2015 ABYC SAIL PAST

Boats approach Sarah Ashbridge during last weekend's Sail Past.  Initially the breeze was perfect for Sail Past however it quickly left us but it didn't seem to matter.  Everyone enjoyed the day.

New Trial Membership Approved

After long discussion and careful consideration of issues raised by the one member who clearly and comprehensively articulated her concerns to me about our proposed approval of a trial membership which will allow Associate Members to store a paddle board, kayak or wind surfer at ABYC, the Board did give approval to move ahead on this on a limited trial basis.

We approved a Trial Membership for Full Associate Members (meaning this is not an option for those who come in under the introductory associate membership class and who pay a much smaller fee) who wish to bring in one of these alternatives for getting out on the water.  At this stage the program is limited to 24 boards/kayaks/windsurfers which will be stored, for the summer only, on our dinghy racks. They will be required to pay a storage fee of $100 on top of their membership fee, meet the expectations for all membership, will have to go through the interview process as any other applicant does and we will ensure that they sign appropriate waivers, understand their obligation to remove their possessions at the end of this summer, and abide by the Code of Conduct.  The Rear Commodore will ensure that issues of on the water safety are clear.

Because it is an associate membership class it means that the membership automatically lapses on the 31st of December.  We will closely monitor how this class of member interacts with the Club culture and we will do what we need to do to make sure that changes that are needed are made before the invitation to return to the club sent out to all Associate members is sent out in 2016.  If this trial does not work we will stop it.

The option of storage will be extended to existing Senior and Associate members with the same provisos.

Before we took this matter up at the Board table I sent out a request for input from the membership two weeks ago in S2S.  When a proposal like this comes up I really am asking for input.  As Senior Vice Commodore what I am most often doing is carrying forward ideas from other members that are in keeping with the overall objectives of the Board (this one is to grow the Associate Member class).  I would love it if you all thought that the good ideas were all mine but they are not...and neither are all the sometimes not so good ideas I take to the Board -- although if I take them to the Board it means they make good sense to me at the time.  I certainly have no crystal ball showing me the best way forward and I am always open to input from members.  Often I hear nothing when I ask for input, but then after something has been done I hear of back chat slamming what was done.  That is less than helpful and extremely dispiriting for those of us on the Board who are, after all, only doing our best.  So please; going forward, if there is anything you would like to say about this new Trial Membership or anything else that you would like, don't like or think might be a good idea email me, don't let me hear it through gossip, that doesn't give me a fair chance at doing a good job for you as Senior Vice.

A big thank you!

Thank you to all those who donated to our Corinthian fund last week ... a total of $4,300 was raised, including $2,400 at the Commodore's Ball!   As you know, these funds are used to support ABYC sailors, junior and senior, who head to a major competition away from our home waters.

Another thank you to all those who chipped for our Junior Sailors new coach boat for the Opti team.  $1,700 was raised on Friday night by people who couldn't wait for Saturday, and at SailPast, our Opti Sailors helped us with a record-breaking collection of $2,000, with a total of $3,700 raised.  I believe that will be the final collection for the Opti team coach boat, and I hope we'll be seeing it in time for ABYC's participation at the Steerers/4 Sisters Regatta in July.

That's $8,000 in a week, folks, for two great causes!  Be proud!

After many years, Celia Lum and Howard Wentworth are stepping down as chairs of the Entertainment Committee.

Howard and Celia, along with a small and extremely dedicated group of people are responsible for bringing entertainment to ABYC. These events include Valentine's Dance, Spring Fling, Celtic Night, "New Years" Party, Commodore's Ball, Sailpast, New Boat Owner's, Halloween Party, Christmas Events, Toonie Talk Thursdays, and more.

These events are so well orchestrated that it's easy to forget that a lot of work goes on behind the scenes.

Howard and Celia have been extremely generous with their time - taking the last 8 months to show us the ropes. And there are a lot of ropes!

We are looking forward to our new roles and looking forward to working with the dedicated folks currently on the Entertainment Committee.

To Celia and Howard - a heartfelt thank you from all of us for the enormous amount of time, energy and passion you have brought not only to the Entertainment Committee but to ABYC as a whole.

Attendees also voted (verbally) to add a category for food to next year's prize categories.  Although it wasn't an official voting category this year, Ian Gow from Who Knew received a number of write-in votes for the appetizers that were served.

Thanks to all the new boat owners that participated and to the members that turned out to welcome them ABYC style.

New Members Cruise - June 13 & 14 - IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Due to circumstances beyond our control it was necessary to relocate our New Members Cruise to Highland Yacht Club (HYC).  We were deeply disappointed that our arrangements with RCYC fell through as we know that our members, especially those with families were looking forward to this cruise.  We felt strongly that we must find an alternative venue to support a reasonable number of boats from ABYC to cruise together to a common destination.  We are committed to providing a positive experience for our new members, as well as those who have been cruising together for years.  We would like to thank HYC for making arrangements to accommodate our member boats on such short notice.

NOTE:  If you registered for the cruise to RCYC and have not received information regarding the change of venue or if you have not confirmed (or cancelled) your attendance please email the Cruising Captains (cruising@abyc.on.ca).  All boats currently registered (even those that were on the 'wait list') will be accommodated at HYC.

Cruise to Whitby YC - June 20& 21
Space still available.  Registrants have an option to sail to WYC on Friday or Saturday.

Cruise to Niagara on the Lake SC- July 3, 4, 5
Registration is now closed for this cruise.

Email Addresses
Please be reminded that if you have a change to your email address please notify the Office Assistant (admin@abyc.on.ca). And if you attend cruises or might attend cruises please cc the Cruising Captains (cruising@abyc.on.ca).

Spouse Email Addresses
This is the first year that our database includes the capacity to include a second email address in our distribution list for each cruise. Our cruising database is not linked to the club database and we do not have the email addresses of the spouse of the Senior member. If you are a spouse and would like to be included in the distribution of cruise information by the cruise host or Cruising Captains please email admin@abyc.on.ca and cruising@abyc.on.ca.

Cruise Registration or Cancellation by Email
Our Office Assistant has requested that email requests to register or cancel from a cruise be cc'd to the Cruising Captains (cruising@abyc.on.ca). Your assistance in this matter would be appreciated.

Registration/Cancellation and the Sign-up List
You are requested to check the sign-up lists posted in the Communications Room a week after you register for a cruise or cancel (whether it be by email or by direct registration on the list) to make sure that the information you provided is correct (your boat is listed with number of attendees or your boat has been removed from the list). The sign-up lists are manually updated the first of each week and reposted. Mistakes can occur so your assistance in notifying us of discrepancies will allow us to make corrections in a timely manner. Please email discrepancies/corrections to admin@abyc.on.ca and cruising@abyc.on.ca

The race will consist of single-handed, double-handed and full crewed boats racing in spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions.  The race will start off the Whitby Yacht Club and will sail west to the end of the Leslie Street Spit and back (a distance of approximately 50 miles).  Race registration at WYC is scheduled for late afternoon on Friday July 19th. The Susan Hood Trophy Race took place the last weekend in May. Ninety-nine boats were registered for one of the last "overnighters"around.  The race wasn't quite as slow as last year's, but was still not one of the more exciting races during the dark hours.

Several ABYC boats participated in the race.  In IRC1, Murray Gainer and the crew of Lively placed second behind Jim McGuinness's Five-Fifteen and fifth overall in IRC.  Graham Toms and the crew of The Cat Came Back placed fourth in PHRF 1 (the largest division), while Pasquale Leone and the Crew of Hammertime II placed 10th, narrowly beating Larry Harrison's Merlin M2 crew in 11th place in the same division.

Roger Van Vlack and the crew of Umi Taka placed third in the PHRF 3 division, and 7th overall in the 60 boat fleet.  Seems the shift is moving away from IRC and back to PHRF these days.  My apologies if I missed you - Yacht Scoring, being a US program, doesn't include club affiliation in the results.

At the RCYC Founders Regatta, Eli Gershman and the crew of Black Swan prevailed in the small J24 division.

Coming this weekend is the Toronto Area Hospice Regatta, with the RCYC Open regatta the following weekend.

Don't forget that if you want your results to be sure to make it into the S2S, send me an email to wendy.loat@bell.net.

That's all for this week.

It took some doing but we finally managed to put together a crew for the Single/Double handed race this weekend.  I even had to turn a couple of people down, which is a situation I'm not used to, so thanks very much to all who volunteered.

Next on my most urgent list is the RCYC Open Regatta, June 20 & 21. I need an experienced mark layer/driver and 2 helpers.  I could probably use 1 more person on the committee boat as well.  This is one of those times we are paying back for help they gave to us at our regatta and it's coming up fast, so if you're in a position to  help, please let me know ASAP.
