A Good Laugh by Sandra Strangemore

It seems like ABYC holds an ancient Egyptian tradition alive and well. Following a trip to Stonehenge this summer, Sandra Strangemore noted that ABYC's haulout technique was good enough for the kings of 2,000 BC!

In-Water Winter Lay-Up

Town-Hall Meeting, Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 11:00 am

The subject of In-Water Winter Lay-Up (IWLU) has been raised by our Vice-Commodore Marine Services, Erik Dullerud. With the summer winding down, a town-hall meeting on the subject is needed. As many will recall, the IWLU Committee made a presentation on the subject at the Spring General Meeting. Many have expressed interest in the concept, and ABYC's Board members have given the green light for it to be implemented this winter on a trial basis.

The purpose of the meeting is to renew the dialogue, exchange information, and assemble a formal list of those boats that will participate. Space will be limited to a maximum of 8 boats in this fall's trial program. Members who have decided to participate should notify:

Al Workman, Committee Chair, at alworkman@sympatico.ca or
Erik Dullerud, VC Marine Services, at erik.dullerud@gmail.com

Subject to your confirmed participation and available space, we recommend that you purchase the required Ice-Eater as soon as possible. (We understand that the Rigging Shoppe can offer local supply through Mike Macdonald.)

Travel Lift Proposal

Town-Hall Meeting, Monday, September 14, 2015 at 7:00 pm

The first town-hall meeting to discuss the issue of potentially acquiring a travel lift system for boat handling at ABYC was held on June 1, 2014. At that meeting, several attending members asked good/relevant questions regarding the proposal.

A second follow-up town hall meeting will be held on Monday, September 14, 2015 for the purposes of:
  1. Repeating the presentation for the benefit of members that did not have an opportunity to attend the first meeting. (The presentation will be updated with new and additional information obtained since June 1.)
  2. Addressing questions posed by members at the first meeting.
  3. Obtaining additional input from concerned members.
  4. Discussing path forward.
All senior members are strongly encouraged to attend.

ABYC Invited to Nuit Blanche
 ________________________________________________________________________________

Dear boat owners and yacht club members,

This is the 10th anniversary of Nuit Blanche and we at City of Toronto Special Events are proud to be commissioning a special project this year by renowned artist Mary Mattingly called Torus. We are pleased to invite ABYC members to be a part of Nuit Blanche 2015 by participating in this interactive installation and being a part of this art piece.

The Project: It will be a floating sculpture which looks like a glistening mesh torus afloat on the shores of Lake Ontario. Inside the torus is a garden landscaped interior with a view of the surrounding urban shoreline. Just prior to sunset, the Torus will be tugged to shore and tied to a pier where it will be docked for the night. Following it will be a procession of boats joining in celebrating its journey from the Toronto island to the shores of the mainland where spectators await its arrival. People are invited to walk in and around the floating Torus and enjoy a serene space as the sun sets. Throughout the night of Nuit Blanche, visitors are encouraged to come aboard the Torus, experience the water's motion and celebrate our collective relationship with Toronto's water.

Your role as participants: What we are looking for are boats and their owners who would like to be part of the celebratory procession that leads the Torus from the Toronto Island to its event location, by the east pier at Harbourfront centre.

Location & Time: The procession starts at Toronto Island, October 3, at 6:30 pm, and ends at east pier at Harbourfront Centre at 7:30 pm.

Mary Mattingly is an artist based in New York. She recently undertook a three-part project beginning with Flock House Project (2012), three spherical living-systems choreographed throughout the United States; Triple Island (2013), a home and community garden exhibited at Pier 42 in Lower Manhattan; and WetLand (2014), a residency launched on the Delaware River in Philadelphia. Mattingly also founded the Waterpod Project, a barge-based public space containing an autonomous habitat that migrated through New York's waterways. Her work has been featured in Artforum, Grey Room, ArtNews, Art in America, the New York Times, Le Monde, and on BBC and Art21.

We would love for Toronto's boat owners to play a significant role in Nuit Blanche 2015 by being a part of this unique project. If you are interested, please contact Jennifer Goodwin at jgoodwi2@toronto.ca.

More information will be available upon request. Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you.

Oakville Cruise

With perfect weather in the forecast, La Belle Aurore and Amarone II (both cruise co-hosts) and a number of other Abees' boats left our club on Friday morning, destination The Oakville Squadron (OS). The sail over was pretty rough in ~20 knots of wind from the North East and waves building to 2 meters. With only the jibs out, the boats were in Oakville in no time and the average speed was close to 7 knots.

With 27 boats scheduled to attend this cruise, it was opportune to be able to get to dock early and store all of the Saturday menu in their large kitchen. That evening, OS hosted a grill your own BBQ with all the trimmings for a very reasonable $10 per person.

Saturday began in the kitchen and we waited for the first boats to arrive in Oakville. The Oakville Club (OC) was very accommodating and they held 5 slips for Abees boats with children on board, 8 in all.  This was a perfect solution for such a large cruise and the kids were delighted to be able to use the OC's facilities, including a beautiful pool.

On Saturday evening we all congregated at the OS and everyone enjoyed appetizers supplied by the individual boats and a menu of Gazpacho, Cuban Pork, beans and rice, confetti couscous, and a tomato feta basil salad.

On Sunday we could spot many a dinghy and paddle board going up the river to explore its banks. Then on Sunday evening Larry of the OC organized for a restaurant to open for an Abees only dinner at Pasquale's Trattoria. We all had a great meal and of course the conversation was all about sailing.

The return sail was perfect with ~15 knots of wind from the South West and many a spinnaker could be seen fully deployed.

Racing

Our Race Committee
Let's Show Them Our Appreciation!!
 _________________________________________________________________________________

BBQ at ABYC Sunday, September 13

Have you ever stopped to think how much work it is to run races, and to do such a good job at it? It takes a strong, committed team.

At ABYC, we are truly privileged! We have a Race Committee made up of more than 60 people! They consistently donate their time, come rain or shine, to support the racers. They are known around the lake for their skill at putting on well-managed races.

I've heard many racers say how appreciative they are but I don't think those comments often make their way to the individual members of the RC. It would be a real shame if the summer passed without the RC knowing how much we care and the racers having a chance to show their appreciation.

A few of us have gotten together to brainstorm and here's what we propose:

Sunday, September 13 (about 5:00 pm) after the Vertigone/Minerve Challenge Race, let's have a:
  • BBQ: Burgers (including some veggie ones) and 'tater salad, with tomatoes, onions, pickles, and squeezable condiments.
  • ABYC Patio: Indoors if inclement weather.
  • Food:
    • Racers to bring appetizers and desserts (you can make them yourself or buy)
    • BBQ: racers pay for own ($10 incl tax and tip), ABYC to cover cost for RC
  • Mingle: We encourage the racers and RC members to mingle (this would be a great opportunity for racers to personally say thank you).
  • Cheers: Let's have some group cheers and photos to show how much we appreciate our RC and each and every one that shows up to support our races
If this is a hit, we could consider making it an annual event. Perhaps with entertainment, etc.
.

We welcome your feedback:

Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

First Report During the Race!

The Clipper round the world race began Sunday, August 30, from the Saint Katherine Docks in London, England. It was streamed live and all 12 of the clipper boats dropped their lines as their boat names were called, proceeding out into the Thames where they all assembled. They opened the Tower Bridge, they all paraded under the bridge into the upper pond where once again they assembled and were led back under the Tower Bridge by the Clipper boat Great Britain. They then proceeded down the Thames to arrive at Southend for the start of the race on Monday morning. The race from London to Rio is a total of 5,968 miles and it is anticipated that the boats should start arriving there approximately on September 27.

The Clipper boats are 70' long and have a crew of 22. Ten of the crew are on the boat for the entire 11 month circumnavigation and the other crew will be there for sometimes one leg or several.

The boats have made it through the English Channel and across the Bay of Biscayne and, as of the morning of Tuesday, September 8, they have been racing for 8 days and are north of the Canaries.

The Clipper boat that ABYC's Diane Reid is skippering is ClipperTelemed+ and, as of Tuesday morning, she is in the 6th position and has completed 1,900 nm.

You can follow the race by going to the Clipper round the world race. Each day the skippers of put in a report as well as one by the crew. There is a chart that shows the position of every yacht and the listing shows the position and the distance left to sail. The position is sometimes changing daily as they make their way toward the doldrums where they could end up sitting for a few days.

Opti Canadian Championships Report
______________________________________________________________________

This year seven of ABYC's Opti race sailors traveled to Squamish BC to compete in a fleet of 80 boats in the Canadian Optimist Championships. This event happens every year at the end of the summer for Canadian and non-Canadian competitors. Each year, the location for Canadians moves from West Coast to Centre then back to East Coast. As the end of the summer approached, the seven sailors prepared to fly across the country to the cold, brackish waters of Howe Sound! Many sailors from across the country flew out to participate in the Canadians and to try to earn a spot on the Canadian Optimist Team. Sailors on Team Canada have the opportunity to compete in Optimist Regattas all over the world.

After several days of advance training in 20 knot winds with sailors from BC, Quebec, and the US, the 2015 Optimist Championships began on August 31. Everyone was really excited to sail! Each competitor took time and energy to rig their boats to perfection and put on all the gear they owned because it was cold and pouring rain. From Monday until Thursday the race committee tried to send us out on the water and start a race without success because there was no wind. The shocking conditions took all the competitors by surprise because Squamish is normally a very windy place. Start times were moved up from 1 pm to 10:30 am in hopes of finding a weather window to run some races but still no luck, despite a few false starts. The regatta organizers provided soup and other nourishments on land while temperatures hovered around 10 C.

Photos - Lucille King

Despite the weather, during the week the ABYC team was having all sorts of fun. We went for a team dinner and three members of the BC team joined us. Karen Johnson, former 470 World Champion and Canadian Olympic Team member at the Seoul Olympics was a parent of one of the BC Team members. On Thursday all the competitors went to West Vancouver Yacht Club for a BBQ dinner and some prize giveaways! We are pleased to say that every ABYC member's name was pulled from the hat and we were given tapered mainsheets, wind indicators, gloves, and even a kilogram of skittles!

On the last day of the Canadians we still had no races. For a final try, all the competitors arrived Friday ready to race! As luck would have it the race committee found a dead body in the harbor as they were leaving the dock to set the course. Just like a flip of a switch the regatta site became a crime scene. We watched as fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars pulled up to Squamish Yacht Club; after hours of waiting it was confirmed that someone had drowned. The victim wasn't anyone in the regatta or anyone we knew but it was still devastating to hear.

As we were about to call the day (and the regatta) a bust, the wind picked up and we launched! When we got to the course the wind was a respectable 8 knots. With desperate precision the race committee started race after race amounting to five races!! The race committee was very impressed with the competitors' discipline on the start line - there were no general recalls. The competitors needed every minute to get the final race started, securing a drop race for the series. ABYC had a great day on the water. Davis Dejean came in 6th in Silver fleet with several top three finishes. Nathan Latka finished as high as 17th and got an impressive 30th place. Kate Evans had a great regatta always in the top half with a best race of 14th! Kate finished 24th overall! Bridget Latka also did a stellar job and rounded in top fifteen on the first race. Danny Assimakopolous had some great finishes that included a 45th and had some really good legs that were well into the top half. Hunter Dejean finished in 15th and got an award for 5th girl. She also port tacked the fleet on the third race. Oliver Van Rossem was ABYC's top boat finishing 9th. Oliver won an award for 9th in Red fleet and had a 4th place finish. Overall, all ABYC boats had a great event and learned a lot, and several members will likely be offered spots at international events next year once the selection process completes this fall.

A big thanks goes to our coach, Linor Berezin, who helped us all learn so much and do well! Next year ABYC is ready to do even better!!

Missing Cradle Pads

Attention All Members

At launch this year someone has taken my cradle pads. Can you all kindly look to see if you have mine.  They have fairly thin, tall posts with carpeting and my member number written on all of them in magic marker.  Number 1413.

I have someone's pads that do not belong to me. I will be out of the country from October 4 - 20 and would like this sorted out before my departure. I would like to avoid having new ones made, as it would be a cost I should not have to incur. I can be reached at 416-580-3998. Again, please look to see if you have them.
