Well we're only a week away from the Pan Am Games.  Just this past weekend Brenda Bowskill (among the athletes representing Canada) was right here at ABYC winning in her class.  Sail Ontario has been developing programs and supporting Ontario athletes as they were competing and preparing to be in the Pan Am Games Sailing Regatta.

Here is a message from Sail Ontario about the Games and a ticket purchase offer that you may be interested in following up on your own.

The Sailing competition at the 2015 Pan Am Games is a non-ticketed event and therefore free-of-charge for spectators!

You can purchase tickets to the other sporting events.  Ontario Sailing will be the recipient of a percentage of ticket sales brought in through this link.

Be sure to come out and support the athletes!
NO TICKETS REQUIRED to watch the sailing races!

Click below for schedules, directions to the venue, Racing Rules of Sailing, etc.

Ontario Sailing would like to congratulate the athletes from Ontario who have qualified during the winter and at this weekend's qualifying events in preparation for the Pan Am Games.

The team consists of the following athletes from Ontario:
  • Brenda Bowskill (Radial)
  • Lee Parkhill (Laser)
  • Danielle Boyd (49er FX)
  • Evert McLaughlin and Alexandra Damley-Strnad (Snipe)
  • Dan Borg and Liana Giovando (Hobie 16)
  • Terry McLaughlin, David Jarvis, David Ogden and Sandy Andrews (J 24)
Ontario athletes represent 11 of the 17 athletes on the full team.

We would also like to congratulate the Contract Coach, Thomas Fogh for his two years of work with some of these athletes. Thomas spent many days and nights travelling to run camps and to do regatta support.  His commitment to the athletes showed in the many days he spent on and off the water supporting this program.

This program was supported by a $150,000 investment by Ontario Sailing over the past two years with financial support by the Province of Ontario through the Ministry Tourism, Culture and Sport.

Over the weeks leading up to the Games, Ontario Sailing has committed to support the athletes through more coach support, strength and conditioning, and nutritional support.

GO TEAM ONTARIO and TEAM CANADA!!!

All Members with boats:

Please check and recheck your rigging, dock lines, shackles and cleats.  The weekend rains and winds may have damaged or loosened your rig.  Wind-caused vibrations in the rig can loosen shrouds very quickly resulting in potential damage, especially to a deck-stepped mast.

After a walking inspection, it was noted that numerous boats in our harbour do not have shrouds/stays properly secured with pins/tape.  The wind and rain on the weekend may have caused your rig to loosen.

Also check your dock lines, shackles and cleats.

Remember safety first and always.

Happy Canada Day Eh!

This past weekend I was helping with the Laser Regatta hosted at our club.   Laser sailing in 9 degree water, 6 foot waves, 20 - 25 knots of wind and oh rain to boot, my hats off to all competitors!  Just hope I don't have to go through that during the Lake Ontario 300 in two weeks.  During a break of my "rampie" duties I was in my usual haunt in the gazebo checking out the return of the swallows nest in the rafters.  Looking out at the flagpole I pondered the flags that were flying.  The ABYC Burgee, the Canadian and Ontario Flags and in the middle of them all the Pride Flag.  I got to thinking about the meaning of these flags all flown proudly from our flag pole.  I am proud to be a Canadian born in the great province of Ontario. (Yes I really was, in Sudbury), I am damn proud to be a member of ABYC and proud that we were flying the Pride Flag.  The real meaning of the pride Flag is inclusion.  And that's what I love about ABYC.  All of us come together for one common reason, our love of boating in all its forms.  Regardless of race, creed, colour, orientation, professional or educational background we all have a common love, messing around in boats.  At the end of a day on the water with our boats all safely in their slips, nothing gives me more joy then spending time around a table with a cup of cheer discussing our day on the water with fellow members.

The Member Services portfolio has had a few challenges in the past 7 weeks.  We have had some changes in personnel in our kitchen.  In late May we found ourselves short a Chef.  We were most lucky to find Chef Jan van Dijsell  to take over our kitchen.  I look forward to working with Jan during the summer and bring a few new ideas to our food service.  Just when we got that all settled the other shoe dropped, our Ship2Shore editors Patty and Bernie gave notice that they were stepping down as the editors at the end of July.  Some mighty big shoes to fill!  To our amazement three people "applied" to take the position. Three very qualified people with extensive background's in social media and journalism contacted Geoff Huck and myself with interest in taking on the position.  It was a very tough decision to make.  I would like to introduce to you the new editor of S2S, Joanne Dicaire.

As former Executive Director of acclaimed cartoonist and media satirist, Ben Wicks, and as EVP of Sales & Marketing for Eyeon Software, Joanne has driven her film and media career with exceptional knowledge of the tools and resources required to creatively and successfully complete projects.  She brings this knowledge to ABYC with the goal to continue the stellar work both Bernie and Patty have delivered on the Ship2Shore newsletter.  Accompanying Joanne is Steve Roberts, inventor of the world-renowned Fusion film effects software and he is also a dedicated sailing enthusiast.  From his early days on 18 foot skiffs to today's club racing, Steve has a tremendous understanding of the trials and elations in the sailing community, and will be adding his keen insights to the Ship2Shore news.

In Property, due to an unforeseen delay, work on the junior sailing school washrooms came to a halt for two weeks.  This week work will resume and we are hoping to be finished in two weeks.  I apologize to the membership and thank you for your patience while this project is completed, I think the end result will be well worth it.

Well that is all I have for this week, see ya at the club!

Nomination Committee:
Focus on the Board - Commodore
___________________________________________________________________________________

As the weather improves and we find ourselves out on the water enjoying the long summer days let's not forget to take the time to focus on the future leadership at the ABYC board level.  As promised, in the next few Ship2Shore issues, your Nomination Committee will outline the role of each board position up for election this year starting with the position of Commodore.  We encourage you to reach out to those who held these positions in the past for their personal thoughts and experiences.

Past...and Present Commodores (to name a few): Bob Hedley, Rick Humphrey, Carolyn Weckesser, Barbara Jones, Jim Allen, Mike Leroux, Don MacIntyre

Worth noting....from our by-laws

4.02 Qualification - Each director shall be:

(a) eighteen (18) or more years of age, and

(b) a Senior member or Life member of the Club.

No member shall be elected as Commodore or Senior Vice-Commodore or Rear Commodore unless such member has at least a third (1/3) interest in a boat enrolled in the Club Fleet.

If that sounds like you... read on!

1.01  Commodore (Updated: Aug. 12, 2013):

a) shall be the Chief Executive Officer of the Club;

b) represent the Club officially to all outside organizations;

c) chair all Board and members meetings;

d) guide Club policy according to law, Letters Patent, and Club By-laws and Rules;

e) oversee the manner in which the Board carries out its duties;

f) be, ex-officio, a member of all committees except the Nominating Committee and the Life Membership Nominating Committee;

g) represent the Club officially at internal Club events as appropriate;

h) monitor and promote the Long Range Plan; and,

i) meet with the Internal Auditor as per the By-laws

Q & A: Up close and personal with those who have held the position of Commodore in the past. Getting the real information...again, we suggest you reach out to past commodores and seek their "unedited" thoughts.

What are the challenges of this role?

  • The biggest challenge is to always be looking at the big picture and not to micro manage your Board Team.  Your job is to provide guidance and to steer the ship.
  • There will be member expectation that you attend/support all or most of the club functions
  • Building a strong leadership team that works effectively together and planning for the succession of leaders in all committee leads, board positions
  • Think and Act Strategically by balancing issues, activities and work with what will be in the best interests of the Club and its members for the mid and long term
  • You will have to be receptive to opinions of all sorts delivered in various forms and manner.  You will have to have a working knowledge of the governance of the club, be able to discern where information should be passed, what jobs to delegate to whom.
  • Every member has an opinion they are willing to share, but not always at an appropriate time or in an appropriate manner.  Challenge is to find balance and the correct way to handle those situations.

What are the rewards of this role?

  • I loved working with people, working with Board Members, solving problems, the ceremony, and meeting new people.
  • Celebrating the traditions and ceremonies of the club (Levee, Commodore's Ball, Sail-Past)
  • With the support and cooperation of the Board members and Committee Chairs, you will have the opportunity to help shape and lead the development of the club
  • It is rewarding to know you have made a difference to the ongoing operation and future of the club.
  • Personal satisfaction that you are doing your best to improve the club and leave it in good hands for the future
  • And there is the parking spot near the clubhouse!

Would you recommend taking the position of Commodore at ABYC?

  • If you are open to taking advice, listening to issues, valuing member feedback, and meeting/working with people, then I would say go for it!
  • Yes it was an Honour to be able to serve my fellow members in this capacity for 4 years!

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to run for this position?

  • Candidates need to be realistic about the time commitment required to be effective in the role.
  • Have a frank conversation with family members before submitting your name, as their experience at the club will be impacted if you are elected to 'take the helm'.
  • I would also advise anyone seeking the Commodore position to have had some Board experience prior to running.
  • Sharing the Leadership - Knowing when to be in command versus letting competent board members and staff do their jobs
  • It is helpful to have a working, general knowledge of the Club business, by-laws and policies.
  • Never underestimate the membership or assume you know what they are thinking. If you want to get anything done/passed/moved forward it is much easier when you have the membership's support!

Next Focus on the board will outline to position of Senior Vice Commodore.

Set Sail for Hope 2015
- Paul-Angus Bark
____________________________________________________________________________________

The 29th Set Sail for Hope charity event was held on June 19 on Toronto island and was blessed with beautiful weather.  $171,000 was raised for Camp Trillium, a camp for young cancer patients.  ABYC was once again represented by both members and staff.  Chef Vladamir prepared a fantastic meal that included shrimp, tzatziki, melon wrapped in prosciutto, wild boar and apple blossoms for dessert.  Food and beverage manager Victoria, along with our bartender Carly, served a table of 14 which included the Deputy Mayor and the Parks Commissioner, ABYC's landlord.  Special thanks to Ian Gow, Christine Williams, Brian Sommerville, Anne Gray and Paul-Angus Bark for assisting with transportation, set up, food service and clean up.

No More Rain PLEASE!

- Ann Kay, Chair, Landscaping Committee
_____________________________________________________________________

Yes rain is good for gardens, but enough already, soon there will be root rot!

Because of this crazy weather, there are way more weeds than ever before, you don't have to look far to find them.  So when ever you get a chance, please pull some of those ugly things out, it is a very therapeutic way to earn those hours you need.  If you are not sure what is a weed, either ask myself or someone who knows about these things.

Until then happy "dry" sailing and weeding.

Pride Week -
Thank You to ABYC and its Members
____________________________________

Pride Week saw several ABYC members taking part in special activities and initiatives in support of the LGBTQ community.

On behalf of the Toronto Gay Sailing Club (TGSC), I would like to personally thank our friends & allies at ABYC who volunteered their time to participate in the Ontario Sailing program Get Out On The Water during the opening weekend of Pride Week.  With the help of ABYC members, we were able to take over twenty LGBTQ youth and organizers sailing for their first time: Terry & Catherine Fagan, Tim Hill, Dan Marcil, Shawn Sheridan, Yves Tremblay & Justin Ta, thank you!

To the ABYC flag officers who demonstrated forward thinking by flying the Rainbow Pride Flag and having a flag raising ceremony at ABYC, thank you with special mentions to:  Bob Hedley, Commodore; Elizabeth Sloss, Senior Vice Commodore and Paul Brennan, Rear Commodore.

Celebration and support continued on Sunday during the Pride Parade and again, a big thank you to our ABYC friends & allies who braved the elements to march with us.

On a personal note, my husband and I have been privileged to learn sailing with friends and ABYC members for the past twelve years and were proud to host our wedding ceremony at ABYC eleven years ago.  Respect, Diversity and Inclusion are values that both ABYC and TGSC share and promote.

Thank you to all the ABYC members for their ongoing support and Tommy and I are looking forward to sailing yKnot with you this summer, our first season as ABYC senior members!

Yanick Landry, President
Toronto Gay Sailing Club

Towering over ABYC
___________________________________________________

Members may have noticed an addition to our collection of equipment in the yard - a Cell Telephone Tower.

This was installed by Bell Mobility to meet the telephone needs of the large crowd that comes to Ashbridge's Bay Park for the Canada Day celebrations.

The tower will be removed within a few days following July 1.
Pan Am Art

The Textile Museum of Canada has commissioned artists from each of the 41 Pan Am countries to design a laser sail as part of the cultural aspect of the games.

The designs have been transferred to sails and will be flown during the opening and closing ceremonies of the sailing competition.

Sunday July 12  at 11 am and Sunday July 19th at 5.30 pm, view from Sugar Beach.  During the week the sails will be on display at Sugar Beach.  This is a free event.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Weather Friday and Monday perfect.  Weather for the Laser / Laser Masters Great Lakes Championship Regatta hosted by ABYC was, well, windy, wavy and wet to pick three words. Cold would be another.

We hosted some of the country's top sailors on the weekend, as many grabbed an opportunity to sail in big winds and waves.  ABYC's Sarah Douglas brought many of her National team-mates including Brenda Bowskill, who will be Canada's Laser Radial representative at the Pan Am Games.  Brenda certainly put on a clinic, winning four of the five races and using her only second place as her throw-out race.  Sarah barely missed the podium, losing out on third place in a tie breaker.  Needless to add, all of the top four finishers in the radial fleet were under the National Team tutelage.  Top Junior sailor was Noah Collinson, son of Scott, who is well known to many ABYC members.

In the full, or standard rig division, the battle was between two top US College sailors and "the old guy", Andy Roy, a previous silver medalist at the Pan Am games and last year's second place finisher in the 500 boat Laser Master World Championships.  Marek Zeleski, who grew up racing on his father's J24 "Twins" in Connecticut, won the gold medal.  Second was Andy Roy and third Drake Lyon.  Marek and Drake regularly compete against each other, as the former is on the Harvard Sailing Team while the latter is on the Boston College team.

We had 50 boats registered from as far away as St. Lucia, Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax, Connecticut and Michigan.  Other than Sarah, ABYC competitors included Jeff Dejean, Giles Osborne, Nick Bailey, Ian Doell, Quinten Beelik, Julie Hughes, Rowland Goddard, Connor Bowman and Doug Workman.  Several more us us came, saw and decided the 18 to 22 knot winds 8 foot seas and very cold waters were more than we could handle.

Kudos to the race committee, especially those on the Sarah Ashbridge for getting in FIVE races in conditions that could not have been less pleasant - pouring rain, two meter or higher waves, 15 to 25 knot winds and very chilly temperatures.  Paul Brennan and his crew of Molly Asseltine (what would we do without Molly?), Brian Chapman, Robert Barrington, Amanda Parsons, Neil Payne, Paul Bark, Janet Geisburger (NYC), Nick Bailey, Melissa Mayhew, Martin Staadecker, Stewart Gibbons and Dave Steenbergen did a great job in very trying conditions.  Paul also let a sailor stay on his boat.

Thanks to Neil Payne and Mike Macdonald for running the ramp duties and to Shaun Carey for struggling with the weird Master's results, and especially Grant Dietrich for running the show.  Thanks also to PCYC for providing a judge boat, and Katie Nicoll and her team of judges:  Petra Fischer, Drew Robertson, David Bruyea and John Weakley.  They spent far more time on Saturday acting as a safety boat than a judge boat.  David Holmes and Camielle Clark got up extra early to collect the breakfasts and RC lunches saving everyone from having to deal with an even grumpier than usual Wendy.

Finally, a BIG thank you to our sponsors - Skippers' Plan Insurance who has been ever so good to ABYC over the years, as has Bristol Marine.  Tim Horton's fed everyone breakfast and provided the Race Committee lunches and Muskoka Breweries helped the Masters sailors and volunteers ease their aches and pains.

Kudos to all.

That's all for this week.

Lake Ontario Laser Masters Regatta

Man, oh man...where do I start?  To say conditions were a "challenge" is an understatement.  Let's face it - it was brutal out there - huge rollers, who knows what kind of cross currents, rain, fog, you name it.  Rockin' and rollin" and  being  thrown around the boat was the order of the day, with Paul's homemade cookies being "tossed" in every direction, if you get my drift.  It was miserable, but everyone did their job  with distinction, all the while, keeping a sense of humour about it all.  When offered a ride back into shore, the more "uncomfortable" members of our team opted to stay on board and  carry on.... definitely service above and beyond.

Huge, HUGE thanks and gratitude to:

Committee Boat
Paul Brennan (RO), Brian Chapman, Robert Barrington, Amanda Parsons, Melissa Mayhew, Neil Payne, Nick Bailey and Martin Staadecker, one of our Junior members who came on board to observe and learn and was a big help

Pin/Mark Boats
Dave Steenbergen, Paul-Angus Bark, Stuart Gibbons and Janet Geisberger, who came from NYC to lend a hand.

In all, the competitors got 5 races over the 2 days, which is probably 5 more than any sane person should have expected, considering the conditions.  If any of you Laser sailors who took part in the regatta should come across one of these folks at the club, buy him or her a drink - they deserve it.

Thank you RC volunteers, thank... .thank you.... THANK YOU!!! You guys are the best.

Message to Race Committee

On the weekend of June 20th-21st, Nautical Symphony raced the RCYC Open Regatta.  We had our own one design start on the Bravo Course.  The Race Committee duty on the Bravo course was given to ABYC's "Sarah Ashbridge".

This is a shout out to an outstanding effort put forward by the ABYC Race Committee Crew.  Through various wind shifts, AP's and course changes they guided us through the planned 7 races over two days with clarity, efficiency and professionalism.

Thank you for all your hard work and for giving up your weekend time to make an outstanding racing weekend happen!

In sincere appreciation
