Hmmm..So who's getting this dock?

Repairs are being made to a dock that was damaged by ice over the past winter.  As the water level goes up and down, ice that builds up around the posts is capable of lifting the posts up from the bottom of the bay and this is the result.

Call to Action: Key Volunteer Roles Open at ABYC

Getting involved in the day to day operations of the club is part of what it means to be a member of ABYC.  We allow members to pay for their work contribution however, make no mistake about it we cannot function without members doing the lion share of the work around the club.
I initially got involved in the outdoor work at the club because I liked the idea of outdoor work versus indoors.  For some of you I am sure it's the other way around.  My partner Pat and I decided to take on the cruising program in our second year at the club.  I just kept working outdoors too.  Now, 25 years later we look back on our contribution with pride and with the hope that someday we will sail off into the sunset knowing that the club is in good shape, vibrant and a great place for future generations of members.

However, as Commodore I need some of the next generation leaders to step up now.  We have critical positions open:
  1. Sailing Committee Chair -  All on the water programs - Reports to Rear Commodore
  2. Membership Mentor Coordinator - Membership Committee member responsible for mentoring of 1st year members - Reports to Senior Vice Commodore and Membership Chair
  3. Harbour Master - Dock Assignments, Movements, Planning - Reports to VC Marine
  4. Harbour Maintenance (New Position)  - Sea Walls, Docks, Moorings - Reports to VC Marine
  5. Crane Yard Coordinator - Launch and Haulout planning and execution - Reports to VC Marine and Yard Master
Please contact the Vice Commodore responsible for the position that you are interested in considering.  I am also available to discuss what it's like taking on Board level roles.  Our Nomination Committee is already open for business for this fall's elections.

I would also like to thank all members who contribute so much to the club's successful operation.  At this time, I'd like to recognize and thank the following individuals who have and will likely again sometime in the future contribute in a leadership role:

1. Scott Elliott - Membership Committee - Succeeded by Bob Wilson. "Thanks Bob"
2. Cindy Sampson - Membership Committee Mentorship
3. Paul Lefneski - Harbour Master
4. Anthony Mirvish - Crane Coordinator
5. Brian Chapman - Sailing Committee

Sailing School Repair, Work Party

Saturday April 18th

We finally have some spring like weather and the Sailing School area is drying out rapidly. Our priority of course is to return this area back to its original useable state and in this case slightly improved with a little more interlocking.  Because the new steel wall is quite secure and stands by itself the area restoration is a higher priority which we will return to in a week or two.

We have rented a T190 Bobcat Skidsteer with tracks, a jumping jack and flat plate tamper which along with the tractor and a horde of willing hands with shovels and rakes we will aim to achieve a solid sloping bed of gravel and limestone ready for the interlocking re-installation.

We need to make significant progress to allow the sailing school to start on time and be ready for the ABYC first Regatta in several weeks time.  We understand that Launch is approaching fast BUT so is the need to restore this area ready for use.

See you Saturday,

Roger Marsh

Last week's all day work party was by all accounts (and by all accounts, I mean mine :) a smashing success.  We had over 100 people turn out to clean up the yards, work on the docks, strip and paint the Muskoka chairs, dig ditches and/or evacuate trenches, pile drive some posts, lower ladders and V poles, polish the brass fixtures in the clubhouse, clean the tables, clean the blue pipes and fans (using a gigantic new ladder), BBQs cleaned up, renovate the sailing school washrooms and attach member tire lines.  All of this plus we had the lovely Job Jar ladies out to answer Job Jar questions.  A terrific buffet lunch was served by Chef Paul and team.

Next Saturday (the 18th) we are having another work party to focus on fixing up the sailing school area by levelling and tamping the ground and replacing the patio bricks.  We have to hustle up and get this done before the sailing school opens - and next weekend will be taken up with launch.  We need a lot of people to help with this.

There are also a few painting/varnishing jobs still to be done (weather permitting) and yard clean up is always available as a job to do.  So if you have a few hours please come out and lend a hand.  Your contribution makes a real difference.  Remember (as per last year's Lego movie) - Everything is awesome!  Everything is cool when you're part of a team!

Last Thursday more than 50 members attended ABYC's Toonie Thursday.  Those present enjoyed the tales of John Gayford's 2500 mile transatlantic delivery aboard a Swan 59'.  For those present John certainly conveyed the importance of knowing your boat, crew and equipment.  Can you imagine not having a working autohelm crossing the Atlantic?  They did it and we heard all about it.

Thank you to those who continue to support our fundraising efforts in support of the Jr. Optimist Coach Boat.  During this series we have raised $784.25 with one more "special"  talk taking place on Thursday April 30th at 7pm.  We hope you can join us on April 30 as Former Canadian Olympic sailor John Curtis hosts..."for the love of sailing"

REMINDER TO BOAT OWNERS - PLEASE INSTALL YOUR DOCK AND STERN LINES BEFORE LAUNCH DAY NOT ON LAUNCH DAY - BOAT RIDERS ARE NEEDED TO ASSIST OTHER LAUNCHED BOAT OWNERS TO THEIR ASSIGNED DOCK LOCATION.

The purpose of the boat rider is to assist boat owners to get their boat to their dock safely.  Also, not to take other volunteers away from their work areas during Launch.

Here are some of the boat riders past observations for safety ... As safety is a big issue, it is important that the boat owners are at the launch site when their boat is launched.  Many boat owners did not ensure safety and their boat deck was not clear of all items i.e., hydro cables, lines etc.  This caused a safety issue at the crane areas for the volunteers working on removing the slings from the boat i.e., tripping over items on deck.  Boat owners, we are looking forward to your cooperation in 2015 and thank you from the boat riders.

Please install your mooring lines
- Carolyn Weckesser, Dock Ladies Coordinator

____________________________________________________________________

All members are reminded to install your mooring lines before Launch.  Please install both your dock lines and tire lines.  The club has outboards that you can borrow to help you install your mooring lines on your tires.  As well, remember to install copper keepers on all your mooring lines so they don't work loose during the season.

Having your dock and tire lines installed before Launch goes a long way to aiding the dock teams to help you secure your boat efficiently and safely.

Thank you for helping make our job safer!

Dock Lady Team has Opportunities
for New Recruits!

- Carolyn Weckesser, Dock Ladies Coordinator

____________________________________________________________________________________

The "Dock Lady" team is one part of a large and detailed launch operation.  (FYI, no offence to the guys, but this team has traditionally been crewed by our women members as many of the men are assigned to the heavily physical tasks, hence the name "Dock Lady".)

At launch, the primary Dock Lady team works on the docks to welcome, and assist boat owners to tie up in their slips for the first time in a new season.  The team also includes members stationed near the launching areas (two cranes and rail/mast crane) to announce your "splashdown" to ensure there is someone to greet you at your slip, and the public address system announcer.  This team is integral to making the launch (and in the fall the haul out), operations run smoothly, efficiently and safely.  Your cooperation with our team is greatly appreciated!

We are recruiting new members for this crew for 2015.  Anyone interested in joining our team, please contact me at ABYCDockLadies@gmail.com for additional details.  No technical skills are needed, just enthusiasm!

  Launch 2015 - Crane Yard
   - Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chairman
_____________________________________________________________________

LAUNCH 2015 - CRANE YARD

Launch this year will be on Saturday April 25th, starting at 8 AM for both the large and small cranes.  The early start is necessary in order to complete the launch in one day.  Sunday April 26th will be the back-up day in the event that weather or other circumstances pushes us beyond a one day launch.   No boats will be launched on Friday.   As was the case last fall, the hydraulic trailer boats will be brought to the cranes at intervals and staged in areas around the cranes until they are launched.

Prior to launch, boat centrelines will be marked on cradles that lack them (these consist of a yellow CL symbol with a vertical yellow line next to them), most likely on Wednesday April 22 or Thursday April 23rd.  Do not paint over the centreline marks because they are used when we lay out the cradles in the fall.  Keels will  be marked at the same time as cradles.   These are typically a small vertical yellow line or mark towards the aft end of the keel.  Unlike the centreline marks on the cradles, owners should feel free to paint out keel marks they think are incorrect, if more than one mark appears, or to paint their own mark based on where they think the boat should be sitting in the cradle.

It is also a very good idea to take advantage of your boat being out of the water to identify sling lifting locations by marking them on your deck, toe rails or just beneath the toe rails on the sides of the boat with stickers.  This saves much trouble and reduces the risk of accidental damage to the boat during haulout in the fall.

Additional notices about launch will appear in S2S as we get closer to launch. Members will be contacted about crane crew assignments in the next few weeks.

Anyone with questions about launch should direct them to me.

Shrink Wrap Plastic disposal
_____________________________________________

If your boat was shrink wrapped for the winter, please make sure that you dispose of the plastic properly.  There is a green bin in the crane yard to be used for this PLASTIC ONLY.

Any lumber associated with your cover should be taken to the regular bin located behind the Winch House.
