New Finger Dock

Some of you might have thought that the outer end of floating Green Dock looked kind of odd with "that missing finger".  Well, it's no longer missing! Allen Lewis, Mike Leroux, Peter Lancaster-Brooks and a few dedicated helpers installed "The Last Finger" on the weekend, adding two more slips for large boats to our inventory.

For the Board,

  Pan Am Update -
  Access to Toronto Harbour
     - Terry Fagan
____________________________________________________________________________________

There are some concerns regarding the use of Toronto Harbour by recreational boaters, commercial charter boats and scheduled ferries during the PanAm Games in July 2015.

Based on planning to date, the following guidance can be provided.  Nothing is finalized yet but from an operational perspective, they don't anticipate that the Harbour will be restricted for other recreational users during the Games other than as follows:

  1. Between the hours of 11:00 and 4:00, we intend to run a race course in the Harbour.
  2. The location may move depending upon the wind direction and speed, but generally we intend to be in the east quadrant of the Harbour.
  3. We will have marshall boats to direct recreational boaters to go around the course rather than through it.
  4. Large commercial traffic will be restricted from the Harbour during the hours that event is taking place.
  5. Smaller commercial traffic (including most commercial charter boats) will be subject to similar restrictions as recreational boats; small boats will be permitted relatively close to the course (outside a perimeter to be determined), but the Island ferry and larger charter boats for example will have to keep further away to avoid interfering with the wind.
  6. We will ask the Marine Unit to strictly enforce the speed and wake limits in the Harbour to reduce the waves produced by lots of boats;
  7. Spectator boats will be encouraged but will be asked to anchor as much as possible to avoid making waves.

Subject to the final security plan, there should also be no restrictions for recreational boaters in either of the Gaps while the event is going on.

Of course, if the threat level increases, then you can expect that additional security measures may be implemented.

______________________________

Summer Fest comes to ABYC, Saturday July 11th.  One of the many activities is our annual "Family Race", see pages 36 & 37 of the ABYC 2015 Events Book.

There will be a "Skippers Meeting" Saturday July 12th, at 1200 upstairs in the clubhouse.  You may register at that time ... however to get a heads start, if you are planning on attending, please send a e-mail to Brian Chapman,  (your past Sailing Committee, Chair) at brian@uksailmakers.com, with your Name, Yacht Name, Boat length, Sail Number, Boat Type, should you hold a current PHRF rating, please supply.  Is your crew made up of person 10 years or younger?  Does your crew have a person 70 years of age or greater?  Do you plan on racing Double Handed?

My fingers are cross that Summer makes an appearance by then.

Any and all questions are more than welcome.  Please make no hesitation in sending word.

Cruise to NOTLSC

It was a great July 1st holiday weekend cruise to Niagara-on-the-Lake, with the majority of boats arriving on Friday.  The club received a total of 36 boats with 93 attendees in total.  Although the winds were not in our favour for crossing the lake, the weather was fantastic allowing for all kinds of activities during our stay from boutique shopping to theatre, the wine bars and restaurants for dining, touring wineries, walking and bicycling, or merely just relaxing on the boat with friends.

The group gathered in the club house late Friday beginning with appetizers provided by members, followed by the main course which offered a choice of shaved steak with caramelized onion, shredded BBQ chicken sandwiches, and fish tacos accompanied by marinated green bean, Mediterranean pasta, tomatoes & boccocini, coleslaw and garden green salads.  Finishing the meal with a selection of desserts provided by members which of course would not be complete without Liz's brownies...yummy.

The evening's event included a special recognition and toast by members in memory of Mary Pappas who passed one year ago.  As well, a birthday toast to Roger Marsh (who refused to divulge his age).

The wine tour complimented the weekend, starting from NOTLSC on Saturday morning with some 45 attendees bicycling a 20km route to a short list of wineries and sampling selections of excellent Ontario wines, then returning mid-afternoon coveting their special selections of wine purchases.  Enroute the group stopped for a pleasant wine tasting at Inniskilin Winery and a terrific lunch on the terrace overlooking the vineyards.

At key intervals over the weekend we were serenaded by abrupt canon fire from across the river at Fort Niagara commemorating the US 4th of July weekend events.  Church bells could be heard on Sunday as members prepared for the return to ABYC.  As was the case for our cruise to NOTLSC, the wind was nowhere to be found only the gentle breeze under a warm, bright and hazy day.

In summary as co-hosts we want to extend special thanks to Paul and Sue (Chillin) for being the hosts and mentors, Dave and Lyn (Minerve) for organizing and conducting the Saturday wine tour, and Claude Tremblay (Amarone II) for taking photographs.

1000 Islands Rendez-Vous
- Bruce Hannah, Amarone II
____________________________________________________________________________________

When I first joined ABYC some 20 years ago, the club always organized a cruise to the 1000 islands.  For many of those cruises I acted as the host and the Cruising Committee approved that I resurrect this event.  This year I am pleased to host this event somewhere in the Prince-Edward County or the 1000 Islands.  Likely targets would be Prince Edward Yacht Club, Trident Yacht Club, Beau-Rivage or even Waupoos.

As you can gather, this cruise is fluid in the sense that I will host wherever the most boats congregate.  Amarone II plans to leave around the 16th or 17th of July and returning around the 15th or 16th of August.

The way we keep in touch is to use the VHF at a fixed time of day during that period.  This will allow me to know how many boats are in the area and then plan a location for the cruise.  I suggest that we hail on VHF 16 then move to 08 at 1700 starting the 24th of July.  By that time I should be sufficiently east to start planning the Rendez-vous.

For those of you planning to head east, and would like to meet while we are there, please send me an email with your travel dates and likely turn-around point.  Do not forget to file a sail plan with the gas dock.

After a weekend of cold, pouring rain and howling winds, summer arrived this past weekend with warm air and sunshine. There was racing for both keelboats and dinghies, and although ABYC is not represented at the Laser Standard World Championships, we do have a few Masters who will be arriving in Kingston later this week. In case you haven't been following the Laser World Championships in Kingston, you can follow the action at: http://kingstonlaserworlds2015.com/ and there are some great videos at:
A handful of ABYC boats made the trip to Port Credit Yacht Club on the weekend for the Open Regatta, which also hosted the IRC Lake Ontario Championships. Jim McGuinness's Five -Fifteen won the event and although I don't know who all of the crew were, ABYC's Bob Wilson was aboard.  In IRC III, the Flynns placed fourth. In the J24 Division, Black Swan (Eli Gershman), Black Pearl (Eriks Kalvins) and Humidor (Tim Connolly) placed 7th, 8th and 9th respectively.  Full results can be found at: http://www.lorc.org/Results2015/2015_Results.htm

Meanwhile, some of our Juniors and one of our old guys headed to Sailfest Sarnia for the weekend.  In the  32 boat Radial division, Ian Doell, newly into a Radial having moved up from the Opti fleet, finished fourth in the light breezes off of Point Edward.  Rowland Goddard and William Bonin were 14th and 15th respectively, while Clara Gravely was 24th.

Nick Bailey was the top Master at the event, winning the Laser Masters division and placing 9th overall in the Laser fleet. Results can be found at https://www.facebook.com/groups/sarniasailfest/.

Apologies to Shawn Gershman whose 11th place finish in the Radial class at the Great Lakes Championships was omitted from last week's report.

Next up are the Pan Am Games and the Laser Masters World Championships starting July 12. Good luck to all participants, including many of our ABYC Race Committee volunteers!

That's all for this week.

Big thanks to Rick Humphrey, Carolyn Weckesser and Max Smith for stepping in to help last Thursday night, when half of the usual RC had to be away.

Now, there are 2 events that I still need help with, to round out July:

ABYC FAMILY RACE - Saturday, July 11

I need 1 or 2 people to fill out my crew. This is a fairly relaxed event, so it's a good intro to Race Committee to those who are thinking about it.

STEERERS REGATTA (PCYC) - Thursday, July 23 & Friday, July 24

Yes, it's week days, so if there is a retired person out there who can help, or anyone who can take the time for that matter, I have a spot for you to assist on a mark boat.

...and that's it for July. As always, please let me know ASAP if you can help out.

ABYC Racers at YODE and Sailfest Events
- Sara Baum, Opti Race Coach & Austin Stein, Laser Race Coach
___________________________________________________________________________________

This past weekend our ABYC race team attended the YODE and Sailfest events.

Sixteen Opti racers attended the YODE clinic at RCYC last week and the subsequent regatta on the weekend. The clinic went very well, with thirty sailors and great wind.  Thursday, the first day of racing, there was great wind and the racers sailed four races.  Friday was very light, but they managed to get in two more races.

ABYC performed very well at this regatta.  Oliver van Rossem won the regatta, winning three of the six races. Hunter Dejean also sailed well, coming in fourth place overall.

The senior race team travelled to Sarnia to compete at the annual Sailfest regatta.  The very light winds and strong current proved to be quite a challenge for the participants, however our ABYC laser radials sailed excellently.  The 32 radials sailed four races on Saturday and two on Sunday.  Rowland Goddard, Will Bonin, and Clara Gravely all sailed their first regatta in the laser, and finished 14th, 15th, and 24th respectively.  Ian Doell, also his first year in the boat, performed outstandingly-finishing fourth overall.

Great job to all the sailors this week.  The opti and laser race teams will be at RHYC next weekend for the Fogh Boorman Regatta.
