Rail Meat Comes in All Shapes and Sizes

Sunday's Family Race #2 may have been a bit lighter in numbers but not in spirit. We were pleased to see a number of enthousiasts pulling hard to round the marks, and enjoyed seeing the young ones doing their best to keep the boat steady, or enjoy the ride...

Clipper Round the World Yacht Race
 ________________________________________________________________________________

Two Weeks to Race Start!

On August 30, The Clipper Round The World Yacht Race starts off from St Katharine's Dock in London England. 12 fully crewed Clipper 70s will be sparing their way around the world over 8 legs and 11 months while reaching speeds of up to 30 knots. The 8 leg stopovers will include London, Rio, Cape Town, Albany, Sydney, Hobart, Da Nang, Qingdao, Seattle, Panama Canal, New York, Derry, Den Helder, and finally home to London. At 40,000nm, it is the longest ocean yacht race in existence.  Sounds like most round the world yacht races doesn't it? Well, this one is a little different.

These boats will be crewed by amateur sailors, many of them having never sailed a boat in their lives before signing up. Their ages range from 19 to 74 and their talents range from CEOs of international corporations to the local barber who has been cutting your hair for the last twenty years. For them this is a lifelong dream being realized. They are going to experience an amazing adventure, triumph over adversity, and build friendships that will last forever. Don't worry though... they aren't alone out there.  Each yacht has a professional Skipper on board and they have been training their crew for a while now.

The Clipper program includes several ISAF and Safety at Sea courses, onboard systems courses, and also four weeks of race training. All of the Skippers have been training their crew for months and are chomping at the bit to get going on leg 1. So, if you are wondering why you haven't seen me on the docks this spring and summer, it's because I've been a little busy in England training my crew. I am very privileged to have been chosen to Skipper Team ClipperTelemed+.

ClipperTelemed+ is a joint venture between Clipper Ventures and Praxes. Praxes is a Canadian company that supplies a variety of onboard medical care facilities from equipment to telephone support in emergency situations. They have doctors on call 24/7 for you anywhere in the world:  clipperroundtheworld.com/telemed

This week we are preparing the boats for the first leg. It's amazing how much 'stuff' these boats need to get across an ocean. We will have 22 on board for the first leg. That means 22 toothbrushes, 22 pairs of boots and 22 of a zillion other things. Not like the old days of my solo sailing where I only had half a toothbrush and if I lost it I had to resort to my finger!

You can follow the race here clipperroundtheworld.com

There will be trackers on board, a virtual race, and of course tons of media stuff coming back from the boats for you to keep up on everything.

ABYC's J80 Fleet is Growing!

Jim McGuinness Joins ABYC with J80 Quicker

We are excited and happy to announce that Jim McGuinness has joined ABYC with his recently puchased J80, Quicker.

J80s are smaller in size but bigger in excitement, with a retractable sprit and asymmetrical chute easily managed by skipper and three crew. They've been around for a while but the interest in Toronto has been growing, as larger crews become less manageable and larger sails more expensive. Five raced one-design at the RCYC open, nine competed at LYRA a few weeks ago, and the 2016 North Americans will be in Toronto.

There is a lightly used, well priced J80 on the market now... Anyone interested in joining the fleet? Fo r details, please check ABYC's Buy and Sell.

ABYC Cruises - the Jumping Point of Time on the Lake

We all did the Port Credit cruise on the August holiday weekend and stayed out cruising the west end of the lake:
  • Royal Hamilton for a couple of nights
  • Fifty Point (where the picture above was taken )
  • We even joined the ABYC cruising fleet at Tuscarora
The kids had a blast. There was some great sailing, swimming, dingy rides, and even a birthday cake for Hannah who turned 8.

We will plan more adventures together next year!

1,000 Island Rendez-Vous
______________________________________________________________________

Bringing Back a Cruising Tradition

In the past, it had always been a practice at ABYC to hold a Rendez-Vous / Cruise in the 1,000 islands. That cruise / get-together was dropped a few years ago and I thought it was time to re-instate this great sailing event.

As a re-start to this cruise, a Ship 2 Shore was published informing all Abees boaters planning to sail east in July and August to listen in on channel 16 every evening at 1700 so that I could have an idea how many boats were in a particular vicinity. The plan seemed to work well. We first met Sea N Stars while we were at anchor at Prinyers Cove and then were joined by Mikron the next day. In Prinyers, we also met our new Ship 2 Shore editors who were at dock there.

Then came time to move the boats. We left Prinyers with the destination of Trident Yacht Club, with a fuel and pump out stop in Kingston. From TYC we headed to Beau-Rivage and decided to hold the rendez-vous where we had 2 Abees boats on the west dock. We were able to hail Perseverance and Double Dutch who joined us for an evening of fun, food, and quenching beverages. In the vicinity, we encountered Solitude and Anon Brew, but the winds were so strong that the dinghies could not make it to Beau-Rivage. We actually saw 31 knots that late afternoon.
Next year we will prepare a bit more for the rendez-vous and try to organize a fleet to head east, as a group, as we used to do in the past. This gives newer members the comfort of traveling in numbers.

See you next year in the 1,000 islands.

Summer Bell Buoy / Family Race #2 Update

Summer Bell Buoy - Saturday
Despite a double shortening of the course, it was a long day. The wind gods were not particularly kind to us and we went right up to curfew time. Competitors seemed in good humour, though, as they crossed the finish line. Perhaps it was more relief than humour? Anyway, kudos and thanks very much to the Race Committee for making it all happen:

Bob Wilson (RO), Marjolyn Van der Hart, Jim Prall, and Arlene Taylor

Good job, under less than ideal conditions.

Family Race #2 - Sunday

There was a good turnout and it was a gorgeous day for this event, especially once the wind decided to show up. Cheers and thanks to your Race Committee for another successful Family race:

Brian Chapman (RO), Rebecca Crumlish, Jim Allen, John Dillon, and Max Smith

Well done, folks.

CORK Race Report

_________________________________________________________________________________

This past week, the Opti and Radial Race teams competed at the annual CORK regatta in Kingston.

Opti
11 Opti racers participated in opti CORK in Kingston against 108 boats. The winds were light and pretty shifty over the 3 days of racing, but the sailors raced very well considering the unusual Kingston conditions. The top sailors were Oliver Van Rossem in 34th and Hunter Dejean in 36th. Congrats to all of our racers! Their next regatta is Canadians in Squamish, British Columbia!

In the Opti green fleet, Katrina Bonin had a number of successful races, scoring as high as second place.

Radial
The radials raced in one of the toughest years of CORK International. Holding the Youth Worlds after CORK (which are happening now), many of the sailors from around the world came to race CORK as well beforehand. This made for an exceptionally competitive event with over 160 boats. The ABYC Radial team kept their heads up, however, and finished very respectably. They raced two days in the qualifiers before being placed into Gold, Silver, and Bronze fleets. After racing in unforgiving and unpredictable wind conditions, Will Bonin, Zoe Sherar, and Connor Bowman qualified for the Bronze fleet. Ian Doell and Rowland Goddard were just shy of making Gold fleet, with Rowland just a few points away. Clara Gravely also made Silver fleet.

They raced for two more days in the finals and, on the last day, a well-received Kingston thermal came through, bringing the winds up to around 20 knots. Will Bonin finished in 19th in the Bronze fleet, with a 2nd place finish in race three. Connor Bowman finished 34th and Zoe Sherar in 23rd in the Bronze. Clara Gravely finished in 52nd in Silver, Rowland Goddard 39th with a 4th place finish in race four, and Ian Doell in 17th with a 6th place finish in race three.

Congratulations to the Radial team for their outstanding sailing in one of the most difficult regattas!

First 1D Cup Challenge
_________________________________________________________________________________

ABYC has been invited to participate in the first 1D Cup; a yacht club challenge regatta pitting sailors from ten clubs around Ontario against each other. Fleet racing will be in Flying Tiger 7.5M boats from the Bronte Outer Harbour Marina over the weekend of Sept 25/26/27.

Crews are made up of five and the intent is that each club will bring one person under 18 years old from their junior sailing program as a member of the team. There is a $500 entry fee per club that includes the whole weekend racing on our boats and a practice day if required on the Friday. The event is being sponsored by Zhik and there are lots of prizes. First prize is $1,000 in sails for the club's junior sailing program. All of the details for the event can be found on the website  1dsailing.com/1dsailingcup.

ABYC will fund the $100 portion of the entry fee for any team's junior member. All sailing members are invited to submit their interest of entering a team to Calum Semple - Sailing Committee Chair (calum@hjfi.com) on or before August 28. Please include names of all your proposed team members.
