AB's Cruising the Cove

With a Ship2Shore coming to you while on our first sailing vacation in years, we were pleasantly surprised to see many ABYC boats at Prinyers Cove this past weekend. Sailing to Prince Edward county offers many wonderful opportunities to explore, from the quiet breeze on the Murray Canal to the strong reach on Big Bay. Glad to see you all out there!

Nomination Committee:
Focus on the Board - Vice Commodore Planning
________________________________________________________________________________

With the Federals calling an election for this fall, ours won't be the only Elections we focus on. Let's hope ours will be less controversial. We continue our 'Focus on the Board' articles highlighting the role of Vice-Commodore Planning. Again, we encourage you to reach out to those who held these positions in the past for their personal thoughts and experiences.

Past...and Present Vice-Commodores Planning - It is a fairly new position to our board, so the pool isn't as deep as the other positions... Bob Brew, Phil Giddings, and John Waller.

Worth noting....from our by-laws

4.02 Qualification - Each director shall be:

(a) eighteen (18) or more years of age; and

(b) a Senior member or Life member of the club.

No member shall be elected as Commodore or Senior Vice-Commodore or Rear Commodore unless such member has at least a third (1/3) interest in a boat enrolled in the Club Fleet.

If that sounds like you... read on!

1.07  Vice-Commodore, Planning (Updated: August 12, 2013):

a) establish and chair a Long Range Planning Committee;
b) report to the Board on issues related to Planning;
c) liaise with the Vice-Commodore, Financial Services regarding the Long Range Plan; and
d) prepare and present the Long Range Plan in accordance with Club By-laws.

Q & A: Up close and personal with those who have held the position of Sr. Vice-Commodore in the past.

What are the challenges of this role?

  • Creating appropriate focus and consensus on The Long Range Plan document. The Board and the membership have many day to day responsibilities that occupy most of their available time so the output of the planning position must be presented in an easily digested form that is fully vetted.
  • The Long Range Plan document, which is the official output of this position, should provide a clear, vetted, and generally accepted position on our vision, challenges, and opportunities.
  • There are many factors that affect our future such as: Work at Ashbridge's Bay Treatment Plant; Property taxes; and the club infrastructure. How and if these may affect our future must be monitored, considered, and reported on.
  • It is necessary to continually review the activities of the board and administration in light of the Long Range Plan and provide feedback when activities are not consistent with the Long Range Plan objectives.
  • Finding innovative and engaging ways to encourage discussion about the club's future.
  • Ensuring the club's Long Range Plan is considered in day to day decisions, ie making sustainable decisions.

What are the rewards of this role?

  • Being involved at the board level is in itself a great education in the realities of the operation of the club.
  • Working with the Board and the Membership in monitoring and setting the short and long term direction of the club is both productive and gratifying.
  • Knowing that the club is on firm footing for the medium and long term.
  • Hearing members promote the long term view.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to run for this position?

  • The planning position is a relatively new position and the roles and responsibility are still evolving. Expect to be drawn into many areas but be aware that you must also stay focused on the longer term.
  • Listen and engage club members.
  • Be prepared to take ownership in monitoring progress and events and reporting on this to the club in a way that draws the necessary attention.
  • Be an active advocate at the Board, Committee, and club levels.

Next Focus on the Board will outline to position of Vice Commodore - Member Services.

ABYC's Nautical Symphony Wins at LYRA

David Holmes, Pascal Desrosiers, Bart Smit, and Gitte Fredericksen
By Bart Smit
________________________________________________________________________________

Nautical Symphony wanted to say thank you to the ABYC members for the overwhelming support we received before, during, and after LYRA.

This year was the 131st running of the Lake Yacht Racing Association's annual Regatta. It was hosted by Sodus Bay Yacht Club outside of Rochester, NY. The J80 Lake Ontario Fleet had a great showing with nine boats registered to compete. They came by the lake from Toronto, Kingston, and Rochester, while others took the road from Toronto and Ottawa. Our J80 fleet is growing stronger every year and regattas like this help build the camaraderie and competition that make us all better. Two local J80's competed and took top positions in the long distance races.

The three days of course racing presented us with variable weather conditions. Saturday proved to be the biggest challenge with winds over 25 knots and choppy 4-6 feet waves. Nautical Symphony battled hard to take the J80 class win (The Bud Doyle Trophy) and also became a repeat winner of the Hans Fogh Perpetual Canadian Open Championship Trophy. On top of that, we received The Kay Heron Trophy as the LYRA Regatta Champion, One Design Overall.

I personally would like to thank the limitless effort of Nautical Symphony crew: Gitte Frederiksen, Pascal Desrosiers, and especially David Holmes whose years of sailing knowledge and experience are most appreciated and respected.

I am very proud of these achievements but they wouldn't be possible without the continued support of our friends, family, ABYC family, and our J80 Lake Ontario Fleet. Also, I would like to welcome the latest member of the J80 fleet at ABYC, Jim McGuinness. His boat will arrive at ABYC soon. With each new boat added, the competition gets stronger. It helps us all sail better and faster.

Looking forward to 2016, for LYRA will be hosted by Whitby Yacht Club and the North American J80 championship in Toronto.

Port Credit Yacht Club Cruise
______________________________________________________________________

THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the Port Credit 'Caribbean Cruise' weekend in honour of Caribana.

Mother Nature also showed us her presence by providing shocking cloud formations with occasional rivers from the sky. Luckily everyone was able to enjoy the authentic Caribbean jerk chicken dinner served by the 'dreaded' Bob and Howard before she appeared.

Congratulations to the 'winners' and 'losers' of the SKI BVI CHALLENGE participants who came out in full force! A special thanks to Doreen Itenson, Joanne Wright, and Colin Andrews for ensuring 'minimal' ski winners due to their magical tilts of the infamous ski.

The photo bomb was a hit, as folks poked their heads through one of two scenarios; a guitar playing dude and a grass skirted beauty.

The wonderful pool, beautiful club house, and popular bar provided the perfect backdrop to enjoy a wonderful long weekend with fellow cruisers.

Thanks for a great time,

Bob & Cheryl Wright (Cheri)
Celia Lum & Howard Franklin (Beaucoup)

Summer Bell Buoy / Family Race #2

There are just a couple of events on my immediate radar:

Summer Bell Buoy, Saturday, August 15: I have one person signed up for this one. I need an RO and at least two more crew.

Family Race #2, Sunday, August 16: Right now, I have two people signed up for this race; I could use at least one more, preferably two.

If you can help with either of these races, please let me know ASAP. They are both relatively low key, from a race committee point of view, so major experience is not a must.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Molly

The last two weekends have been busy indeed, with many ABYC racers taking advantage of the great summer weather (even if the wind has either been in short supply or somewhat excessive).

The last weekend in August saw Crime Scene finish second in the Can Am Challenge (replacement regatta for the Youngstown Level Regatta). Congratulations to Paul-Angus Bark and crew!

Last week's S2S contained a report on the Juniors at PCYC's Steerers Regatta as well as the Four Sisters. We would like to mention that the oldest sailor at the event, Nick Bailey, placed first in the Master's division of the Laser Standard Rig Fleet at the Four Sisters. Nick has now won two of the District 3 Master's regattas. Also on the podium for that event was Ian Doell in the Radial fleet.

This weekend saw ABYC boats compete at LYRA and at the Laser North Americans in North Carolina. In the latter, ABYC's Matt Sherar placed 16th in the 58 boat Standard Rig fleet, while Sarah Douglas placed 7th in the 62 boat Radial fleet. Congratulations to both Matt and Sarah!

Congratulations also to Cliff Walkington and the crew of Gypsy for their first place finish in the R Boat division. Paul-Angus Bark and the Crime Scene crew placed fifth in the 'Pink' division. And, I would be
remiss if I failed to mention that former ABYC Commodore Barbara Jones was crew on the 6th place J80, Breakaway, owned by former ABYC member Hugh McGugan.

The links to the LYRA are not reliable so I apologize if I have missed someone. If you want to be sure your results are included, do what Bart Smit did and send your results to wendy.loat@bell.net. Congratulations to David Holmes, Pascal Desrosiers, Bart Smit, and Gitte Fredericksen on Nautical Symphony's many wins detailed in the article above by Bart Smit.

Congratulations to all!

Next weekend sees our Opti sailors head to CORK. Good luck to the whole team!

Bluffers Challenge Race - Saturday August 8

As seen in the ABYC Events book (see page 16), the Bluffers Challenge Race, the third TELDS race for 2015, is set for August 8.

The race will start off Bluffers Park. The course will use fixed navigation marks and the race may be shortened based upon the wind conditions experienced that day. Participants are encouraged to arrive at Bluffers Park on the evening of Friday, August 7. Official registration and a mandatory Skippers' Meeting will be held the morning of Saturday, August 8, at Cathedral Bluffs Yacht Club.

As with all TELDS events, the Bluffers Challenge Race will consist of single-handed, double-handed, and full-crewed boats racing in spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions. Each boat must have a valid PHRF-LO certificate.

ABYC Family Race #2 - August 16

_________________________________________________________________________________

With August comes the 2nd Family Race of the 2015 season
I was most pleased to see such a level of attendance during Family Race #1 on July 11. We had excellent weather and I have my fingers crossed tightly for a repeat. The Sailing Instructions for the Family Race can be found on pages 36 & 37 (Appendix B3) in the events book. Should anything be amiss, please don't worry, I'll go over the details during the competitors meeting, upstairs in the club, 12:00 PM day of. These events are for you, and your complete enjoyment is fully on the radar.

To get a head start on race registration... If you are planning on participating, please send me a note (Brian Chapman, (your past Sailing Committee, Chair) at brian@uksailmakers.com)), including your Name, Yacht's Name, Boat length, Sail Number, and Boat Type. Should you hold a current PHRF rating, please supply. Is your crew made up of a person 10 years of age or younger? Does your crew have a person 70 years of age or greater? Do you plan on racing Double Handed?

Any and all questions are more than welcome. Please make no hesitation in sending word.
