The Winds on the Lake
This past week proved to be an adventure in reading the lake conditions, not the forecasts. Many ABYC members came back from trips across various parts of the lake to report how the conditions started out from the east, then the west, then died down, then picked up again. The hardest part was thinking the spinnaker could add a knot or two, only to discover the conditions had completely changed by the time the sail was set to go. Even the VHF reports couldn't keep up.
Our humble suggestion is to keep the cooler stocked for the stories to tell once you've finally reached your destination (and to email them to us with photos if possible).

TYC - All American - Red, White and Blue!
Thank you to everyone who made the trek across the lake to Wilson, NY for the TYC cruise. We had 33 adults and 3 kids on 16 boats. The marine forecast was a bit off - East winds of 10 knots ended up closer to 19 or 20 knots on Friday. Most boats made the quick crossing on Friday, with two boats arriving on Saturday in time for drinks and wonderful appetizers from our fellow cruisers.
All cruisers were enthusiastically dressed in red, white, and blue. The ladies were given little paper flower corsages and the men received crepe paper 'ties'. The TYC patio and tables were decorated with red, white, and blue stars and stripes, and tissue paper flowers.
Brains were tested by the Great All-American Trivial Pursuit (no electronic aids were allowed) in anticipation of great prizes. There was a special American Quiz for the 3 kids. The winning boat (Cat Came Back) was suspect with a perfect score - it seems they were quizzing Nick, the TYC Dock Steward, who turned out to know a lot of American history! Hmmmmm. Prizes were given to the top 3 adult scores and to Hannah, Ella, and Tara for their fantastic answers to their special Quiz.
TYC members got in on the fun as well when they asked to have their patio table decorated. We quickly complied and there were enough paper flowers and ties for them and two TYC 'boats' tried the All-American Trivial Pursuit Quiz.
Our menu was 'All American' with burgers, dogs, and chili dogs with all the fixin's, plus coleslaw and redskin potato salad. Dessert was apple pie with cheddar cheese, plus some yummy contributions from the cruisers. Thanks to Rennie, our Club Manager, for amassing our food needs.
Thank you all for some super fun,
Rick and Paula Humphrey (Carellen - land yacht)

August Cruises
Anchors Away in Humber Bay - August 22 & 23
We stopped at this anchorage out on our way to Mimico CC and it is indeed a location to check out. Cruising Captain Chris, in due diligence to cruise planning, dove into the water and checked out the swimming conditions and has given it a 'thumbs up'!
IMPORTANT REQUEST: The reason that we selected this weekend to offer this 'unique cruise experience' is to get ABYC boats off the dock to accommodate the many Catalina boats that will be arriving at our club for their annual Lake Ontario Catalina Rendezvous. So, if you do not want to join us in Humber Bay, could you please consider taking your boat off the dock and visiting another yacht club that weekend? Thank you. September Cruise Registration Now Open
Registration for September Cruises opened on Monday August 10th. Thank-you to all registrants for respecting the 9:00 AM opening. We had a large registration uptake for both cruises on Monday morning.
September Cruises
Oakville Yacht Squadron - September 5, 6 & 7
Hosts: Bruce Hannah & Claude Tremblay (Amarone II)
Rick & Doreen Itenson (La Belle Aurore)
The estimated boat capacity (28 boats) has been reached and a 'wait list' has been started. Those interested in this cruise, but not yet registered, are encouraged to register as additional slips may become available but this will not be known until closer to the cruise date.
Etobicoke Yacht Club - September 19 & 20th Hosts: Roger & Penny March (Day Dream II) Jamie Donaldson & Joyce Guest (Aleta Azul) We are awaiting advice from EYC regarding the number of ABYC boats that can be accommodated. A 'wait list' has not been started but may be required based upon the information provided by EYC.

Summer Bell Buoy / Family Race #2 Update
The good news is that after last week's request for help, I was able to put together a complete RC crew for the Family Race this Sunday. Thanks to those who answered the call and signed up for this event.
The not-so-good news is that I still don't have people for the Bell Buoy on Saturday. I need an RO/driver and at least three people to fill out a crew. I realize that a lot of you are planning to take part in the race but I'm hoping there are some out there who are not racing and will step up and donate the time to make the Bell Buoy happen. If not, we'll have to cancel it and nobody wants to do that.
Please let me know sooner, rather than later, if you can help. Don't let me down, folks.

The 'regular' CORK racing season opened with the Opti Regatta. There were over 100 boats, including several from ABYC. Our sailors had trouble with black flags, almost black flags and penalty turns not quite completed, but they certainly seemed to be having a good time. Their coach, Sarah, will no doubt report on their performance but ABYC should be proud of the great group of sailors we sent to the event. I think the other judges I was working with wondered who all the young competitors were who said hello, or waved, or otherwise chatted to me as they sailed by the boat I was on.
The Youth Championships started August 10 and all weekend I noticed how our Radial sailors were out practicing. The Radial Youth Worlds begins on Friday, immediately after the Youth Championships. Good luck to all of our competitors.
ABYC members helping at these events include our Rear Commodore, Paul Brennan, Ian Gow, Rebecca Crumlish, and Don McIntyre.
Not much keelboat racing these days, except that the new East-End series held the Bluffers Basin Challenge on Saturday. ABYC was represented very well by two boats; Murray Gainer's Lively placed first in the spinnaker division with Larry Harrison's Merlin M2 nipping at his transom and taking second place.
The two crews traded the lead several times throughout the race and were separated by only a few minutes at the finish after ten plus hours of racing. The sailing conditions were characterized by light easterly winds raising a classic (and dreaded) Lake Ontario chop across the course. The competitors sailed downwind from the start off of Bluffers Park to the T2 buoy at the end of the Leslie Street Spit, upwind to the ODAS Buoy off of Ajax, and back downwind to finish off of Bluffers Park. Merlin M2 currently sits atop the series leader board with two races to go.

ABYC Family Race #2 - August 16
Brian Chapman

With August comes the 2nd Family Race of the 2015 season
I was most pleased to see such a level of attendance during Family Race #1 on July 11. We had excellent weather and I have my fingers crossed tightly for a repeat. The Sailing Instructions for the Family Race can be found on pages 36 & 37 (Appendix B3) in the events book. Should anything be amiss, please don't worry, I'll go over the details during the competitors meeting, upstairs in the club, 12:00 PM day of. These events are for you, and your complete enjoyment is fully on the radar.
To get a head start on race registration... If you are planning on participating, please send me a note (Brian Chapman, (your past Sailing Committee, Chair) at brian@uksailmakers.com)), including your Name, Yacht's Name, Boat length, Sail Number, and Boat Type. Should you hold a current PHRF rating, please supply. Is your crew made up of a person 10 years of age or younger? Does your crew have a person 70 years of age or greater? Do you plan on racing Double Handed?
Any and all questions are more than welcome. Please make no hesitation in sending word.
