  ADDRESS TO A HAGGIS
Over a 100 members and guests attended Celtic Night last Saturday.  The evening opened with a very robust "Address to a Haggis" which everyone found entertaining, followed by a hearty meal then very enjoyable music by one of our favourite bands - Poor Angus!

Annual January General Meeting
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Our annual January General Meeting was held on Monday, January 26, 2015.

Commodore Bob Hedley's opening remarks focused on the operations for the upcoming 2015 year (The Year of Infrastructure) and the major repair projects that will be undertaken this year.  He announced that following the resignation of Axel Noriega as VC-Finance the Board has appointed Senior Member Kevin Forward as the new VC-Finance.

Board Members gave their reports including Erik Dullerud, VC-Marine who gave a detailed report that focused on the seawall repairs.  He provided a progress report on the portion currently being worked on as well as the upcoming work plan and the alternatives regarding the volunteer labour that will be needed.

The budget portion of the meeting was presented by Kevin Forward, VC-Finance and included Capital Budget items, the Operational Budget and the 2015 proposed fee structure.  All items were passed by the membership present.

It was also announced that a Committee was being formed to look into the possibility of storing some boats in the water over the winter.  This committee will be chaired by Senior Member Al Workman.

As was formally announced during Monday's Budget Meeting, Al Workman will be heading up a committee to gather information pursuant to implementing in-water boat storage on a trial basis for next winter (2015/16).  He will be assisted by former Harbourmaster, Paul Lefneski.  Following several winters of assessing how other clubs approach the subject, Al presented a report to the Board last year outlining the major issues involved.  At the moment, the first step for Al and Paul is to assemble a list of interested boat owners in advance of an information meeting to be held in early February.  Conceptually, the program would be implemented on a zero cost/zero risk basis insofar as ABYC's liabilities and financial exposure are concerned.  Those participating in the trial program will be expected to cover their own insurance requirements, equipment and operating costs, the last of which is primarily the cost of electricity for ice eaters.

All those who are interested are encouraged to contact Al Workman by e-mail at:  [email protected]

Author Jane Fairburn will be discussing her book,
Along The Shore, Rediscovering Toronto's Waterfront Heritage

This is a "must have" book for anyone with even the slightest interest in the area in which we sail and enjoy our recreational activities.

Organized in four sections, The Scarborough Shore, The Beach, The Island and The Lakeshore, the book covers both geologic and human history of these four areas.  It is superbly researched and well written.  Bound in large soft cover, the book is a bargain price wise.

I strongly recommend to all our members - don't miss this one.

We are a relaxed but dedicated team of members who help administer the Job Jar Software.  We have flexible hours and you can work from home.

You should be keen to help the club optimize it's work force by engaging members in our work opportunities; this means you should know or be willing to learn about the breadth of work that it takes to run our club.

Be computer literate, actually more than literate.  You should enjoy working with software and be happy to share that knowledge with our members.

Have patience and enjoy teaching.  Part of the success of our software is our team's reputation of doing whatever it takes to get our members to embrace the software.  That means repeatedly answering the same questions, encouraging members to use the more advanced functions and being able to diffuse criticism of the software with humour and charm (being able to differentiate between software shortcomings and user errors).
