URGENT PLEA

This weekend, we are running a course for RCYC, returning the favour they do for us every year.
We remain short on mark layers/assistants.

Molly Asseltine has made pleas a number of times, to no avail.  Folks, as a club we have an obligation to fulfill, and ABYC always meets our obligations.  Please reach out ASAP to Molly-lou@hotmail.com if you can help.

We dropped the mandatory requirement for racers to contribute to race committee for our weekend events ... if we don't get volunteers, we're going to have to reinstate this in our sailing instructions for 2016.

Correction:  In last week's edition of Ship2Shore, we included an article with an incorrect name.  We offer our very sincere apology to Howard Franklin for that error.  The corrected article is below.

After many years, Celia Lum and Howard Franklin are stepping down as chairs of the Entertainment Committee.

Howard and Celia, along with a small and extremely dedicated group of people are responsible for bringing entertainment to ABYC.  These events include Valentine's Dance, Spring Fling, Celtic Night, "New Years" Party, Commodore's Ball, Sailpast, New Boat Owner's, Halloween Party, Christmas Events, Toonie Talk Thursdays, and more.

These events are so well orchestrated that it's easy to forget that a lot of work goes on behind the scenes.

Howard and Celia have been extremely generous with their time - taking the last 8 months to show us the ropes. And there are a lot of ropes!

We are looking forward to our new roles and looking forward to working with the dedicated folks currently on the Entertainment Committee.

To Celia and Howard - a heartfelt thank you from all of us for the enormous amount of time, energy and passion you have brought not only to the Entertainment Committee but to ABYC as a whole.

Summerfest
2015
______________________________

Summer Fest comes to ABYC, Saturday July 11th.  One of the many activities is our annual "Family Race", see pages 36 & 37 of the ABYC 2015 Events Book.

There will be a "Skippers Meeting" Saturday July 11th, at 1200 upstairs in the clubhouse.  You may register at that time ... however to get a head start, if you are planning on attending, please send a e-mail to Brian Chapman,  (your past Sailing Committee, Chair) at brian@uksailmakers.com, with your Name, Yacht Name, Boat length, Sail Number, Boat Type, should you hold a current PHRF rating, please supply.  Is your crew made up of person 10 years or younger?  Does your crew have a person 70 years of age or greater?  Do you plan on racing Double Handed?

My fingers are crossed that Summer makes an appearance by then.

Any and all questions are more than welcome. Please make no hesitation in sending word.

Have you got an old prop cluttering up your shop?
Is there an old boom just taking up room?
A stinky old head smelling up your shed?

Stuff left from a race that's just taking up space?

Well bring it all down to the Summerfest Yard Sail!

Tables will be provided.  The "Sail" will take place on the club patio starting at 11:00 am Saturday July 11, 2015.

All are welcome but advance notice would be appreciated if you intend to participate.  Please let us know at

New Members' Cruise to HYC last Saturday
___________________________________________________________________________________

Last weekend we had a fabulous time at the New Members' Cruise!  After much to do with the change in venue from RCYC to Highland Yacht Club, all worked out really nicely.

We were delighted to have 3 new member boats and their crews:

  • Bella with Melissa Meyhew, Brian O'Sullivan, and Arlene Taylor (established member assisting).  Brian was hobbling around with a swollen ankle that later was diagnosed as a fracture.  But with all of the festivities, he said that he was managing quite well - what a trooper!
  • Happy Spot with Neil Sinclair and Peggy Rintoul and their crew Sara and Nicholas fit right in - you would never have known they were new members.
  • Jonny's Cabana with John Scherlowski and Sophie Soklaridis and their daughter Eleni showed up late due to a work deadline, but settled in very nicely.  Turns out they have even signed up to host a cruise this year!

We had name tags at this cruise (a recommendation from previous cruises).  It was great being able to keep all the names straight.

The weather on Saturday was superb.  Our Highland hosts gave us full reign of the club.  We had drinks and hors d'oeuvres on their main patio and the shish kebab dinner at the picnic tables right next to the club.  We had full access to their kitchen.  We felt right at home.  And to top it all off, we had 15 minutes of spectacular fireworks.  Apparently, CBYC has fireworks each year for their Sail Past.  We had a perfect view right off our transom.

Very nice to know that we have such welcoming neighbours a short motor or sail away (winds were very light).  The HYC members even met each of our boats at the docks as we came in.

A big thank you to Nancy, Chris and Jean (the Cruising Committee) for their direction and support.

Cheers,

Hazel & Dan

Cruise to Whitby Yacht Club - June 20/21
Please note that registration for this cruise will remain open until Wednesday evening.  We are hoping that more boats will be registered for this cruise.

Cruise to Whitby Yacht Club - Missing Sign-up List
The sign-up list was missing Monday morning.  If you registered for this cruise directly on the list between Wednesday (June 3) and Monday morning (June 8) please re-register by email admin@abyc.on.ca and cruising@abyc.on.ca.

June 19 & 20 - Dock Slips Needed
A large fleet of boats from Whitby Yacht Club will be arriving for their 'Commodore's Cruise' Friday and Saturday.  The number of ABYC boats registered to leave dock for the cruise to WYC is significantly less than the incoming WYC fleet.  If you are not registered for the cruise but know that your slip will be available Friday, June 19 and/or Saturday, June 20 could you please give our Yard Supervisor (Greg) gchapman.abyc@gmail.com a 'heads up' of your pending Sail Plan?  Member assistance in this regard will be very much appreciated as we would like to accommodate all WYC boats.

Cruising Guidelines

Cross Border Cruising
The 2015 Cruise Schedule includes a cruise to a US Host Club - Tuscarora YC.  Proper documentation and identification is required for the boat and for all persons on board.  Boats 30 feet or over are required to purchase ($27.50 US) and display an 'Annual Customs User Fee Decal'.  Apply online:

Key Points to Registration (for a Club Cruise)
  • Members are requested not to register for a cruise until they can commit to attending the cruise;
  • Members may register on the sign-up lists (posted in the communications room) until 72 hours before the cruise (e.g. Wed. am for cruise leaving Sat or Tues. for cruise leaving Fri).  Members may also register for a cruise by sending an email to the Office Assistant (admin@abyc.on.ca) and cc: Cruising Captains (cruising@abyc.on.ca);
  • It is important that the number of adults and children attending the cruise is correctly identified on the sign-up list.  Accurate attendee numbers are necessary for the host to plan the reception.  If there are any changes in the number of attendees within 72 hours of the cruise, the Office Assistant and the host must be notified.
Cruise Cancellation

Registrants are reminded to remove themselves from the list as soon as it is known that they will no longer be able to attend the cruise.  This applies to those on the 'cruise list' and those on the 'wait list'.  Failure to provide advance notification of cancellation is inconvenient and disruptive to fellow members and the host:
  • While the list is posted (until 72 hours before the cruise), registrants may cancel by emailing the Office Assistant (admin@abyc.on.ca ) and cc: Cruising Captains (cruising@abyc.on.ca) or by directly removing themselves from the sign-up list
  • Members wishing to cancel their attendance within 72 hours of the cruise must provide email notification to the Cruise Captains (cruising@abyc.on.ca).
Early Return
If a cruise participant returns to ABYC before noon, a visitor boat may be in their slip (visitor boats do not have to be off the dock before noon).  The participant should contact Bosun staff via ch68 to obtain a temporary slip assignment.

Cradle Pads are back!
____________________________________________________________________________________

We were out of the country at launch and fellow members helped us out by launching our boat "SeaNStars" and secured 6 (six) cradle pads on our behalf however they unfortunately do not belong to us.  Ours are quite long and narrow in the post with carpeting of a light beige colour on the pads and I have written our member number which is 1413 in magic marker on all of the pad undersides.  I am concerned that if we don't get them back then we will have to have new ones made at an obvious cost to us.  On the upside we do have a set of six pads that don't belong to us with larger posts no carpeting and some old white paint on the pads themselves.  No other identifying markers.

If you could kindly look at the pads that you have and if you discover that they are not yours, please call Kim Cloer at 416-580-3998.

What happened to the sunny weather we had in May?  Let's hope it returns soon or we won't get those great thermal winds and we'll end up bobbing all summer!

This past weekend saw the swan song of the Toronto Area Hospice Regatta (TAHR) at National Yacht Club. Over eight years this event raised approximately $175,000 thanks to the generous contributions of its supporters and participants.  Richard Reid (Zingara) started the event and ran it with passion over the years, but as participation dropped (particularly this year), he knew it was time to end it, and so made the announcement yesterday.  Congratulations to Richard and all who supported this excellent event for charity.

And speaking of congratulations, the "Top Boat" for the event was Nautical Symphony, ABYC's sole entry in the regatta.  Bart Smit, Pascal Desrosiers, Gitte and skipper David Holmes not only placed first in the J80 division, but were selected as the boat that won the "most competitive" division.  This wins them a spot at the National Hospice Champions Regatta for 2016.  Congratulations to Bart, Pascal, Gitte and David!

The LOSHR series was also under way last weekend.  (Perhaps attendance is down at all event because there are JUST TOO MANY!).  In the PCYC to YYC race, congratulations are in order for Dennis Dice and Roger Van Vlack who sailed Umi Taka to third place in double-handed flying sails (DHFS) division 2.  Lively (Murray Gainer) placed sixth in the DHFS 1 division.   In the return portion, Umi Taka placed sixth, while Lively was third in the DHFS Division (seems kinda like they swapped places!).  Again, my apologies if I missed your results as Yachtscoring does not include the club in the results.

Up next is the RCYC Open Regatta coming this weekend.  Once again, the PHRF contingent will be offered a Saturday only "Rally Course", which sounds like it might be fun, so sign up at www.lorc.org asap.

That's all for this week.

Single/Double Handed Race

It was a beautiful day on Saturday, but the wind gods were not at all co-operative and the race had to be abandoned, despite the best efforts of your race committee volunteers:

Ian Gow (RO), Rebecca Crumlish , Alison Brannen, Charlie Alksnis, Amanda Parsons, Paul-Angus Bark  and Christine Williams.

Although we had already assembled a crew, and their assistance wasn't required this time, I'd also like to give a shout out to Susan Hannah and Nathan Fraser for volunteering to help.

Thank you all for offering your time to make this event happen.
