Pre-Budget Meeting
_______________________________________________________________________

The annual pre-budget meeting was held on Monday evening and was attended by a substantial number of members.  The proposed Capital and Operational budgets were presented by Senior Member Kevin Forward, who along with the other members of the Finance Committee have stepped in to assist in the absence of an elected VC-Finance.

There was a lot of discussion of both the Capital and operational items, especially the financing of the repairs to our seawalls.  All present were given the opportunity to discuss all revenue and expenditures items in detail.  Board Members were present and available to discuss items pertaining to their individual budgets.

The final budget will be presented for passage by the membership at next week's General Meeting (January 26, 7:00pm).

2014 Cruising Awards
- Bruce Hannah
_____________________________________________________________________________________

On Friday evening, the ABYC cruisers gathered at the club for the 2014 Cruising Awards presentation. This was the best attended awards presentation with 85 members, guests and friends seated for an evening of fine dining, presentations and good laughs. This is a testament to the growing popularity of cruising on Lake Ontario.

The evening started with a slide presentation showing the highlights of the cruising season. After dinner was served, "Pat Sajak" (aka Chris Pappas) and "Vanna White" (aka Jean Gap) opened the awards presentation with a review of the 2014 Season and a preview of the cruising schedule for 2015. Bruce Hannah then presented the following awards to the winners:

  • Harbour Master's Hat  -           Free At Last                 Stan and Jean Gap
  • Ports of Call -                         Perseverance                Bob and Pat Hedley
  • Hans Ballman Trophy -            Latis                            Carolyn & Ralph Wekessere
  • Jack Shirt Trophy -                  Perseverance                Bob and Pat Hedley
  • Ron Mitchell Trophy -              Kondor II                       Ed Wilson
  • Daysailing Award                    Wind Lass                    Trixie Hoyer and

Cruising Fleet Captain's Discretionary Award - Mary and Chris Pappas (Portofino)

The evening then continued with the flag presentations for cruises attended and distance flags followed by the Cruising Hosts sweaters. During the course of the presentation some of the recipients were asked trivia questions "With an Edge" and if answered correctly received a gift bag.  There were a few embarrassing moments that had everyone in stitches.

Thanks go out to Chris Pappas, Jean Gap and Nancy Ogden for organizing a great evening and Claude Tremblay as the evening's photographer.

Contrast in lake ice conditions
_____________________________________________________________________________________

The 2 NASA satellite photographs below were taken on January 15, 2015.  They clearly show the amount of ice that has accumulated on Lake Erie (and a portion of Lake Huron) while there is very little ice on Lake Ontario - only a small amount at the eastern end.  Even the Finger Lakes in the state of New York are not frozen.

Offshore Series

Your Sailing Committee is very pleased to have arranged for Brent Hughes and the  LOOR organizers to be on hand January 29th, 7pm to inform our members about the great events LO 300, LOSHR's and the Susan Hood.  The jewel of the evening will be a presentation by Brent Hughes detailing his story about taking a rather older vintage boat to the podium.

This is all about performance; and this presentation will offer good and solid insight to both the racer and cruiser alike.  Regardless of the type of sailing you enjoy, all sailors like to get the most out of their boats.

Hope all of you will attend this special talk.   Should you wish any other details, please don't hesitate to contact myself (your Sailing Committee Chair)  brian@uksailmakers.com
