The Ever Popular Wednesday Night Wings & So Much More

The new menu at the club has been received with genuine enthousiasm as members anxiously await their dinners. Comments were very positive indeed, especially from yours truly as I enjoyed yet another gluten free pasta with gluten free garlic bread.

A special thank you to the chef and team for preparing fine fare for us all!

ABYC Contribution & Special Awards

Each year, ABYC recognizes some of its most significant volunteer and special contributions. While our season isn't over yet, it is not too early to start thinking about people who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

ABYC Contribution Awards:

Commodore's Award
Presented by the Commodore for best representing ABYC in any branch of yachting, inside or outside the Club.

Al Clinker Memorial Award
For the Unsung Hero. Awarded annually to the individual (not necessarily a senior member) who was always cheerfully helping out for the benefit of ABYC and fellow members.

Alice Patterson Memorial Trophy
To be awarded in recognition of services to boat racing.

Cradle Crew Award
To be awarded for meritorious service by a member of the cradle crew at launch and haulout.

Don Davis Trophy
Awarded annually to the ABYC dinghy sailor who made a measurable and recognized contribution to the advancement of ABYC. Contribution may be in the area of cruising, racing, or club improvement.

Hartley Trophy
To the family that contributes the most to club activities.

Leo Cotey Trophy
For presentation to the woman who has contributed most to ABYC during the year.

Otto Van Dam Shorewall Trophy
For volunteer services rendered to the club (Marine Services).

Rolly McKillop Award
For annual presentation to a member for volunteer services rendered to the club (Marine Services).

Stacy Trophy
This trophy is presented annually to the member who makes the greatest contribution to developing a lifelong love of sailing in young sailors, whether through keelboat or dinghy racing, or cruising.

ABYC Special Awards:

Keen Crew Award
Awarded to the person who has demonstrated, as crew, outstanding dedication or performance.

Michael Stuart Trophy
For the most outstanding act of sportsmanship.

Please take a moment to think about those members who've done something special at our club this year. All nominations must be in writing and should be sent to rearcom@abyc.on.ca.

Some of our awards are decided by specific members of the board or committees but all nominations are welcome, and will be forwarded to those making the decision.

Nomination Committee:
Focus on the Board - Vice Commodore Member Services
________________________________________________________________________________

The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting cooler. We hope you have had a most enjoyable sailing season. How fortunate we are to be members of ABYC and all it has to offer. Unfortunately our club doesn't run itself. It takes an army of volunteers led by a very dedicated board of directors. It's the time of year to give some thought as to whether or not this is the year you want to run for a board position.

Candidates confirmed to date:

Commodore - Bob Hedley (incumbent)
VC Planning - Bob Brew (incumbent)
VC Member Services - Mike Macdonald (incumbent)

Sr. Vice Commodore - OPEN

Our last but not least position for this term is that of Member Services. Again, we encourage you to reach out to those who held these positions in the past for their personal thoughts and experiences.

Past and Present Vice-Commodores Member Services; Mike Macdonald, Cindy Samson, and Cheryl Wright.

Worth noting from our by-laws:

4.02 Qualification - Each director shall be:
(a) eighteen (18) or more years of age, and
(b) a Senior member or Life member of the Club.
No member shall be elected as Commodore or Senior Vice-Commodore or Rear Commodore unless such member has at least a third (1/3) interest in a boat enrolled in the Club Fleet.

Have we peaked your interest? Read on!

1.05 Vice-Commodore, Member Services (Updated: Aug. 12, 2013):
a) liaise with the Club Manager and the Food and Beverage Manager of the Club for compliance with local government agencies and departments regarding food and beverages;
b) advise and work with the Club Manager to manage food and beverage operations;
c) administer House Rules and monitor compliance with policies established by the Board and compliance with Liquor Licence Regulations;
d) liaise with the Club Manager regarding the finances of the Club House and facilities and provide reports thereon to the Board;
e) liaise with the Club Manager regarding Clubhouse facilities bookings to internal sub-groups or to
outside organizations within the policy laid down by the Club and the Board;
f) establish and appoint chairs for the following committees: Communications, Member Services, and House.
g) liaise with the House Chairman and the Club Manager to ensure clubhouse and its ancillary equipment are maintained properly; and,
h) liaise with the Club Manger regarding Staff issues related to the Food and Beverage operations.

Remember... you have until Election Day (September 21 AGM) to put your name forth. If you have any questions, please contact anyone of us on the Nomination Committee.

Boat Storage Deadline
 ________________________________________________________________________________

Although we are still quite some time away from haul-out, the September 7 deadline for notifications regarding boat storage is approaching fast.

It is essential for the haul plan that we have an accurate count of those boats that are to be hauled by crane and stored on the club's property this year.

Anyone who falls into one of the following categories is asked to inform me (copies to Lidia in the office) if they are planning to haul by crane and store at the club this winter:
  1. Owners of boats that did not haul/store with us last year and are coming back.
  2. Owners who stored with us last year but do not plan to do so this year.
  3. Members who have a different boat this year (unless you want us to try squeezing your new big boat into your old small cradle).
Owners who hauled/stored with us last year and plan to do so again this year do not need to inform the office.

If there are any questions, please feel free to contact me at roy.little@bell.net or Lidia at officeadministrator@abyc.on.ca.

September Cruises
Oakville Yacht Squadron - September 5, 6 & 7
Hosts: Bruce Hannah & Claude Tremblay (Amarone II)
Rick & Doreen Itenson (La Belle Aurore)

No 'wait list'. Additional slips are available at OYS so we are accepting late registrations for this cruise until Friday morning.

Finding a dock slip at a yacht club over this long weekend will be difficult. Join the ABYC cruise to OYS and be guaranteed a dock slip. This is a great cruise opportunity for new members who joined the club this summer to participate in a club cruise before the summer's end. Not sure what a 'club cruise' is all about? The Cruise Hosts and Cruising Captains will be happy to assist you in joining this cruise.

Contact cruising@abyc.on.ca if you would like more information about this cruise and/or our Club Cruising Program.

Etobicoke Yacht Club - September 19 & 20
Hosts: Roger & Penny March (Day Dream II)
Jamie Donaldson &  Joyce Guest (Aleta Azul)

Please address email registration to admin@abyc.on.ca and cruising@abyc.on.ca and include boat name in subject title.

NOTE: If you have not heard from a cruise host within 72 hours of the cruise, please contact the Cruising Captains (cruising@abyc.on.ca) to verify registration status.

QCYC Open Regatta, Saturday, September 12

This is a one day event for the course we are running. We are supplying a committee boat only - no mark boats - but I'm still a couple of people short.

If you are able to help with this event, please let me know ASAP, as it's coming up fast.

As mentioned in last week's Ship2Shore, it has been the year of the Laser, whether Standard rig, Radial rig, Master's, or Youth. CORK hosted three World Championships for the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) in Kingston, and ABYC members were involved in all aspects of these regattas, including racing, race committee, and judging.

The most recent of these was the Radial Youth World Championships. ABYC had three competitors - Quinten Beelik, Shawn Gershman, and Ian Doell. For Quinten and Ian, it is their first year out of the Opti fleet and into the Radial, so it was a great experience. I felt for Shawn when he was in third place in a race when the wind abandoned the course, forcing the Race Committee to do the same. There were 198 competitors in all. Thirty-eight countries were represented in this very major Youth World Championship. The winner in the Male division was Conor Nicholas from Australia, and the female champion was Maria Erdi from Hungary.
Don and Liz MacIntyre and Paul Brennan represented ABYC on the Race Committee. Ian Gow was also present for the Olympic Classes Regatta which took place at the same time.

Racers in order left to right:

Quinten Beelik 195592
Ian Doell 291295
Shawn Gershman 134163

The intrepid ABYC Wednesday night racers faced tough competition from one of our Juniors, Connor Bowman, on Saturday for the Hanson Trophy Regatta. With 12 boats on the start line, there was even a general recall (a first in my memory!). Paul McDonald, Karen Albert, Tim Hill, and a friend did a great job of trying to run races in winds of about three knots or less.

The wind died completely during the second race and the RC wisely shortened the course. As the wind never did return, that was the end of racing for the day, so we were towed back ashore for a bbq thanks to David and Camielle, and to tell tall tales. Connor was first overall, just ahead of new Sailing Committee chair Calum Semple with Julie Hughes in third. Despite the lack of appearance by the wind, it was a great day and a good time was had by all.

Meanwhile, it appears there was considerably more wind in Humber Bay for the Etobicoke Yacht Club Open Regatta. In IRC 2, Paul Angus Bark and the crew of Crime Scene placed 7th, while Murray Gainer and the Lively team were 9th. In IRC 3, the Flynns placed 3rd in IRC 3. (Although he was racing under the HYC burgee, I should mention that new ABYC member Jim McGuinness placed 2nd in Five-Fifteen in IRC 2.) Eriks Kalvins placed 5th in the J24 division aboard Black Pearl and Tim Connolly was 7th in Humidor.

Next up is the QCYC Open on September 12, and the LORC season finished with the Summerville on September 26.

Many thanks to Alison Wardman for the great pics!

Optimist Canadian Championships

In Squamish, BC our Optimists return from a training session at the foot of The Chief, a 2300 foot rock face that looms over the course. Training for the Optimist Canadian Championships concluded Saturday, and racing runs through Friday, September 4. ABYC has sent its largest contingent ever to the event, with seven boats making the trip out West.

Stay tuned for racing results next week as well as news from the Canadian Optimist Dinghy Association General Meeting, where ABYC will present its bid to host the Opti Canadians in 2016. This is a rare opportunity for the Club, as the next Ontario slot in the rotation will be in 2022.

ABYC Family Race #2 Follow Up
 ________________________________________________________________________________

Apologies for the belated note - not my intent. The loft is at full speed and my plate is rather full.

We are very pleased with the outstanding participation levels for both Family Races. It has been pointed out (to me) that there are no awards allotted for these races. In Family Race #1 (Summer Fest, July 11), I had my loft, UK Sailmakers Toronto, supply day duffels in the customary Yellow, Red, Blue colours for awards.

We wish to supply the same for the Family Race #2.

The primary objectives to the Family Races are as the name suggests; to get families out and boats off the dock (enjoying the sport). By all accounts, these events do well at that. The weather is also a big help, and, while these races are low key, they are races none the less. Good performances are to be awarded.

Would 1st Gord Burt, Jazz 1, 2nd Carolyn Weckesser, Latis, and 3rd Calum Semple, Sona, please contact me at brian@uksailmakers.com or 416-915-9134 to arrange duffel pick-up.

While I have your attention, should there be any Family Race feedback, please make no hesitation in sending word. These are your events and we wish them to fit well to your cause.

Kindest regards,

Brian Chapman

First 1D Cup Challenge
_________________________________________________________________________________

ABYC has been invited to participate in the first 1D Cup; a yacht club challenge regatta pitting sailors from ten clubs around Ontario against each other. Fleet racing will be in Flying Tiger 7.5M boats from the Bronte Outer Harbour Marina over the weekend of Sept 25/26/27.

Crews are made up of five and the intent is that each club will bring one person under 18 years old from their junior sailing program as a member of the team. There is a $500 entry fee per club that includes the whole weekend racing on our boats and a practice day if required on the Friday. The event is being sponsored by Zhik and there are lots of prizes. First prize is $1,000 in sails for the club's junior sailing program. All of the details for the event can be found on the website  1dsailing.com/1dsailingcup.

ABYC will fund the $100 portion of the entry fee for any team's junior member. All sailing members are invited to submit their interest of entering a team to Calum Semple - Sailing Committee Chair (calum@hjfi.com) on or before August 28. Please include names of all your proposed team members.
