Managing our Staff

Last year on a busy summer weekend at the Club I was in a very bad mood. From the cloud in my head caused by the bad mood I reacted to something one of the Bosun's did in a very negative way.  I am Senior Vice Commodore and I was mad, so I told him.

Then I went to Rennie and told him what I had done.  Then I went back to the Bosun and I apologized to him.  As it turned out he was exhausted, he too had had a rather challenging day and my snapping at him did not help anything.  We shook hands and have a very nice relationship now.

It is NOT my job to tell any of the staff off, not ever...except Rennie.  Rennie reports directly to me as Senior Vice Commodore.  Every staff member reports to Rennie.  If I have a problem with a staff member it is incumbent on me to respect the lines of command and take my issue to Rennie and leave it to him to deal with.

Imagine working for nearly 500 people, each of whom feels entitled to discipline you.  It would be hell.  That is what it can be like working for a Club like ABYC.  There is no question that sometimes I think I can do things better than someone else but the fact is my opinion is not really all that relevant in many cases; the fact is someone else is doing the job and I should just keep my nose out of it.  If I really have a problem I know where to go with it.

It was a good lesson for me and I share it with you because I know that sometimes the urge to tell off the staff is really big.  Try not to.  If you have an issue please take it to Rennie.  If you have an issue that you do not feel Rennie has dealt with please bring it to me and I will talk to Rennie about it and get back to you.  If Rennie isn't doing his job managing the staff that is for me to deal with and I will.

Job Jar

The tallies are in for work hours for 2014 and if you don't have the requisite hours registered you will receive a bill from the office for the unworked hours.

If you feel that you have been billed in error (because I have already given you an exemption for example) please email me at srvc@abyc.on.ca or call me at 416 651 7769 and I will sort you out.  Getting it right every time is impossible so do not be offended if you receive a bill you don't think you should have received.
