Big Year For Lasers

It has been a big year for Lasers and ABYC will be hosting the Hansen Trophy Regatta, see below.
Recently Laser youths were heading out to practice in 15+ knots, above.
The Laser is a blast to sail in these conditions and well worth the experience.

Please put the fall General Meeting date September 21, 2015, 7-9:30 pm in your calendar.  Also note that this is one week earlier than the date posted in the 2015 Events Calendar.

We've had an incredible sailing season. Highlights for me include the club's regatta and cruises, Pan Am Sailing and meeting up with so many fellow boaters in our 2015 1000 Islands adventures. I hope you have also had a memorable sailing season. The good news is that we still have a month and a half left to enjoy fall cruising and club races.

Please boat safely and enjoy the changing season.

Some of you may have noticed a drill rig operating near "White Wall" last week and wondered what it was doing there.

The short answer is that the rig was obtaining soil samples from the strata below lake level. These samples will be analyzed in a geotechnical laboratory to determine the shear strength and passive resistance of the soil. In turn, this information will be analyzed to determine if the soil in the lake bed is suitable for supporting the new cantilever type sea wall we are planning to install as a replacement for the crumbling existing wall.

The results from this test program will be presented in a report expected in mid-September .

ANCHOR FEST
______________________________________________________________________

As we all know too well, there are very few spots where boaters can anchor in a protected cove on Lake Ontario. So it was a perfect week-end for anchoring in Humber Bay.

Friday afternoon, we saw Portofino, La Belle Aurore, and Amarone II leave ABYC to secure anchoring rights in Humber Bay. These three boats acted as the central boat where the other boaters from Abees could raft off.

Around noon on Saturday the rest of the fleet started to show up and by mid-afternoon everyone was either at anchor or rafted off each other. 10 boats were part of the party.

By 17:00, we congregated on the beach where a bonfire was lit and BBQs were set-up for dinner. This was a BYOF and BYOB event. We had uninterrupted views of Toronto's downtown. The winds were light and all enjoyed a great evening of story telling and sailing lore.

On Sunday, this motley crew met again on the rafted boats with appetizers and mimosas for all. Then, one by one, the boats broke the raft or raised anchors for the 90 minute trek back to ABYC.

Clearly this event needs to be repeated in the future.

Sunsets on Series C Race Night

As we run down the last leg of the Tuesday night Series C race to finish, the sunset shows why it is nice being offshore. A fitting end to the Series.

First 1D Cup Challenge
_________________________________________________________________________________

ABYC has been invited to participate in the first 1D Cup; a yacht club challenge regatta pitting sailors from ten clubs around Ontario against each other. Fleet racing will be in Flying Tiger 7.5M boats from the Bronte Outer Harbour Marina over the weekend of Sept 25/26/27.

Crews are made up of five and the intent is that each club will bring one person under 18 years old from their junior sailing program as a member of the team. There is a $500 entry fee per club that includes the whole weekend racing on our boats and a practice day if required on the Friday. The event is being sponsored by Zhik and there are lots of prizes. First prize is $1,000 in sails for the club's junior sailing program. All of the details for the event can be found on the website  1dsailing.com/1dsailingcup.

ABYC will fund the $100 portion of the entry fee for any team's junior member. All sailing members are invited to submit their interest of entering a team to Calum Semple - Sailing Committee Chair (calum@hjfi.com) on or before August 28. Please include names of all your proposed team members.
