division aboard Blythe Spirit. In the No Flying Sails Division, Michael Clayton finished fifth aboard The Bad Dog.

Next up are the Skippers' Plan J24 Canadian Championships hosted by ABYC starting Thursday with the practice race. Eriks Kalvins of Black Pearl has been working hard with Race Officer and Rear Commodore (and well known glutton for punishment) Paul Brennan to ensure the success of this event. In addition to Skippers' Plan, Bristol Marine is once again a sponsor. Both Skippers' Plan and Bristol Marine have been extremely supportive of events at ABYC, so we should all support them! For intrepid dinghy sailors, this weekend is also Fall Cork.

Don't forget - it is not too late to register for the Summerville at www.lorc.org which will be held September 26, the day before the last Jays home game.

Enjoy these dying days of the summer by getting your boat off the dock. It is a long winter ahead.

From Gordon Burt
Whitby 100
The 4th race in the 2015 TELDS Series. The race, rated at 100 nautical miles, started at Whitby YC on Friday evening, September 11 . The course was from Whitby YC, down the shore to ABYC's Mark 0, across the lake to the Niagara Mark, back across the lake to a mark off Newcastle and then down to the shore to the finish off of the Whitby Yacht Club.

Seven boats, across the FS and NFS divisions, started the race but, in the end, only three finished. The race was characterized by strong winds from the northeast, incessant rain, and a dreaded  40 mile windward beat from Niagara to Newcastle. The Cat Came Back, Graham Toms, finished the race in 12 hours giving them the win in the FS division.

The 5th and final race in the 2015 series is our own Donald Summerville Memorial Race scheduled for Saturday, September 26.

ABYC Takes LO300 Team Challenge

And the Winners Are...!

Congratulations to all the top performers of the 2015 offshore racing season! Please gather your crew and family to join us for a night of celebration and to receive your trophies and flags at the LO300 and SHTR Banquet, Saturday, September 26. For a complete list of the winning yachts, and trophies, and flags awarded to each Division and Fleet, please visit the LOOR website www.loor.caSee the Winners

Special recognition goes to this year's LO300 Team Challenge winners, Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club, made up of:
  • Lively - Murray Gainer, 2nd overall,
  • The Cat Came Back - Graham Toms, 14th overall
  • Umitaka - Roger Van Vlack, 13th overall.
Their fantastic showing earned ABYC's Junior Learn to Sail program a $500 cash donation, courtesy of Pat Sturgeon Yachts.

ABYC finished ahead of PCYC, in second place, and Cathedral Bluffs Yacht Club, in third.

Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

Update: Day 15 - 3077 nm to Rio

This past week has seen many changes on the race. Diane in ClipperTelemed+ was at one point in 4th and currently is in 9th.  The fleet ended up in a hole with very light winds and made very little progress. Clipper LMAX Exchange worked its way into a wind channel and was the first past the Canaries. They were also the first boat to the scoring gate position and collected the 3 points that goes with the first boat to reach it.

The Scoring Gate is a line between a latitude and longitude, which offers the first three teams who cross extra race points (three for first, two for second, and one for third).

Once Diane got out of the light airs, she was making good progress but had to rendezvous with Clipper boat Mission Performance as they had lost their water maker pump and Diane is carrying 12 replacements pumps. Apparently each boat is carrying different spare parts for the 12 clippers.  I personally don't quite understand why each boat doesn't carry their own replacement parts. I just wonder what would have happened if she had been a day ahead, would she have to return to provide a new pump. I'll try to get the answer and provide it in a later posting.

The media representative onboard ClipperTelemed+ is Mark Stevenson who is an avid sailor who is following Diane. His piece aired on Daily Planet on Discovery on Wednesday, September 9. This piece shows training prior to the race start and it is included here:

The leaders are now into the area known as the Doldrums.

The racing rules have introduced a method for avoiding the fleet being trapped for many days in the ITCZ (Inter Tropical Convergence Zone), as it has happened in the previous edition of the Clipper Race. When the teams reach the 'Doldrums Corridor', which has the four virtual waypoints, Doldrums Corridor NW, Doldrums Corridor NE, Doldrums Corridor SW and Doldrums Corridor SE at each corner, each yacht will be allowed the use of its engine and motor sail for a maximum of 6 degrees of latitude or an elapsed time of 60 hours, whichever occurs first.

Over the past 12 hours, Diane has traveled 170 nm which is the most in the fleet. I estimate that ClipperTelemed+ will enter the ITCZ sometime later today.

You can follow the race here clipperroundtheworld.com.

There will be trackers on board, a virtual race, and of course tons of media stuff coming back from the boats for you to keep up on everything.

Entertainment Committee Looking For A Few Good Party Throwers

The Entertainment Committee has a solid core of terrific volunteers that look after organizing and running the events that the club throws throughout the year but we are looking to add a few new recruits to help out. It's a good way to get involved with the club and a great way to get to know people. Whether you are interested in taking charge of an event or just looking to assist, we would be happy to hear from you.

If you feel like joining or even just learning more about how things work, please contact:

We will be scheduling a meeting of the Entertainment Committee in the next couple of weeks to discuss the schedule of events for 2015-2016 and all are welcome to attend.
