Well, after 24 hours of rest and a short reflection period I have concluded that ABYC participation was absolutely the right thing to do to support the Pan Am Games and the Sport of Sailing within the region and beyond our borders.

As many of you know, in November 2013 Rear Commodore Paul Brennan was approached by the chair of the Sport Organizing Committee for Sailing, David Howard, as he built his committee.  David Steenbergen was recommended to help with planning and coordinating the Pan Am Sailing, and ABYC involvement began.  Ten different boat classes racing for 8 days on 3 courses in the Toronto Harbour and South of the Toronto Islands -- there was a lot of planning and coordinating to do!

About 15 months ago the word went out from Paul that those wishing to volunteer for Race Committee and other roles should apply to the Pan Am Games immediately.  After resumes were reviewed, the preliminary offers went out, to be followed by video interviews, police checks, on-line training, and on-the-water practice starting last Fall and continuing this Spring.

ABYC would be well represented amongst the volunteers coming from yacht clubs across the country, with Dave Steenbergen (Deputy Race Officer), Elizabeth Macintyre (Finish Boat), Mary Jacobs and Tom Shenstone (Signal Boat),  Stan Gap and Roy Little (Driving Robert Humphrey which was used for Media Broadcast support), Maggie Parsons (Rescue Boat), Paul (Mark Boat), and myself driving the Jack Cameron (Media Broadcast support and other duties as assigned).

Members who move away from ABYC sometimes reclaim their heritage so to speak. We welcomed Bill Visser to the ABYC team for the Pan Am Sailing.  Bill makes his home in Kingston and sails out of Collins Bay.  Bill was pin boat on Charlie course during the games.  I know Bill was reacquainted with many members during his stay over with Ian Gow.  Thanks Bill and Ian.

Events at this level have no-appeal jury of which most of the members must be from other countries.  Sail Canada was allowed to nominate a certain number of Nationally qualified Judges to be on the panel and one nominee was our own Wendy Loat.  Wendy was a natural selection given her tremendous experience.  When I ran into Wendy on day three she gave me some insight into kinetics and how she was responsible for following boats checking for improper use of kinetics among her other duties of course.  Wow, the things you learn eh!

We were amongst 450 volunteers in all who carried out the Pan Am Sailing of which approximately 250 were directly involved in supporting the racing on the water.

To do this there are always others who help when it comes time to pull together.  We took advantage of the games to catch up on maintenance, with contributions by Mitchell Kitz, Dan Heimann, Bart Smit, and John Ballman.  It was also an opportunity to update and unify the look of our boats, with specs by Bill Surgenor and installation by Allen Lewis, and  Rennie, Lidia, Roxanne, and the Bosuns all contributing to ensure that ABYC boats looked their best on the water.

I want to thank everyone who gave their time to help the sport of sailing and make ABYC's presence felt throughout the event.  I also want to thank other members of ABYC who have volunteered at other venues in support of the Pan Am Games you all deserve a day off soon and time to relax and soak up the memories.

Yours,

Bob Hedley
Pan Am Games Volunteer and
ABYC Commodore

To Ship2Shore readers, this week marks the end of our time as S2S Editors.

It has been our great pleasure to bring to you the latest information about ABYC each week for the past 6+ years - 331 editions including 330 weekly images of ABYC events and sights plus a large number of other photos taken by us and by Ship2Shore readers.  Throughout our time as Editors, we did our best to keep the contents of Ship2Shore current and informative while remaining focused on ABYC.  Many of you provided valuable assistance with your feedback on what we were doing as well as your photographs and articles and we thank you for that.  Now however, we feel that we have taken S2S as far as we can and it is time for a fresh perspective, therefore we made the decision to pass the responsibility for Ship2Shore to new Editors.

Thank you to all readers of Ship2Shore.  Your support and generous comments over the years have been very much appreciated by us.

Next week, please welcome Senior Members Joanne Dicaire and Steve Roberts (Beneteau 37.6, "Fair Dinkum") as your new S2S Editors.  Joanne and Steve have been members of ABYC since 2001 and are familiar with the workings of the club as well as the membership.  They also have a lot of experience with newsletters and the necessary software.

With your continued contributions and encouragement, Ship2Shore will remain interesting and relevant and will become an even better newsletter.

Crane Committee Changes
- Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chair
_____________________________________________________________________

Effective August 1, I am stepping down as Crane Committee Chair and Roy Little will be taking over the role of Crane Committee Chair.

Although haul out is some time away, this notice is intended to ensure that all members whose boats are hauled by crane know whom to direct inquiries to for this year's haulout.  After August 1, information flow tends to speed up and it is important that there is no gap in communication.  Therefore, please direct all correspondence related to launch/haulout to Roy after August 1.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the club who has contributed over the years to making the crane operation a success.  It is very much a team effort.  I have enjoyed working with everyone and wish the crane committee continued success.

The Dinghy Co-op Program still has availability. The club owns 5 lasers that are for the use of Dinghy co-op members.  Any club member can sign up for this program, pay a small fee and have use of a laser for the season.  If you are a crew member and would like to expand your skills or someone who has been away from sailing for a while and would like to get your feet wet again this may be right for you.

Lake Ontario water level remains high

In case you haven't noticed, the lake level is quite high for this time of year, however, a look at the graph below indicates that the level may have topped out.  Traditionally the water level begins to recede in early July.

Mimico Cruise July 18th and 19th
Aloha!

Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts and leis adorned 80 adults, 4 kids, 1 baby and 5 dogs.  All arrived in one of the 35 boats or 4 land yachts that made their way to the ABYC LUAU at Mimico Cruising Club.  On the menu:  BBQ pulled pork, potato salad, macaroni salad, tossed salad and of course, Hawaiian Pineapple!

Thank you to our talented ABYC chef and kitchen staff, who prepared our delicious meal and had it ready for us to transport via boat to the Luau on Saturday.

Thank you to all who attended for preparing and sharing appetizers and/or dessert.

Thank you to Mother Nature for a warm and sunny day....making it perfect for a LUAU!

Further information on Set Sail for Hope
- Paul Angus Bark

The article on Set Sail for Hope a few weeks ago resulted in some general queries from the membership and regrettably the article did not include a link to the event's website.

Set Sail for Hope started in 1986 and has since raised over $3 million in funds for children living with cancer.  All the food, drink and service is donated to the event so that all monies raised can be donated to Camp Trillium; tables are sold for $1,000 per person.  The event is taken very seriously by Toronto restaurants, some of whom arrive hours ahead of time on the island to start preparing.  After having a multi course lunch, guests then go for a sail around the island on 50' yachts!

Next year's event is already being planned; there are volunteers who work on this event year round to ensure its success.  If you are interested in further reading, getting involved or buying a table, please visit the website at www.setsailforhope.com.  Camp Trillium also has its own website at www.camptrillium.com

Next year will be the 30th anniversary so it will be an extra special event.

ABYC Fishing

I write this article to build on the momentum of flying of the pride flag at ABYC, and in the spirit of recognizing the diversity that makes up the ABYC community. Not only am I one of a handful of power boaters at the club, but ... I am a fisherperson!

Lake Ontario contains a range of sport fishing species, but is perhaps best recognized for her salmon fishery.  The sought after Chinook "King" salmon and its smaller cousin the Coho have been stocked in the Great Lakes for forty years.  The once native Atlantic Salmon is making a come-back through the " Bring Back the Salmon" initiative by the Ministry of Natural Resources and its partners.  The lake also contains Rainbow Trout and Lake Trout.

On Sunday, July 12th Jim Allen - purchased a fishing trip I had donated to the OPTI sailing program fundraiser.  We were accompanied by Alan Coulter as we headed to the "drop off" east of the Leslie Street Spit. We had a great start to the day and before 6:00 a.m. Jim and Alan had our first chinook salmon in the boat, followed fairly quickly by a couple of others. When the action slowed down mid-morning we headed to slightly deeper waters where we caught rainbow trout and smaller salmon. Just before lunch we headed out to the "Blue Zone" about 10 miles off shore and about 440' deep to target rainbow trout and coho salmon. Jim landed a nice rainbow just under 14 pounds, and we also caught a coho salmon. We lost a few, boated five chinook, four rainbow trout and one coho salmon. Jim and Alan kept a few for the barbie and shared one with the folks on Red Dock.

Track me down on White Wall if you ever want to talk fishing.

July has been a busy month indeed, as it should be for sailboat racing.

The LO 300 took place as the Pan Am Games got going along with the Laser Masters World Championships in Kingston.  ABYC racers there included Jeff DeJean in the Standard Rigs and Julie Hughes and Doug Workman in the Radials.  Don MacIntyre volunteered for race committee duties.

Congratulations are in order for Murray Gainer and the crew of Lively for their victory in the MDC PHRF FC1 division (whatever that is!) and second place overall in PHRF.  Graham Toms and the crew aboard The Cat Came Back placed fourth in the same division. Congrats to Pasquale Leone and the Hammertime II crew who placed third in the MDC PHRF FC2 division and Umi Taka who placed 4th in MDC PHRF FC3.  My apologies if I missed someone - Yacht Scoring doesn't list the club.

Although there were no ABYC sailors racing in the Pan Am Games, many were ashore watching the excitement in the medal rounds.  Those races were pretty entertaining from my vantage point, that's for sure.  I am not convinced sailing will ever truly be a spectator sport, but I can understand why ISAF wants to try new formats. Alas, there wasn't much coverage, and certainly the papers didn't bother to mention that Canada won three sailing medals - 2 silver(Sunfish and J24) and a bronze (Laser Standard).  RCYC and its members provided a terrific party to thank all of the volunteers from all clubs, as well as many of their own members who were displaced during the two weeks the venue was under the control of the Pan Am Games.

Upcoming this weekend many ABYC volunteers will be headed to Port Credit Yacht Club for the Steeres and Four Sisters Regattas, where approximately 400 sailors will take part.  The racing keelboats will no doubt be headed off to Youngstown for the new version of the Level Regatta started a couple of years ago.

That's all for this week!

Challenging Opti sailing

Hunter Dejean is currently in Wales for the Opti Euros, racing in some pretty extreme conditions; winds running 20 knots, gusting near 30, with some big swells to boot.

Hunter is interviewed at the end of this clip, which was shot Tuesday, July 21, 2015
