Busy Easter weekend for
ABYC members
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Although weekends at ABYC are usually busy, this past weekend proved to be especially busy with the usual work party crews on Saturday, boat owners attempting to work on their boats (in spite of the weather) both Saturday & Sunday, the ABYC Float in the annual Beaches Easter Parade on Sunday and a very successful Easter Brunch also on Sunday.

Whew...!!

Easter Parade

Once again ABYC had best foot forward at the 49th Annual Beaches Lions Club Easter Parade on Sunday.  Despite the cold temperatures and the light snow (we know it's been a long winter when we qualify the snow) the truck, boat and trailer made its way from the club to Queen St. East to get ready for the parade.  All of this was made possible by a great group of volunteers, namely;

Molly Asseltine,

Rick and Paula Humphrey,

Ron Partch,

Bill Surgenor

and my darling Tweetie Bird, Pat Chittley (owe you big time)!

Thank you all for your great support for without you it would not happen.

Also, thanks to Victoria, Greg and Chef Paul for your support with this great Beach Community event.

Cheers,

John Chittley

Easter Brunch
Our annual Easter Brunch was enjoyed by over 80 people last Sunday.  In addition to the delicious food, friendly greetings and smiles were provided by Chef Paul Aruda and his assistants Tony Inting and Braden Webb plus of course all our favourite servers.  Well done everyone!

Spring is in the air (well it is in the air somewhere I am sure, just maybe not in the GTA)!  We had a fairly good response to the job list this week.  I continue to pray for good weather (no rain, 10C or better, am I asking too much?).  Yes, there is is still time to sign up in the Job Jar under Spring All Day Work Party, or send an email to abycworkparty@hotmail.com

The all day work party is scheduled for this Saturday April 11 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.  Please come up to the club house when you get here and let me know that you have arrived.

As for the wall repairs, we are still waiting for the area to dry out so we can level out and pack ready to start replacing and expanding the interlock areas.  Next Saturday April 18 we will be filling in the space between the old and new wall with concrete - this is a really big job and we will need lots of help for this.

Here is the list of jobs available (remember to bringing gardening equipment and/or clippers if you sign for those jobs):

On the water from noon Monday, June 22 until noon Friday, June 26, 2015Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club and Humber Sailing & Power Boating Centre are pleased to partner in offering a Sail Canada (CYA) Intermediate Cruising course at ABYC.

The content of the Intermediate Cruising Standard is extensive and includes items such as:

          • Extended passage making
          • Making landfall
          • Dead reckoning
          • Chart work and entering unknown harbours

This course allows the student to apply the skills from their Basic Cruising, VHF, Coastal Navigation and Electronic Navigation experience in a live-aboard setting.  The five day course is designed to have fun, learn, vacation and gain valuable sailing experience.  This is all done on the beautiful waters of Lake Ontario.

Space is limited, so act soon!!!

LAUNCH INFORMATION

Mooring Tire Lines
- Paul Lefneski, Harbourmaster
_____________________________________________________________________

I am planning to have a team install mooring lines on the tires at the all-day work party this Saturday.  If you would like them to attach your lines to the tires for you, please bring them to the club on Saturday morning.  You are responsible for attaching your own lines on the dock.

Thanks,

Dock Lady Team has Opportunities
for New Recruits!

- Carolyn Weckesser, Dock Ladies Coordinator

____________________________________________________________________________________

The "Dock Lady" team is one part of a large and detailed launch operation.  (FYI, no offence to the guys, but this team has traditionally been crewed by our women members as many of the men are assigned to the heavily physical tasks, hence the name "Dock Lady".)

At launch, the primary Dock Lady team works on the docks to welcome, and assist boat owners to tie up in their slips for the first time in a new season.  The team also includes members stationed near the launching areas (two cranes and rail/mast crane) to announce your "splashdown" to ensure there is someone to greet you at your slip, and the public address system announcer.  This team is integral to making the launch (and in the fall the haul out), operations run smoothly, efficiently and safely.  Your cooperation with our team is greatly appreciated!

We are recruiting new members for this crew for 2015.  Anyone interested in joining our team, please contact me at ABYCDockLadies@gmail.com for additional details.  No technical skills are needed, just enthusiasm!

  Launch 2015 - Crane Yard
   - Anthony Mirvish, Crane Committee Chairman
_____________________________________________________________________

LAUNCH 2015 - CRANE YARD

Launch this year will be on Saturday April 25th, starting at 8 AM for both the large and small cranes.  The early start is necessary in order to complete the launch in one day.  Sunday April 26th will be the back-up day in the event that weather or other circumstances pushes us beyond a one day launch.   No boats will be launched on Friday.   As was the case last fall, the hydraulic trailer boats will be brought to the cranes at intervals and staged in areas around the cranes until they are launched.

Prior to launch, boat centrelines will be marked on cradles that lack them (these consist of a yellow CL symbol with a vertical yellow line next to them), most likely on Wednesday April 22 or Thursday April 23rd.  Do not paint over the centreline marks because they are used when we lay out the cradles in the fall.  Keels will  be marked at the same time as cradles.   These are typically a small vertical yellow line or mark towards the aft end of the keel.  Unlike the centreline marks on the cradles, owners should feel free to paint out keel marks they think are incorrect, if more than one mark appears, or to paint their own mark based on where they think the boat should be sitting in the cradle.

It is also a very good idea to take advantage of your boat being out of the water to identify sling lifting locations by marking them on your deck, toe rails or just beneath the toe rails on the sides of the boat with stickers.  This saves much trouble and reduces the risk of accidental damage to the boat during haulout in the fall.

Additional notices about launch will appear in S2S as we get closer to launch. Members will be contacted about crane crew assignments in the next few weeks.

Anyone with questions about launch should direct them to me.

Shrink Wrap Plastic disposal
_____________________________________________

If your boat was shrink wrapped for the winter, please make sure that you dispose of the plastic properly.  There is a green bin in the crane yard to be used for this PLASTIC ONLY.

Any lumber associated with your cover should be taken to the regular bin located behind the Winch House.
