Work Hours

Just a reminder and a couple of changes of policy from me this week:

First the reminder is that you must have all of your work hours registered in the Job Jar by the end of January.  We will begin billing people in February and unless you have made arrangements for an exemption from me (for serious cause) by the end of the month you will receive a bill from the office that you will be expected to pay.

First policy change:  we will begin doing spot audits of the hours in the Job Jar this year.  It has come to light that some people may not actually be doing the hours they are claiming.  If this is true it is completely unacceptable and we will take measures to make sure it doesn't happen again this year.

Mark and I used to do the minimum number of hours of work at the Club.  We are always involved in volunteer work elsewhere and we never really thought about how much work is actually done by volunteers at ABYC.  Well, my stint on the board has clarified things for me and I can assure you that without the incredible number of hours of work done by some members of the club (who receive NO advantage for doing the time) our club costs would be astronomical.  We have lots of members who do literally hundreds of hours of work for us all, for free, year after year.  And these are people who don't just sign up and then stand around, they are the ones who get in and do the work.  The 20-hour work-or-pay standard is low given how many hours are needed to run this place so please take your volunteer responsibilities seriously, it makes a big difference to us all.

Finally, we will be locking the buildings when the staff leaves from now on.  There was an incident recently where the outside door to the men's washroom was left open for a number of hours overnight (someone had come in to use the facilities in the middle of the night and had failed to ensure the door was properly closed) and we had damage due to freezing.  There should be no reason for anyone to be using our facilities overnight during the winter so the keypad entry system will be disabled overnight until we get closer to launch.  The same will apply to access to Casa Ballman.

Toonie Thursdays for 2015 kicked off with a fine presentation by Don Ferguson on Boat Deliveries.  Don is known to many of us here at ABYC as he used to race with our J24 Fleet and he also served for several years as Manager of Queen City Yacht Club.

About 45 members and guests turned out for a very informative talk on the good and bad things that can happen with boat deliveries.  Don had some great pictures that he and Captain Dave Mathews put together for the presentation.

The evening raised $190 for the new Opti Coach Boat where we are directing our funds to this year.  We raised $100 in a raffle for 6 pairs of Boat Show tickets, a Wind Sock and an Ontario Sailing license plate holder.  Thank you to Bob Hedley and the Boat Show, Don Ferguson, Petra Fischer and Dave Lewis for the donations.  Additionally, the Toonie Thursday collection netted an additional $90.

All in all a good evening.

Our next presentation is February 12 with Author Jane Fairburn.

Your Sailing Committee is very pleased to have arranged Brent Hughes and the  LOOR organizers on hand January 29th, 7pm to inform our members about the great events LO 300, LOSHR's and the Susan Hood.  The jewel of the evening will be a presentation by Brent Hughes detailing his story about taking a rather older vintage boat to the podium.

This is all about performance and will offer good and solid insight to both the racer and cruiser alike. Regardless of the type of sailing you enjoy, all sailors like to get the most out of their boats.

Hope all of you will attend this special talk.   Should you wish any other details, please don't hesitate to contact myself (your Sailing Committee Chair)  brian@uksailmakers.com

Two-Part Public Meeting (January 24 and 26) for Toronto Port Authority's Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Extension of Billy Bishop Airport Runway

Two-Part Public Meeting January 24 and 26

The Toronto Port Authority (TPA) is undertaking an environmental assessment of the proposed introduction of jet aircraft and extension of the main runway at the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (BBTCA).

Based on a review of background information and participant feedback to date, the TPA has developed a preliminary list of the potential effects of the proposal and the proposed methods for assessing impacts.

The volume and complexity of this information requires that the upcoming public meeting take place in two parts. The preliminary list of potential effects and assessment methods will be presented at an all-day open house, drop-in session on January 24, with public feedback welcomed at a follow-up workshop on January 26.
