It seems that our kingdom has become trapped in perpetual winter.
Has anyone seen Olaf the snowman?

Introducing our new VC-Finance,
Kevin Forward
______________________________________________________________________

Hi, I'm Kevin Forward and am pleased to serve as Interim VC Finance.  I was asked to provide some of my professional background to give comfort that the Club's finances are not completely at risk.   I have a Finance degree from Memorial University in Newfoundland and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario.  I have worked in the banking industry for over 15 years, first with CIBC in commercial banking and internal consulting, and now with BMO in risk management.  In between I spent some years with Ernst & Young where I worked with companies to improve their risk management and internal control practices, and to improve processes their the Accounting & Finance function.  Together with the ABYC Finance Committee, we are working hard to build on the strong finances of the Club and to support Club priorities.

I'm originally from Newfoundland but have lived in Toronto since 2000.  I joined ABYC I believe in 2006 as a Senior Member and own the 1972 Ericson called Kitchen Party.  I am recently married to Denise Ouellette and together we enjoy living in the Upper Beaches.  When I am not sailing or maintaining Kitchen Party, I like to play guitar just loudly enough to drown out my bad singing.

See you in the Clubhouse and before we know it, back on the water.

SEA WALL REPAIR COMMITTEE
REVIEW OF PROGRESS/NEXT STEPS

We have had one fall season of project progress using a new system of wall repair.  We would like to include all opinions from all participants in this project in order to plan for future implementation of the next area of repair which must be larger and must be completed more efficiently.

Any interested participants are welcome to attend a project review meeting on

Wednesday March 11 at 7:pm.

If you cannot attend and have suggestions for improvement please email me at [email protected] ahead of time.

Lake Ontario Ice cover on February 21:  52.7%

Lake Ontario cover on February 21:  52.7 per cent

2014 maximum:  61.5 per cent

Lake Ontario is deeper than its neighbour, Lake Erie.  It loses heat slower, and boasts stronger underwater currents, and as such takes longer to ice up and typically maxes out at a lower level.  On February 21, the lake was at 52.7 per cent ice coverage, slightly ahead of Lake Michigan but way more than the 13 per cent of this time last year.  (Editors' Note:  Much of what appears to be ice cover in the satellite photo is actually clouds

But it was way higher last week, above 80 per cent on Wednesday, according to NOAA. In fact, observers say the lake's ice levels fluctuate more than other lakes.  That's because new ice can form quickly, and can be broken up just as rapidly by winds whipping up the lake waters into rough waves.  All of the lakes are susceptible to this, but Lake Ontario's slow rate of heat loss makes the process more effective.

Anecdotal evidence suggests the lake has, in fact, totally frozen over in the past, but the official rankings say 85 per cent is the most it's ever reached since records began in 1973, the lowest maximum of all the lakes.

SEA WALL REPAIR SPRING 2015

And the cold wave continues unabated delaying the continuation of the seawall repair along the Sailing School wall.  In all likelihood the spring thaw, which will arrive eventually, will also be delayed by the blanket coverage of snow and ice and the depth of freezing in the ground.

It is unlikely that we will have the time to drive new steel along the remaining section of Sailing School wall around to the steel ramp but we will prepare for it.  Should I be wrong and the sun starts beaming down next week warming and melting the encrusted ground surface, we will be ready to:

Fill the space between the old and new steel wall (120 feet) with lean concrete and top with a cap.

Finish the backfill for anchor & tieback trenches, level and pack gravel.

Add limestone screenings, level and pack

Replace all interlocking and probably expand the area of interlocking using existing stone on site.

Replace seawall header beams and re-install fender boards

Rebuild & return all dinghy racks and dinghies and the Sailing committee shed.

Watch this space for news of spring Seawall repair.

Last week we included a photo of our summer patio and we received many positive comments regarding that enjoyable summer activity.  So with this week's "ICE" theme, plus this unrelenting winter testing the limit our endurance, we thought we should include a beautiful summer view of our clubhouse.

Feel better?
