Urgent request!

Ol' man winter (is that sexist? or age-ist? I can't tell anymore.) gave us a rough go this year, and we are behind on the jobs we need to finish.  We need to have more people help replace the patio stones by the sailing school - this Thursday (yes, tomorrow!) and this Saturday, next Thursday and the next Saturday for as many or as little hours as you can put in - it's entirely up to you how many.

Lot's of opportunities to help out, even if you can't make it on a Saturday.  Let's show Ol' man winter who's boss and get the club property back in shape!  First winter butt-kicking work party starts tomorrow!

Chili by the numbers...

_______________________________________________

What happens when you take 22 chili pots, add 27 boats and pour in 100 sailors?  You get the annual south wall cruise and Chili Cook-off!...and leftovers!

We want to thank the record number of participants who dared to compete and the members who cruised ALL the way across the harbour to taste, socialize and pass judgement on our incredible team of Chili Chefs.  It was great to see some of our new members join in the festivities too!

Special thanks to Harold for providing the music, Kim and Steph for graciously allowing their boat to be THE BOAT for the group picture, Terry and Katherine for providing ballots and tallying abilities, Big Kanu for arriving early and providing security, Allan and Karen for the awesome tent and to our photographers, Bruce, & Colleen, thanks for making us all look good. Extra special thanks goes to the shore crew for helping set up and tear down.

And finally a big shout out to our event sponsor Chair-man Mills for donating the rentals (no dirty dishes to clean)!

Congrats to our winner this year, Chris Pappas, whose flaming chili was unforgettable, especially on Sunday morning.

Well done everyone, and  keep on cruisin'... the summer is young and the winds are a blowin'!

Sailing School/ Sarah Seawall Repair

Thursday & Saturday May 14th & 16th

Some activities of the Sailing School have already started and the ABYC Regatta is 3 weekends away leaving two work party Saturdays to finish the wall for the mark boat, crash boat and racing boat and for dinghy accommodation.

That is not going to work. Not enough time!!!  We are initiating a mid week work party on Thursday (tomorrow) to move the project along.

Here are the jobs left to finish, in this approximate order. This Thursday we will attempt to begin the concrete work along with the 1st three items.  Saturday will be the intended "complete the concrete fill" day with constant deliveries from concrete suppliers.

  1. Complete the relaying of interlocking brick at the patio next to the dinghy ramp.
  2. Complete the compacting of the pea gravel and screenings in the new center section around the Sarah Shed.
  3. Finish removing excess fill and debris from the new wall excavation.
  4. Fill the empty space between the old rusty wall and the new steel wall with lean concrete.
  5. Install the new steel cap on the wall
  6. Attach the 6 X 6 beam rub-rail
  7. Attach the fender boards, cleats and safety ladders
  8. Repair and Return all boat racks to the area
  9. Return all boats to the area

A formidable amount of work in the short time left. Please join us when you have the time.

Well it's finally here - spring that is, or was that our summer?

Some annuals have been planted around the Club, including at our entranceway and by the incoming gate including the winch house.

As we all know, they will need to be watered regularly.  The yard boys have been asked to water them daily, but a little check on the soil would be appreciated.

If you find it dry, throw a bucket of water on to keep it healthy - PLEASE!  They are the Club's expenses, therefore, our money!

I have also seen members working tirelessly around the Club property, weeding and cleaning up some of our garden areas, a very big Thanks to you all.

Have a wonderful summer and don't forget to thank those Members who you see working around you, every little bit helps and remember, they are Members like yourselves...

Thanks again and happy sailing.

AHOY "New" Boat Owners!
___________________________________________

Did you join the club or get a new boat in the last year or perhaps missed out on ABYC's 2014 New Boat Owners' Party?  All new-to-the-club boat owners are invited to sign up to be host boats in the ABYC New Boat Owners' Party on Sail Past Weekend:

Sunday, June 7, 2015
2:00 pm to 5:00 pm

This is a fun-filled, time-honoured tradition at our club!

How does it work?
As a registered host, you can simply invite members onto your boat for a tour and refreshments and/or you may want to do something more elaborate involving decorations, costumes, themes and games.  It doesn't matter whether you offer chips, dip and pop or host a full-scale luau, the point of this event is to have a lot of fun and get to know more ABYC members.

Prizes (gift certificates from the Rigging Shoppe) will be awarded for the Best-Dressed Crew; Best Decorations; Best-Dressed/Decorated Family Boat and Best Cocktail.

Depending on the number and location of boats that participate, we will stagger hosting times, for example, boats on: Red Dock - 2 to 3 pm.; > Green Dock -3 to 4 pm; Blue Dock - 4 to 5 pm.  We will keep you posted once we know who is registered.

If you have any questions, just send us an email or give us a call.

Please let us know if we can sign you up!

Happy Sails!

Cradle Pads continued....

If your boat was stored near the Dinghy area last winter, please have a look at the pads in the photo below.  Could these be yours and you took the wrong ones home?  These pads are located next to the utility pole on the entrance to the dinghy area.  If you find that you did take the wrong pads, please contact the office.

GEORGE COYLES TUNE-UP
Our first weekend event of the year is now in the books, with 14 boats turning out for the race.  Thanks very much to those who made it happen - Mike and Lynda Robertson who, to my eternal gratitude, have run this event for many years and  Chris Osborne, a racing crew member ("Gypsy") who stepped-up  when help was needed.  Hopefully, others will follow his example throughout the season.

Our next event is our own ABYC Regatta, May 23 and 24.  I will need committee boat help for the coastal race on Saturday only,  and if necessary, people to help PCYC on Alpha course on both days. As well, I need mark boat crews for both days, to work with RCYC  and PCYC.

As always, please let me know ASAP if you are able and willing to pitch in.

_________________________________

This past Sunday the ABYC Junior Race and Senior Race Team's were rigged and ready to sail at noon, even if Mother Nature wouldn't cooperate and provide some wind.  This year we have 20 Optimist sailors on the Junior Team and 7 Laser/Laser Radial sailors on the Senior Team.  In May the group will be racing at TS&CC, Royal Hamilton, and RCYC.  Emily Nicoll returns in a new role this year as Head Racing Coach, and Stewart Bott returns as Head Instructor.

The race teams are almost full, but there is still room in the regular learn to sail program which runs in July and August, including a special one week session in the first week of July.
