  NICE DAY AT THE BEACH!
With the temperature "soaring" to - 4C last Friday, these Ducks & Geese took advantage of the weather and spent the day enjoying one of our bubbler holes and catching up on their sleep.

Mentoring Program

If you were at the January AGM you will have heard that this year we want to have a robust mentoring program for our new members to rely on as they join us in their first year.  In order to do that we need Senior Members who are willing to act as mentors.  A strong mentoring program can make all the difference in the world to the experience and safety of a new member.

I also need some help from people who are interested in helping us develop the mentoring program itself and those who would like to sit on the committee responsible for the program.

There are work hours available for both mentoring and for the committee work.  Please contact me directly if you are willing to participate in either.

Fifty Shades of Grey snow.  Yep, that's what we have at the club
.

Not really much we can do at work parties with wall repairs until the snow is gone and the earth warms up a bit.  Lots of jobs to do such as concrete pouring, back-filling the trenches, and interlocking brick replacement are just waiting to happen.

There are some jobs being done around the club on Saturday mornings, the ever-lovin' Bubbler Boys are out, and the sauve deck maintenance teams have made some fine new saw horses.  But the big wall repair jobs need to wait, so maybe this weekend is all about romance and blind folding your loved one with grey sail ties (if you are not sure of that last reference, um, well, just skip it and you won't get injured)

Happy Valentines Day to all.

Author Jane Fairburn will be discussing her book,
Along The Shore, Rediscovering Toronto's Waterfront Heritage

This is a "must have" book for anyone with even the slightest interest in the area in which we sail and enjoy our recreational activities.

Organized in four sections, The Scarborough Shore, The Beach, The Island and The Lakeshore, the book covers both geologic and human history of these four areas.  It is superbly researched and well written.  Bound in large soft cover, the book is a bargain price wise.

I strongly recommend to all our members - don't miss this one.

Basic Cruising Course for Adults

The ABYC Keelboat Course is a beginner level, internationally recognized Sail Canada program offered in conjunction with Humber College.  Classes; which are scheduled at various times during the week and on weekends, provide both off- and on-water instruction and are designed to give students the necessary skills to act as both skipper and crew on a sailboat of up to 35 feet in length, in moderate weather conditions.  The course is taught on a 31 ft. keelboat (Hunter) and is ideal for new sailors.

The fee includes a one-year Introductory Associate Membership at ABYC with all privileges.

For more information, class schedules and the registration form see http://abyc.on.ca/abyc-sailing-school/sailing-school-keelboat-program/

The Learn to Sail Open House is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, so pass that on.

Classes, especially those early in the season, fill fast.  So tell your friends to register now to avoid being disappointed.

And once your friends graduate, they are eligible for the introductory Co-Op program, a great way to keep sailing an ABYC boat for the whole summer.

Tell your friends they can learn to sail at ABYC this summer  (Of course members are welcome too.)

And it is definitely time to think about summer!

ABYC Winter
_____________________________________________________________________________________

After the relatively benign weather we had in January, the month of February is making up for it with what seems to be a daily fresh blanket of snow.  Combined with the cold temperature, ABYC looks quite nice!
