TEMP IS 9C + RAIN SO WHO CARES?

Not these young Optimist sailors!  As is the case every Sunday, they arrive early, get their boats ready and spend most of the day on the water, honing their ever improving skills.

NEW SHIP2SHORE EDITOR(S) NEEDED

____________________________________________________________________________________

After 6-plus years of outstanding volunteer service to the Club as editors of the Ship2Shore newsletter, Bernie and Patty Caron will be retiring from that position following the mailing of the July 29 edition. Therefore, the ABYC Communications Committee is soliciting applications for a new S2S Editor, starting with the August 5 edition.

Requirements:  Good editorial judgment concerning content, form, and style; attention to detail and ability to meet strict deadlines, some familiarity with newsletter publishing (and, preferably, the Constant Contact platform); a willingness to work closely and productively with content providers, ABYC Board members, and the Communications Committee; availability to devote appropriate time (a minimum of 5 hours every week, 52 weeks per year) to writing, editing and/or rewriting content, communicating with members, and publishing the newsletter; a creative interest in improving the publication; and, finally, a general knowledge of Club operations and functions.

If you would like to express interest in this position, please send an e-mail message to either Mike MacDonald [email protected], Geoff Huck [email protected], or Ship2Shore editors [email protected].  The Ship2Shore Editors are available to discuss any aspect of the newsletter with anyone interested and will provide assistance as required to ensure a smooth transition.

Corinthian Fund-raiser:
Reserved Parking Spaces for the Largest Donations!

Each year, our Corinthian Fund is available to provide support for ABYC members to compete at major events away from our home waters.  This year so far, we have supported three ABYC junior members who are travelling far and wide to compete and advance their skills:

  Sarah Douglas, the newest member of the Canadian Sailing Team;
Matt Sherar, who continues on the Ontario Sailing Team; and
Shawn Gershman, who is steadily working his way up the ladder

Each of these young sailors started this year in February at the Laser Midwinters East, in Florida, and have a very busy calendar for the balance of the year.

This year the two parking spaces adjacent to the walkway by the flagpole will be reserved for those who make the two largest contributions to the Corinthian Fund between now and 9 p.m. on June 5th.

You can make your donation with the office until 4 p.m. on June 5th, and donations will also be accepted at the Commodore's Ball until 9 p.m.

Please, help the Corinthian Fund help the ABYC members who represent us across North America and beyond.

AHOY "New" Boat Owners!
___________________________________________

Did you join the club or get a new boat in the last year or perhaps missed out on ABYC's 2014 New Boat Owners' Party?  All new-to-the-club boat owners are invited to sign up to be host boats in the ABYC New Boat Owners' Party on Sail Past Weekend:

Sunday, June 7, 2015
2:00 pm to 5:00 pm

This is a fun-filled, time-honoured tradition at our club!

How does it work?
As a registered host, you can simply invite members onto your boat for a tour and refreshments and/or you may want to do something more elaborate involving decorations, costumes, themes and games.  It doesn't matter whether you offer chips, dip and pop or host a full-scale luau, the point of this event is to have a lot of fun and get to know more ABYC members.

Prizes (gift certificates from the Rigging Shoppe) will be awarded for the Best-Dressed Crew; Best Decorations; Best-Dressed/Decorated Family Boat and Best Cocktail.

Depending on the number and location of boats that participate, we will stagger hosting times, for example, boats on: Red Dock - 2 to 3 pm.; > Green Dock -3 to 4 pm; Blue Dock - 4 to 5 pm.  We will keep you posted once we know who is registered.

If you have any questions, just send us an email or give us a call.

Please let us know if we can sign you up!

Happy Sails!

The Sign-up Lists for July cruises have been posted:

Niagara on the Lake Sailing Club - July 3, 4, 5
Hosts:    Paul Lefneski & Sue Hamilton (Chill'n)
Noreen & Wolfgang Stumpf (Quantum Leap)
Bike/Wine Tour Hosts: David Cloutier & Lynn DeSouza (Minerve)
It will not be known exactly how many boats NOLSC will be able to accommodate until closer to the cruise date. There was a high number of registrations on Monday and our hosts will work with NOLSC to get our registered boats a slip.  Paul will keep registrants informed of cruise developments.

Mimico Cruising Club - July 17 & 18
Hosts:    Mai & Brian Meret (Wadadli)
Robert Barrington & Petra Fischer (Dash)
This is another favourite destination club for ABYC members.  MCC is planning to bring in a large fleet of their boats so we need to 'empty' our dock slips to accommodate their boats.

Frenchman's Bay Yacht Club - July 24 & 25
Hosts:  Sue & Chris Hannah (Lion's Den)
Final club cruise 'east' to a Host Club.  The harbour was dredged last year and FBYC members with 6' draft are not reporting a problem accessing their club docks.  A 'wait list' is not expected.

NOTE:  All members registering by email should have received a return email to acknowledge that their July cruise registration request(s) by email was received and the member/boat added to the list.  If you did not receive a return email from [email protected] please contact the cruising captains: [email protected].  Mistakes can happen so please check the June and July sign-up lists to make sure that your registration request(s) got included on the correct cruise list(s).

June Cruise Update

Congratulations to Murray & Winnie Gainer and crew of Lively for their 2nd. in IRC1 in the the Susan Hood Race held last weekend.

For full results:   Susan Hood Race Results

If that result wasn't good enough, Murray & Winnie then raced in the year's first LOSHRS race on Sunday and took 1st in the DH-FS1 Division.  Umi Taka came 4th in the DH-FS 2 Division.

Since my last article, I have received no calls or emails about helping with the events for June.  This level of disinterest usually happens around the middle of August, when nobody cares any more.  To see it happening now is alarming, to say the least; and does not bode well for the season.  I'm already sounding like a broken record and the summer has just started....sigh.

Oh well, I'll keep begging, pleading and arm twisting - that's what they pay me the big bucks for.  If you get sick of me, you have nobody to blame but yourselves, folks. The best way to get rid of me is to volunteer!  All I'm asking is a bit of time -no season long  commitment - just a day or two of your time:

Single/Double Handed Race , Saturday, June 13 - URGENT

I'm still trying to find help for this event.  I need an RO/boat driver, someone who can time the start sequence and 1 other person.  Please let me know ASAP if you can help - I'd hate to see the event cancelled due to lack of support.

RCYC Open regatta, June 20 & 21

I need 1 person for the committee boat, as well as a mark layer/driver and 2 helpers.

Ontario Laser Masters/Great Lakes Masters, June 27 & 28

I need 2 more people for the committee boat, plus 2 mark layers/drivers and helpers, as well as a helper for Sunday only.

That's my list for June.  I need your help, so please let me know ASAP if you are able to do any of these events.
