Many thanks to Bernie and Patty Caron - What a legacy!

It is with great honour that Steve and I now begin our journey as the editors for the ABYC Ship2Shore newsletter. Bernie and Patty have done a spectacular job delivering what has now become one of Canada's leading yacht club newsletters, and we will do our best to meet the standard they have set.

We will continue to count on your support with photos and content, while maintaining the tradition of ABYC focussed news and stories. In the coming weeks, we will be asking for your feedback so please email us at [email protected] with any suggestions or comments.

We thank you for this opportunity and look forward to the many stories yet to tell. On a personal note, our thanks and deep appreciation go to Bernie and Patty for their tremendous efforts.

What's New At The Club This Week

This is the first edition of S2S under our new editors Joanne Dicaire and Steve Roberts. I would like to thank them for stepping up to the plate and taking on this job. To be honest, I was more concerned about finding new S2S editors than I was about finding a new Chef! Joanne and Steve bring a lot of experience in publishing and technology and I am sure they have a few ideas on taking an already great publication to an even higher level.

Patty and Bernie, congratulations on your "second retirement". I hope you are filling some of your bucket list items!

This week we will be rolling out our new menu. It has been a long time coming. We had some challenges with staff changes but, having seen it, I think it was worth the wait. Thanks Chef Jan and the rest of the food and beverage staff for kicking it up a notch.

Well that is all I have for this week, see ya at the club!

The 2015 Optimist European Championships took place in Pwllheli, Whales over the past two weeks. I was able to compete in this event along with four other sailors from across Canada as Team Canada. The Opti Euros is a European regatta but other non-European countries are welcome to bring four to five of their best Opti Sailors. Overall, a stunning 260 of the best Opti sailors in the world registered. Most teams arrived up to a month early to train in the venue and prepare for the event. In the first few days of training I got to practice with many different countries, such as Denmark, Ireland, Hong Kong, and Australia. This was truly a unique experience.

On the day before racing started, there was a steady 25 knots gusting over 30 and 8-11 foot waves. Canada was one of three teams that went out. The practice race was another 25 knot day. The actual racing started on the 20th and we continued to race for the next five days. The first few days were the windiest I've ever sailed in, sometimes settling in at a constant 28 knots. On top of that there were giant 10 foot waves and fog. On the second day of racing they evacuated the race course due to the conditions. I struggled with the conditions but the majority of the fleet was confident and sailed really well. The event made me understand the importance of fitness in sailing. On the last few days of racing the wind died down and I did considerably better. One of the unique things about the Euros was that they raced the boys and girls separately. Sailing in an all-girls fleet was really fun and an unusual opportunity. Overall, we got 10 races in with three races a day for three of the five days. One day the Race Committee raced us for 8 hours and we came in at 7pm.

One of the highlights of the regatta was making friends from across the world and learning about people's cultures. On the last day, all of the countries traded their team clothes and life jackets. I came home with team items from Denmark, New Zealand, Malta, Australia, Germany, Finland, and many more. Overall, I learned so much in this event and I would do it again in a heartbeat. My results weren't great but the learning experience was priceless. I've been told that once you go to an international event you come back a different sailor. This is 100% true! I encourage all my teammates to do so because it really is a once in a life time experience. If you have any questions, please ask. I have tons of stories to tell!

Frenchman's Bay Cruise
____________________________________________________________________________________

Thanks to all who participated in the FBYC cruise. We had 25 cruisers and 11 boats including some guests, a couple of renegade paddle-boarders. Much like Mimico, we started out in fog, and credit goes to Wadadli who helped escort some of the other cruisers out into the lake. Unfortunately, the wind gods did not help much as most of the fleet had to motor.

We were greeted by a very enthusiastic dock lady who got us all safely into our slips. We enjoyed 'iced-tea' on the lawn along with usual great snacks from our fellow cruisers. A raucous croquet game was held with no clear winner being declared, at least as far as I could tell. Some wonderful shooting by Sylvia and some creative arithmetic by Hazel were most notable. Although, Maggie Mae did have a final spectacular shot by clearing the last two wickets and hitting the peg in a single 'throw'. Thanks to Allen and Sylvia, we also had a great game of Bocci with Petra Fischer and David Cloutier emerging victorious.

Dinner went off mostly without a hitch, except for the perfectly timed downpour as we sat down. As usual, yours truly had to run back to close up the boat, somewhat too late. Ralph told us that the co-hosts are responsible for weather but alas we hosted solo, so I guess that's down to us!

Thanks to all for making our first hosting gig a fun and relaxing experience.

Steerers/Four Sisters Regattas (PCYC)

The Optis on Alpha Course were in good hands for these back to back regattas, totalling 4 days. It's a big commitment and many folks helped to make it happen:

Committee Boat: Paul Brennan (RO), Liz MacIntyre, Corinne Lusty, Eleanor MacKay, Rebecca Crumlish, Alan Jenkins, Susan Hogan, Nancy Wilson, Siegi Kaminski, Lynn Kaminski, and Annette Small and Nick Garrison, Opti parents who came by the boat to offer their help, which, as it turns out, was needed.

Pin/Mark Boats: Colin Andrews, Tim Hill, Stan Gap, Neil Payne, Jeff DeJean, Vlad Ignjatevic, and Ken McAlpine.

As always, the team represented ABYC well and the kids got the best racing possible.
Thank you all so much for your time and efforts - well done.

Looking forward...

The next events on my radar are two ABYC club events:
Summer Bell Buoy - Saturday, August 15
Family Race #2 - Sunday, August 16

I need committee boat help with both of these (only one person signed up so far), so please check your calendars and let me know ASAP if you can help.

17 ABYC Opti racers and six Radial sailors attended the Steerer's and Four Sisters regattas this past week at PCYC. The conditions were very light and shifty. Despite the tough conditions, the racers had some excellent results.

At Steerer's, the Opti championship fleet got in seven races. Oliver van Rossem had an excellent regatta, winning overall as well as winning red fleet. Nathan Latka also sailed really well, placing 5th overall and winning blue fleet.

At Four Sisters, the championship fleet only got in two races due to extremely light and shifty winds. Our team still placed very well, with Martin Staadecker placing 3rd overall and 3rd in red fleet, and Annie Gravely placing 4th overall.

The Radial team raced against 27 other boats during Steerer's. They raced very well, with Ian Doell finishing in 2nd and Rowland Goddard in 7th.

At Four Sisters, the conditions were tough again, but the Radials finished with solid results. Ian Doell scored 2nd place again.

Congrats to all of our sailors! Their next regatta will be CORK in Kingston!
