THEY'RE IN AND FLOATING!

                                                                                                                                                           Photo - P. Caron
We had a lot of doubts about the weather going in to last weekend however the Weather gods came through very nicely.  Beautiful sunshine, slightly cool breeze and very cooperative boats made for a great launch once again.

Help Wanted for our On-the-Water Programs

Boats are in the water, and racing and cruising start in just 10 days!  The planning is done, and it's time to get out and enjoy ourselves.

We do need some help.  The following positions are open, and I'd be more than happy to give more details to anyone interested.  Time spent is countable as work hours:

Sailing Committee Chair
This involves organizing the Sailing Committee, chairing meetings, and sorting out occasional issues! Typically 2-5 hours a month in meetings and email (meetings are September to April).  I'd like to thank Brian Chapman for his work as our most recent Sailing Committee Chair!

Club Race Chairs
We have some very qualified Race Officers at ABYC, but they are overloaded doing our own regattas.  The reciprocal regattas we must do to return favours from other clubs, and all our evening and weekend races. Club races are lower stress, and are all conveniently located at the club!

We provide on the water training and mentorship, and pay for certification courses if desired.  (There's an Assistant Race Officer course this coming Sunday at Outer Harbour, advertised on Ontario Sailing's website, taught by our own Dave Steenbergen).

Some of us race only one night a week -- consider acting as Race Officer on the other night ... make a commitment for a series, and see how much your tactics can improve when you realize how the Race Officer is thinking!

Club Boat Stewards
We'd like to get three people, one for each of Sarah Ashbridge, Tricanna, and Feeling Good to act as an owner would, checking the boat, perhaps doing some of the minor work, and helping organize volunteers for larger non-expert projects.

We have a maintenance coordinator who keeps track of the to-dos and the ordering of material and some work, and getting professionals who handle the more complex work to assist.

Please reach out to me at rearcom@abyc.on.ca to inquire about or volunteer for one of these roles.

Happy Sailing!

Lakeshore Yacht Club Cruise
Saturday May 16 - Monday May 18

________________________________________________

It's the first long weekend of the season and the first ABYC cruise of more than 1 nm of the season too!

The Cruising Fleet is off to Lakeshore Yacht Club for a reciprocal cruise for the Victoria Day long weekend; three days and two nights.  LSYC is a self-help club and enjoys excellent member built facilities with floating docks, and is located in the Colonel Samuel Smith Park in Etobicoke.

Colonel Samuel Smith Park is located along a stretch of wooded shoreline in the Kipling and Lakeshore area and is home to a network of paths for walking, roller blading and biking.  The park also features a dog off-leash area and there is a children's play area by the club house.  Lots to do for a long weekend!

As is customary, ABYC will host a member gathering, including dinner on Saturday with the participants asked to help out with contributions of appetizers or desserts, plus your own beverages.

LSYC has no in-house F&B so it is bring your own for all other meals.  The communal clubhouse kitchen and BBQ areas are available for our use, as long as we leave them as we found them!  And while the outdoor BBQ patio is scenic and welcoming, and we hope to spend some quality time out there, LSYC has the added benefit of indoor eating space should the weather not co-operate. Anyone wishing to support the local businesses, Lake Shore Blvd. W. is not far away with a few small restaurants and a RABBA.

Reservations for the LSYC cruise are now open - see the notice in the Communications Room or call the office to reserve.

Looking forward to welcoming you!

What's better than launching?  "Nothing!!', I hear you all shouting.  Well I have one better: launching + wait for it... more work parties!!

Yes, you now have every opportunity to get your hours right at the beginning of the sailing season. "That's swell, (I can hear you faintly in the background), what can we do to contribute?"

This weekend we plan to get the patio stones by the sailing school back into place, and a lot of people are needed for this, we continue to have yard clean up and we need some people for green dock maintenance and for  helping out the Irish.

You knew there was a reason you joined a self-help club and this is it - lots of opportunities for everyone to chip in and help out! "Awesome" (you yell).

See you Saturday.

Sailing School Seawall Repair Saturday May 2

- The Home Stretch.

With the area levelled and packed during launch and the Sarah Shed replaced by the crane, we are left with the following tasks to complete.

This Saturday:

Continue to re-install the interlocking bricks at each end of the Sailing school area.

Fill the spaces between bricks with sand (and or screenings for big gaps) and tamping with the vibrator

(if delivered on time).   In the center section (between patios) install the sections of "Ecoraster" plastic grid ( a new product that supports weight of boats and racks etc but allows grass to grow up through for a park like area).

Once the grid is installed, spread the area with top soil and then plant grass seed.

Other tasks soon to be scheduled.

Fill the space between the old and new wall with lean concrete.

Install the SS wall metal cap, wooden rub rail & fender boards

Return (and repair) all boat racks and dinghies to the SS area.

See you Saturday,

Roger Marsh

Move your Dinghies
- Grant Dietrich, Dinghy Fleet Captain
____________________________________________________________________________________

Spring is here and the grass is starting to grow at Bay Belle Point.  The dinghy storage area has been

cleared of all winter cradles.

All of the dinghies need to be moved to the dinghy area over the next week.  Please move your own and a couple of others.

I will be coming out some nights this week after work to move some and could use help.

Also mark all equipment with your name and member number for identification.

Thank you

Lifting Masts
_______________________________

If you have a large mast, don't forget that we have a very handy cart/lifter to assist you with lifting and moving it.

As can be seen in the photo, it has a good up/down range and is capable of carrying most masts with only a few people to help.

You must be careful to push on the cart and not on the mast when moving it from the storage area to the crane.

In-Water Winter Lay-Up Committee
- Al Workman, Chair
____________________________________________________________________________________

The presentation from the In-Water Winter Lay-Up Committee is now on the ABYC Website.  All members are invited to review the information provided.  If you have any questions, comments or suggestions regarding implementation of this plan, please contact one of the committee members who are listed in the presentation, or alternatively contact the VC Marine Services who will pass on your comments.  Member's comments will be tabulated for Committee discussion and appropriate action.

Launch 2015

Irish Rose Mooring Tire
Adjustments (or Rose's Rules)

It is that most wonderful time of year again, launch and the start of another Sailing Season.  The harbour ice moved many of the mooring tires around this winter and we had several chains break.  Prior to launch Irish Rose replaced any moorings that were lost, however, if you find you are missing a tire, please contact the office, we will prioritize you.

If your tires are there, but in the wrong spot, please sign up on the Mooring Tire Adjustment sheet that will be on the board at the bottom of the stairs in the clubhouse after launch.

Please help us by completing the Adjustment Sheet and following Rose's Rules.

1. Provide both boat name & slip number (we don't know where every boat is and will not try to find it)

2. Indicate which tire you want moved and give us the direction and the distance (feet, we are old school) i.e. Port Tire - North East - 4ft.

3. Consider your neighbour's vessel when making your request, sometimes we will need to compromise between boats if they are not close in size

4. Please understand that we plan work in sections so we can be as efficient as possible and remember that we cannot take requests from you on the dock..

5. Please be patient, we will get to them as soon as possible and we will work until we are done but in the meantime please make do by tying to your winches, mid cleats or to your neighbour if appropriate.

Please Note:  Irish Rose is a great vessel for lifting tires chained to 600lb concrete blocks, but precision and accuracy was not part of the design criteria so if we get close, we have succeeded.

The Adjustment Sheets will be up until Victoria Day  weekend because after that, we want to enjoy our weekends too.

Missing Cradle Pads
____________________________________________________________________________________

After launch on Saturday my cradle pads were taken by someone.  My boat was located on Blue wall and the pads were near the blue tarp covering the sand for the wall repair.  There are 6 pads, the pads have green carpet, dark blue metal plates and the initials 'RM' on some of them (on the metal plates).

If someone finds they have them, please contact the office - 416-698-4498.  The office will then contact me.

Thanks,
Jeff Street (Expectations)
Attention!

My little AM/FM clock radio disappeared from Casa Ballman (where it has been for many weeks) sometime last week.  If you come across it, please return it to its place on the shelf in Casa Ballman.

Thank you,

Gus

RACING

New PHRF Event at ABYC Regatta
- Roger Van Vlack, Race Chairman
____________________________________________________________________________________

We are introducing a new event for PHRF racing at the ABYC Regatta.  We are going to have a one day event with a coastal race of approximately 20 miles.  This will be on Saturday, May 23rd with presentations after the race.  It is interesting that there are about 70 IRC boats registered on L/O and we get most of them to our Regatta and yet there are over 1700 PHRF boats registered on L/O and we can't even draw our own members.  The event will be open to double handed and fully crewed F/S and N/F/S.

Come out and have some fun while supporting your club register on the LORC site.

See you there.

Exciting New Racing Division
- Sailing Committee

_____________________________________________________________________________________

In an effort to continue to provide a vibrant and competitive racing program to our members, your Sailing Committee is ready to create a 3rd spinnaker division on Tuesday nights for the racers/cruisers with smaller boats.  The division would sail a shorter course than Division 2, meaning it would require a smaller crew and would create an exciting and competitive evening for many skippers.   We have a small core of members with those boats that have expressed interest and we are looking for a few more participants to get the division growing.  If you have an interest in participating please talk with any member of the "Sailing Committee" or come and talk to us.  You can also send an email to shaun.carey@rogers.com.

Race Mentor Program

- Sailing Committee

_____________________________________________________________________________________

If you have been thinking, this is the year to get your boat off the dock and on the race course the Sailing Committee has a solution for you.  We are introducing the ABYC Race Mentor Program for all those boat owners who are ready to enjoy a great evening of club racing and camaraderie.  We will match you with one of our experienced mentors for a race or two.  They will guide you through the race course, and impart some of the local knowledge that is so important to success.

If you would like to take advantage of this program or if you would like to apply to become a mentor, please talk to a member of the Sailing Committee or drop by the Race Registration desk at launch and have a conversation.  You can also send an email to shaun.carey@rogers.com.

Time for Recognition
Every Launch & Haulout is followed by many notes in Shjp2Shore thanking various people and groups for their work during launch or haulout.  This may seem repetitive to some, however, these notes are also the only means of recognizing the work done by many of our members who stepped up and took responsibility for a small part of the overall operation.  While many people leave after their boat is launched, these people remain on the job until launch or haulout is complete.  The success of launch or haulout is due in large part to the skill and dedication of the people in charge however, without the many volunteers taking on their small bit, things would not go as smoothly and safely for the rest of us.  These people smooth the way for all the people with "Hands on the Boat" or those who "Pull on the Rope".

So with all that said, here are a few "Thank You" notes from some grateful organizers:

CRANE LAUNCH 2015 - THANK YOU

The crane teams successfully launched 151 boats this year, in addition to assisting a power boat that had fallen out of its cradle on the railway and moving the Sailing School's mark storage shed onto its new foundations.  As always, many people contribute their efforts to make both launch and haulout a success, and I would like to thank all of them, and their teams.  Particular thanks are extended to the following individuals:  John Moody for organizing all the crews, equipment managers Claude Michaud and Robert St. Hilaire, large crane foreman Neil Payne, small crane foreman (Commodore) Bob Hedley, hydraulic trailer foreman Paul Brennan, signalmen Paul MacDonald, Bob Wilson, Jarrod Armstrong, Joe Simpson and Rob Barrington, cradle crew chiefs Kate Driscoll, Stewart Beak, and Bruce Hannah, dock foremen Alfie Nonnewitz, Terry Fagan and Doug Heldman, tractor driver Bernie Caron, forklift driver Chris Deeley, Carolyn Weckesser and the Dock Ladies, Rebecca Crumlish and the Boat Riders, and the Safety Committee.  Great appreciation is also extended to club manager Rennie Stobbs and yard bosun Greg for all of their assistance before and during launch.

Please have an enjoyable and safe 2015 sailing season,

Anthony Mirvish
Crane Committee Chairman

A Launch Thank You to Dock Ladies!

Please share my vote of gratitude to the members who worked diligently as part of the Dock Ladies Launch 2015 Team!

Our team is responsible for ensuring owners are dockside when their boat is launched or called to the rail yard, liaising with the tow boats and boat riders if necessary, and then assisting the owners to secure their boat at the docks.  And despite the brisk wind over the water, this team received every owner with a warm welcome! Mission accomplished!

Your Dock Lady Launch 2015 team: Wendy Babcock, Alison Booz, Kathy Bouey, Alexandra Brill, Moira Dunn, Catherine Fagan, Winnie Gainer, Cindy Gibbons, Lyne Gingras, Sylvia Grava, Joyce Guest, Sue Hamilton, Pat Hedley, Louise Kelly, Maxine Lewis, Alison Liddell, Victoria Littler, Corinne Lusty, Margot Mitchell, Eileen Newman, Denise Oulette, Amanda Parsons, Margaret Rintoul, Cindy Sampson, Sue Street, Noreen Stumpf, and Mary Lu Taylor. A big thank you to the team.

On behalf of the Dock Ladies, we wish everyone an amazing sailing season!

Fair winds.

Two Teams of Boat Riders - Thank You

Alison Brannen, Christy Buchanan, Dawn Carey, Don Sturgeon, Emily Sawolak, Heinz Gebers, John Beak, John Chittley, Julie Hughes, Martin Gibb (also tow boat), Mary Jacobs, René Marcoux, Rick Hayward, Rod McBirnie (also tow boat), Susan Hannah, Victor Schultheiss and Tim Hill - Leader Small Crane Team.

Another Launch and thank you to my team of Boat Riders for a job well done - as you know this day gives all volunteer members the opportunity to meet and greet new friends, pickup old friendships and checkout new boats for a big dream purchase in the future.

Also, if you have suggestions or observations how to improve our Boat Riders process for Launch and Haulout let me know.  As you know Launch is the reverse of Haulout and two teams are needed for small and large cranes.  At Haulout only one team is needed, but many boat riders are needed. Have a safe and wonderful sailing season.

Yours in Sailing,  Rebecca Crumlish, Coordinator Boat Riders - Launch and Haulout

Ladies-in-White

What a perfect Launch day.  The railway yard couldn't ask for better weather and another year has started without a hitch.  Please join me in thanking our tireless "Ladies-in-White" of the Tallow Crew, who once again did such a marvellous job of keeping things sliding smoothly on Saturday.  Kudos to Susan Hogan, Eleanor MacKay, Pat Chittley, Trixie Hoyer and a new club member, Melissa Mayhew.

Great work ladies.

Nancy Wilson

Tallow Crew Coordinator

A launch thank you!
- Linda DeRusha, Regalia Chair

Many of you are sporting new ABYC regalia and looking good for the start of sailing season thanks to Lyn DeSouza, Liz Heron, Penny McDonald and Diane Schulman, who worked to set up and staff the regalia sales table during launch.

If you missed us on launch day, regalia is always available by contacting me or the office.  We still have a few of the limited edition bonded fleece jackets for women and men.  We also have short sleeve and long sleeve dry fit shirts and many other items that are great for racing or cruising.

Thanks again ladies...your help was much appreciated!

Linda

ABYC Bricklayers!

While laying brick might not be part of the launch process, it was still a very busy and important activity last Saturday.  As most of our members know, the area occupied by the Sailing School was pretty much destroyed by the work done to repair the seawall last fall.  So on Saturday a group led by Roger Marsh got to work restoring the area.  While there is still a great deal of work to be done to finish the restoration, these people have certainly set the bar high for the next group (which will no doubt include many of the people from last Saturday).  It would be wonderful if more people joined in to complete this work in the next few weeks.  For those who do, you will have a tremendous sense of accomplishment.
