Welcome to our year-end edition of Ship2Shore.

We are looking back at the year 2014 and recalling many of the events that took place in and around ABYC.  To help us do this, we are including many of the weekly photographs from the past 51 editions of Ship2Shore as well as a photograph of our harbour taken on the 1st. day of each month of 2014.  We are also including messages from the members of our Board of Directors regarding where we've been in the past year and where we are heading in 2015.

We wish all our Ship2Shore readers
a happy, healthy and prosperous 2015

I always take time as the year closes to reflect and count my blessings.  It's been a wonderful year for our Club and everyone involved in making it a place to enjoy with family and friends.  We have so many people who engage in sailing, boating on the water, and through the many social activities that occur at the club.  These people contribute in so many different ways to make ABYC a great place to spend time with fellow members and family.

I was recently at the club just after a snowfall as the sun was setting.  What a magnificent panorama across the bay, over the west yard where boats sit silently waiting for spring and then over to the sun setting in the west with the city looking like it is reaching for the sky.  The two staff members present were busy cleaning but they took a moment to greet me and ask if they could get me anything.  They already had the specials on the board even though the snowfall had resulted in Toonie Thursday being cancelled.  Gee, I was really looking forward to the evening's speaker and conversation with fellow members.  I left saying, "Enjoy yourselves, you've got the place ready for a great evening".

I am particularly grateful for the support and hard work of my fellow board members, Paul, Elizabeth, Bob, Mike, Erik and Axel.  There are many members beyond the Board starting with our Board Secretary Ian Koster, Committee Chairs and members who contribute well beyond the club minimum to ensure that the club functions well day in day out.  Our staff; Rennie, Lidia and Roxanne in the office, Food and Beverage, Paul, Nino, Brandon, Brennan, Tony, Katie, Cheryl, Jennifer, Jesse, Carly, Greg and fellow bosuns help make our experience at the club comfortable with good food, drink and service.

Most of all though, I am grateful that our 7 year old grandson Adam had his first sailing lessons at our club this past summer where he was well coached and cared for.  Thank you Jeff and all the sailing school staff.  I know because every day he would get up and say, I am going sailing today!

I wish everyone a safe, Happy Holiday Season and I look forward to an even more exciting and fun year in 2015!

See you at the Levee on January 1st!

Bob Hedley

Toonie Thursday
On January 9th., a crowd of 70+ people attended Toonie Thursday to hear to Damian Foxall speak about his adventures on board Groupama in the Volvo Round The World Race.

We were treated to many photographs as well as videos of the race plus Damian spoke briefly about his role as ambassador for the Canadian Wildlife Foundation.

Pile Driver Down
The very severe weather that we experienced in December & January resulted in our Pile Driver getting flooded and partially sinking.  It took several tries and eventually Stephen Trevitt and his crew successfully drained the water from the tanks and were soon back in action driving piles in the Dry Sail area.

Cruising Awards Night
The annual Cruising Awards night was held on January 17, 2013.  As always, a friendly, informal crowd of cruisers gathered to revisit the 2013 cruising season and to receive the cruising awards.

21 flags were awarded for cruising attendance with eleven boats attending 5 or more cruises.
5 flags were awarded to cruisers clocking 500 - 999 nm and one flag was awarded to an intrepid cruiser with more than 1000 nm on Lake Ontario (Amarone II (Bruce Hannah & Claude Tremblay)).

Amarone II (Bruce Hannah & Claude Tremblay)
was the big trophy winner for the year going home with The Harbourmaster's Hat Trophy, The Ports of Call Trophy and The Jack Shirt Trophy.

The Hans Ballman Trophy was awarded to Satori (Hazel Wood and Dan Gregory), the Ed Wilson Trophy was awarded to Jester (Colin Andrews & Barb Baniuk), and the Ron Mitchell Trophy was awarded to Sunkissed (John Waller & Nina Schmidt).

Cold Water Safety Training
On January 18th., ABYC conducted cold water safety training.  Falling in the water at this time of year is very dangerous and our Safety Committee felt that we would all benefit from having some of our members who work on or near the water trained in how to deal with someone who fell in the water.

Celtic Night
With a great band (Poor Angus) playing, another hugely successful Celtic Night was held on January 25th.  It was impossible not to have a good time and the Scotch Tasting was enjoyable too!

Happy New Year

I am coming in to the home stretch in my term at Senior Vice Commodore and I finally have a good understanding of my job.  As I come into this home stretch I want to focus my time on membership issues.  As SrVC I am responsible for membership at the board table and over the past couple of months I have begun looking in earnest at it.

Our entire club flourishes or fails on the back of membership.  Our finances are fully dependent on our member numbers and most of the work at the club is done by our members (I need to say here that the vast majority of the work done at the club is done by a very small number of people - to whom we all owe huge gratitude).  Our capacity as a club to attract and retain members is critical to our success.  Over the past seven years our Senior member numbers have not fluctuated too much but we have about 25% fewer Associate members.  A downward direction in numbers is not what we want to see.

Associates don't have boats.  They don't have to do work hours.  Many of us Senior members don't think about Associates but I have to tell you, we should.  The only category of membership that we really have room to grow is our Associate member category.  Most Senior members have boats and our harbour is finite.  Associate members though, fill our bar and restaurant and contribute hugely to the environment at the club.

Frankly we have to do a much better job at attracting and retaining Associate members.  We want to offer our Associate members something of real value.  It is to the advantage of every single Senior member in this club to have a flourishing Associate category of membership.  They too pay fees, and we can expand their number hugely, putting more laughter in our bar and restaurant and more money in our coffers.  Associate members also often become Senior members and they are usually an easy sell because they already know the culture at the Club.  Many of our Associates are also hugely dedicated volunteers.

So this year it is my aim to work with my committees to promote Associate membership both within the club and outside.  Within the club we must be more serious about providing our Associates with opportunities to join us on our boats, they are at a yacht club for a reason and we Senior members with boats can offer them something really special.  We will be developing events this year to help integrate those Associates who want it into the boating part of being at the club - and we will be asking Senior members to step forward and participate in these events.  This is a good way to meet new people and frankly it is in our own best interest to do so.

We have to take seriously our obligation to create a club where Associates are valued and listened to:  we need to know what they want from the Club and we need to do what we can to provide them with it.  They too are an integral part of the success of our club.

We will also be developing a serious mentoring program for new club members with boats.  I am aiming at setting up a new committee for the mentoring program and it will be charged with taking our existing rather fragmented program and developing it into some that makes the first year of membership for our new members a really good experience.

Remember, these issues should matter to all of us.  We share this Club and its facilities and we must maintain and repair it - we ALL pay for those repairs.  Sharing the burden with a larger group of people makes good sense all around.  And happy members make for a happier place to be.

I hope you will all join Mark and I in inviting Associates to share in the pleasure of sailing next season (on your own boats though, not on ours...).

I wish you all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Elizabeth Sloss

Senior Vice Commodore

Toonie Thursday
Rules expert and renowned sail maker Butch Ulmer gave a presentation on the Racing Rules of Sailing  as part of the ABYC "Toonie Thursday" speaking series.

After the presentation, Butch said  "I enjoyed the audience and I hope that they enjoyed the presentation as much as I enjoyed them" and "BTW Brian - thank you and the Yacht Club for your gesture of the fleece jacket.  I will wear it proudly.  Best Regards, Butch"

Spring makes an appearance
After a long, difficult winter, Spring made a surprise appearance on the first weekend of April.  Our members were quick to pounce on the opportunity to remove tarps and start getting bottoms ready for launch.  With the temperature of +12°C, it was also a good day for just wandering around, getting reacquainted with people we had not seen for months.

Tough Winter for mooring tires
The very cold 2014 winter was hard on the docks and the mooring tires.  The Irish Rose crew surveyed the harbour and it is safe to say that most tires moved during the winter.   Also, several posts for finger docks were lifted almost completely off the bottom.  It took a lot of time to correct the docks as well as moving many of the mooring tires back to their proper locations.

2014 was a good year on the water at ABYC

We sailed:  club races, cruises, family races, bell buoy races, regattas, and the LO600.  Getting your boat, crew, and the ABYC burgee, around the lake twice in a row is an accomplishment anyone can be proud of.  When you see them, congratulate Murray and Winnie Gainer, whose accomplishments inside and outside our club won them the Ashbridge Trophy in 2014.

We hosted:  our usual season-starting ABYC Open, then LYRA, a few years ahead of our decennial schedule.  Once again, Roger van Vlack did a great job organizing the teams that set up both these events.  His ongoing contribution in this area won him the Commodore's Award, our most prestigious award to volunteers.  When you see him, thank him for making sure our racing visitors keep coming back to ABYC, and talking about the great time they had at ABYC.

We learned:  some learned to sail for the first time, some just learned to sail better.  Some taught, perhaps the best way we can share our joy of sailing with others.  Congratulate yourself, if you shared the love of sailing with someone new in 2014.

A final thank-you too all those who helped with our on-the-water programs in 2014.  Thousands of volunteer hours go into planning and execution of racing, cruising, and teaching.  Pat yourselves on the back!

2015 planning is already well under way, with a draft calendar being tweaked and tuned for our own activities, incoming cruises, and LORC events.  As always, there are many, MANY opportunities to join your fellow ABYC sailors on the water.  If you felt that you didn't get on the water enough in 2014 ... you're right.  We all know how a bad day on the water compares to a good day at the office, and I think you know what your New Years resolution should be!

South Wall Cruise

Members walked to the south wall and got a ride back, or they got a ride over and walked back to the club. They brought their kids, their dogs, and they brought chili.  People piled on friend's boats and about fifteen plus or minus hardy skippers left their dock the Saturday after launch and travelled the distance to tie up or raft off at the South Wall.  What a glorious spring day, with nary a cloud in the sky.

The Chili Cook Off entrees were devoured by the 50 some people in the hungry shore party with all offerings being given 5 stars.  Special nods go to "Moonwind's" Don Jackson and his entry "Mexicali Rose" followed by "Grace's" Tom Warrilow and Stacey and their "Made at ABYC" special.  "Jaftica's" Don Sturgeon and Debbie Dockray took home the "It Ain't Chili" prize for their Jerk Chicken (yes, there were a few chickens harmed in the making of their recipe).

Saying farewell to Stephen Trevitt
Although the evening race scheduled for May 27 had been cancelled due to weather (surprise!), a large crowd stayed in the clubhouse to say goodbye to departing Senior Member Stephen Trevitt who left us for greener pastures.  Many good things were said about Stephen although it probably wasn't necessary - his many deeds speak for themselves.  Stephen leaves very large shoes to fill, both for his racing prowess as well as his club contributions and he will be missed.  At the ABYC Open Regatta, Stephen received a well deserved standing ovation at the presentations, as he will be missed not only by the ABYC racing fraternity, but also by all of those who have raced against him in inter-club racing over the years.  But even more than the outstanding racing record Stephen has achieved while racing under the ABYC burgee, he will be missed by all members of ABYC for his outstanding volunteer service, including rebuilding of the sea walls over many winters.

ABYC Open Regatta - Weekend of May 24-25
ABYC hosted our annual One Design and LORC Open Regatta on the weekend of May 24-25, and despite the appalling weather we had experienced during the spring, the sun gods shone and there was wind as well as sunshine and no fog.

ABYC boats fared very well. In IRC2, Stephen Trevitt sailed Crime Scene to second place in his final race before leaving us. Murray Gainer and the Lively crew were fifth, and Larry Harrison and the Merlin2 crew were sixth, also in IRC2.

Sona, sailed by Calum Semple, dominated the IRC 3 fleet, with five firsts, a second and a fourth place finish.  Congratulations to the the Sona team!

On Bravo course, Eli Gershman and his crew aboard Black Swan managed an 8th place in the J24 fleet. Also competing were Eriks Kalvins in Black Pearl, Tim Connolly in Humidor and Wes Shera and the crew of Excalibur.

The T-Bird fleet was small, but competitive, with only 7 points separating first from last.  Congratulations to David Holmes and the Rattle ya Dags crew for eking out a one point victory over Looney Tunes with the last hurrah for Drew Robertson and the Full On team taking third place.  Although the PHRF Jib and Main fleet was won by a boat from another club, Martin Gibb and the Constor team were second with Hazel Wood and Dan Gregory third in Satori.

All in all, the weather was great, race committee work was excellent and this was another successfully organized Regatta by Roger van Vlack.  A big shout out of thanks to all the volunteers who made the weekend so special.

Optimists go to Hamilton
Also on the May 24th. weekend, ABYC's Championship Fleet Optimist sailors ventured out to the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club to compete in the Lilac Festival Regatta.

This was the team's first regatta of the season and they were fortunate that the wind conditions were exactly those that we had been practicing in this spring - light winds, around 6-8 knots.  As a bonus it was a warm, sunny weekend!  As always, the RHYC race committee ran a great regatta and made us feel very welcome.

I wish you and yours the best of the holidays and a very prosperous 2015!

2014 was a challenging year in many respects.  I am glad that I had the opportunity to work closely with our enthusiastic board in developing a stronger club.  I admire the integrity and ability of this Board to deliver and manage the operations of the Club and the members' profound dedication and determination, even in the face of adversity.  This is what I call commitment and we should all be grateful that some of our members continue to put in the hours that they do to keep our Club running.  I thank the Board for its support on the financial portfolio.

As we end the year, the club remains operationally strong, with the ability to weather the storm that has been brewing for the past 20 years.  The infrastructure requirements of the club will be felt in the next few years, and the Board will have to make some tough decisions and ask the membership to support these decisions.  The membership has enjoyed the use of this infrastructure for many years, and now it will be time for all of us to contribute towards maintaining and restoring the Club to its golden years.  This will include strategic financial and operational changes that will help develop a clearer path to adapt to the changing demographics of the City and the needs and desires of members, existing and prospective.

I want to thank the Board, Rennie and Lidia and the Finance Committee for their support over the past 2.5 years.  We are in strong position because of the decisions and actions taken by the current and past boards and my respective predecessors.  My admiration and salutations go to those members who had to make tough decisions from which we all have benefited.

As many of you know, I resigned my role as Vice-Commodore Financial Services due to personal and professional circumstances.  I did so with a heavy heart and after much consideration with my family.  I leave the position knowing that the Club will be able to adapt to its new reality with a good and strong position to face its short and medium term challenges.

Thank you all for the support over the past 2.5 years.  I look forward to getting over the hump that I am facing over the next couple of months and get back to the reason that we are here  -  for sailing!

Wishing you all the best of the holiday and the best sailing season ever in 2015!

Sail Past
The ABYC members and guests who attended the 2014 Sail Past will have something special to remember - one of the best weather days for this event that we have had in many years.

The official portion of Sail Past began with the blessing of the fleet by Leigh Olsen, Fleet Chaplain.  This was followed by the presentation of burgees and the always moving flag raising ceremony.

Warm temperature and glorious sunshine from morning to night; along with a light to no breeze, forced most skippers to "Motor Past".  This didn't matter to most of us, however Commodore Bob Hedley and his party spent approximately 2 hours watching the parade of boats go by.

Once the lake portion of the day was over, our Flag Officers did the annual harbour tour and with a goal of raising at least $1,000. for the Corinthian Fund, they came back on shore with $1,350.  Well done to all our members who gave so generously!

39 boats turned out for the Canada Day long weekend cruise to PCYC.  On Saturday the weather cooperated and it turned out to be a wonderful sunny but comfortable day.  It was a nice sail for some with some assisted motoring and everyone reached their destination.  Although there were 3 incoming cruises we managed to reserve our usual BBQ location and set up our dining chairs very close to the playground for the kids and a comfortable spot for our 20 or so canine friends.

Mast-Up Winter Storage suspended
After reviewing the priority needs for Sea Wall rebuilding, the Board decided that in the interest of safety and storage optimization, the club will not be able to continue the Mast Up storage trial program during the major Sea Wall rebuilding.  The need to address the repairs urgently needed along White Wall will necessitate significant yard storage changes for 2014-15.  Anthony Mirvish, our Crane Yard Coordinator who has planned the boat spacing for many years now and has worked closely with those leading the trial program provided those members who have stored mast up with a more detailed explanation of the challenges he now faces planning haulout and storage.  Once the Sea Walls that are high priority have been rebuilt then we will reconsider the mast up storage program.

One Saturday morning this past November, as I prepared to leave for a work party at the club, I told my family I was excited, because that day we were starting actual work on our Seawall Replacement Project.  My son said, "Wait... what??  Haven't you been working on that all year?  I thought you'd be finishing, not starting!"  I clarified to him that up until then, it was only the planning part of the work!  And yes, it took that long!

At last year's January General Meeting, I announced that I was resurrecting the Seawall Planning Committee and needed volunteers.  That evening several people, including Roger Marsh and Erik Dullerud, stepped forward and said they knew what was needed, and that they could see it through.  Soon after, we had a room full of very qualified and motivated members meeting regularly.  Today, it is very satisfying to see all that planning come together in the form of materials and volunteers as the first stretch of our new seawalls take shape.

At the upcoming January General Meeting, I will again be making a request for volunteers because it is time to refresh our club's "Vision Document".  This is a report that captures feedback from our members regarding their vision for our club.  The current copy of that document can be found in the Members Area of our website - "ABYC Vision Report 2011" in the section titled "Committee Notes and Notices".  We need a committee to assist with the collection and interpretation of that feedback.   I can't wait, not only to see the results of the final product, but also to enjoy the collaboration as it all comes together.

In the meantime, I hope you are all maximizing quality time with family and friends over this holiday time.  I look forward to the good things in store for our club in 2015 and beyond.

Happy New Year.

Bob Brew

Summerfest 2014
Our annual club party in Bay Belle Park went off without a hitch again this year with perfect summer weather and just enough wind to make the Family Race a success.

It all started with a "Yard Sail" on the clubhouse patio which was well supplied with past and future treasures. The first Family Race of the season followed shortly thereafter with an impressive 17 boats participating. Following the race there was a flurry of activity at Bay Belle Point where the kids enjoyed the Face Painter and numerous games and activities.  Chef Paul and his team outdid themselves again this year with a delicious barbeque and salads.  And finally, the day was capped off with another fine performance from our own Weathered Legs who played well into the late evening.

Senior Race Team:  ABYC was well represented at Steerers' and Four Sisters regattas.  The senior team arrived at Port Credit Yacht Club to compete in Steerers' on Thursday July 17th - with all members of the team putting forth an excellent effort.  Congratulations to Adam Gillies who finished 2nd overall in Laser Full Rig fleet, just missing first by a single point.  With the end of Steerers', the team's focus shifted to the Four Sisters regatta.  All racers, once again,  showed promising things for the future of ABYC.  Congratulations to Adam Gillies earning another spot on the podium in the Laser Full Rig fleet, finishing 2nd overall.  Also congratulations to Sam Bonin and Chloe Carr for earning a spot on the podium with a 3rd place finish in the 29er fleet.

Junior Race Team:  10 members of the Junior Race Team also went to Port Credit Yacht Club to participate in the Steerer's Regatta.  In addition, 15 of ABYC's Junior Racers competed on the Optimist course at Four Sisters regatta. Congratulations to Martin Staadecker, our top ABYC sailor who placed 8th. overall out of 35 boats, and to Oliver van Rossem who won the award for 2nd. place Blue Fleet out of 17 sailors, aged 11 to 12.

Cruise to Tuscarora Yacht Club

A hardy group of 13 boats and one "Land Yacht" enjoyed an always very friendly club and great facilities.  Our USA hosts were extremely helpful and even loaned us a car to go food shopping in Wilson for our party needs.  They gave us full access to their kitchen, with two stoves, pots and dishes.

The group included 8 new cruisers who experienced their first cruise and apparently enjoyed every second of it.  Some of the crowd were racers, who were pleasantly surprised at how relaxing sailing can be.

On the way back and a few miles out (back in Canadian water), some of our travellers were greeted by the RCMP (in their large and powerful dinghy) performing Customs Spot Checks on the water.   Apparently the officers were very friendly and cooperative.

LYRA 2014
The racing event of 2014 for ABYC was the hosting of LYRA Week.  Although the weather was not very cooperative with very light winds, our members were extremely cooperative, both in vacating their docks to make room for the competitors as well as to volunteer to run races etc.

Regatta Chair Roger Van Vlack said "The number of volunteers between race management and regatta management is around the 100 mark and I need to thank all of you.  There are far too many to name by name but they know who they are and I want everyone to know I appreciate your contributions.  This event doesn't work without this tremendous effort."

During the past year, we sadly bade adieu to 4 of our members:

Life Member Hugh Wyers

LYRA 2014
ABYC's hosting of the LYRA Racing Week is best summarized by Wendy Loat -

Many people spent a lot of time over the last two years planning LYRA - no one more so than Roger Van Vlack, Regatta Chair, and Dave Steenbergen, Principal Race Officer.  Unfortunately, the wind gods decided to boycott, so it was a good thing the entertainment and food was good so no one complained.  It was also a good thing that only one race was required for a regatta, as that is all a couple of the fleets managed to get in.

ABYC boats fared very well.
Sam Robbins and the Double Time crew won the Jib and Main Division I, with Dan Gregory and Hazel Wood and the gang, second in SatoriThird was David Cloutier in Minerve. Shaun Carey's, Whiplash was third in the Smaller Jib and Main Division.

Paul McDonald and the Vertigone gang were dominant in the PHRF Flying Sails division, winning all four of their races.  Cliff Walkington was first overall in the R Class aboard Gypsy, and Kent Paisley's Proudest Monkey placed first winning the Etchells Canadians with crew Mike Hren.

Calum Semple and his Sona crew placed first in the 10R division and third overall in IRC 3, while Bart Smit's Nautical Symphony placed first in the J80 fleet.  Winston Beckett and the crew of Fortitude were second in IRC 4.

When all of the results, including the Freeman, were stewed in the pot, the overall winners were:
LYRA IRC Champion - Jim McGuinness, our buddy from Highland Yacht Club, and Youngstown Yacht Club placed first in the Team Challenge, just ahead of ABYC's team.

Cruise to Youngstown YC
While most of ABYC was whooping it up at LYRA a small contingent of the cruising fleet headed over to Youngstown for the long weekend.  Although small in size for an AB's cruise, it was a very talented, witty and exceptionally well-read group in attendance (as self-described by the group during Saturday's cocktail hour).  Some of the group arrived Friday, while the rest followed on Saturday.  Saturday's dinner consisted of beef tenderloin (hat tip to Nancy & Harvey for taking us to Costco), twice-baked potatoes, Caesar salad, a grilled veggie salad followed by a batch of Liz's brownies.

All in all a  great weekend.

ABYC at CORK
A team of ABYC volunteers and sailors headed up the 401 to Kingston for the beginning of CORK, the Opti Internationals.  Approximately 110 boats competed, and ABYC sailors fared very well.  Race committee volunteers included Paul Brennan, Ian Gow and Nick Bailey, as well as honorary member Pat Lymburner.

Our top sailor was Oliver van Rossem, who finished 26th overall (of 87 boats) and 10th in the Blue Fleet (11& 12 year olds).  Martin Staadecker placed 32nd overall and 20th in the Red Fleet (13-15).  Hunter DeJean placed 35th overall, (22nd in Red) but her moment of glory was placing FIRST in one of the races.  She led the race from start to finish, which must have been a thrill for her dad Jeff, watching from his Laser.  The only other Opti dad watching from a Laser was Oliver van Rossem's dad.  Hunter was the fourth best Canadian female.

Paul Staadecker was 45th overall and 19th in Blue Fleet.  Annabel Gravely was 71st overall (31st in Red) and Danny Assimakopoulos was 76th overall and 6th in the White fleet (10 and under).  Placing just behind Danny was Paul Wortman in 78th and 7th place respectively.

Special mention was made of the loaning of the Jack Cameron by ABYC.  As many of you know, Jack was Chief Judge at CORK for over 20 years, so it is especially fitting that the boat that bears his name was prominent at CORK.

Wet cruise to RCYC
The cruise to RCYC started off with 27 boats signed up for this popular destination.  Two  weeks prior to the cruise we received a note from RCYC stating that they could only take 10 vessels due to their Royal Invitational Regatta.  The cruise featured strong winds and a cold Saturday, and then rain for the better part of the afternoon; however, that didn't dampen spirits - It was great to see 30 people in their foul weather gear huddled under 3 umbrellas having a great time.  At the end of the meal, there was nothing left.

ABYC Senior Race Team at CORK
The ABYC Senior Race team attended Cork IInternational, which was held in Kingston, from August 11-14.  The first day of racing went well for racers across all fleets- however the following days showed just how windy Kingston can get.  With heavy winds, and not much experience in the rough conditions, the racers put forth an excellent effort to sail through the weather.

A Salute to Our Marvelous Volunteers

At the end of one year and the beginning of a new, it is time to reflect on the past and look forward to what is yet to come.  Mostly, we all like to see a future filled with success, without problems and difficulties.  But we know from experience that we will meet challenges along the way.

Since being elected as your VC Marine Services in late September this year it has become clearer to me than ever how important our many volunteers are to the functioning of our Club.  Without them our Club would simply not exist.

Over the next few years our Club faces considerable challenges related to the much needed renewal of our aging infrastructure, the largest and most costly being the repair/rebuild of our crumbling seawalls.  The good news is that we have made a successful start on this project, and true to form, many of our committed and marvellous volunteers show up every Saturday morning, a few even on weekdays, and literally put their shoulders to the wheel.  I know that, if we can sustain the kind of enthusiasm shown by the participants this far, we will complete this formidable project at huge savings for the Club.

In addition to our 'infrastructure renewal crews' many other volunteers are involved in ensuring that our club runs smoothly on so many levels, in fact there are too many to mention individually.  However, I would like to mention the various harbour work crews that do such a stellar job maintaining the docks as well as the 'Bubbler Crew' that help ensuring that our fixed docks are still serviceable after the ravages of winter.  Likewise, the volunteers working on various yard projects and those keeping our grounds and gardens neat and tidy, all deserve our deep gratitude.

I salute all our hardworking volunteers!  At the same time I challenge those members, who 'have been thinking of joining' one of the work groups, to make up their mind to actually join one of the work teams in 2015.  I think you will find it a rewarding experience!

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the season to you all!

And happy volunteering in 2015!

Erik Dullerud,

VC Marine

Chilly Whitby Cruise September 20
The forecast was not good and the distance daunting so late in the season but the nine boats and their crew mastered the 25 to 30 knot gusts and 6 to 8 foot waves with skill and perseverance to the far haven of Whitby on the Saturday and the return to A.B.Y.C. on the Sunday.  A slightly larger contingent from W.Y.C. also made the exchange, passing in the froth of Frenchman's Bay.

Perhaps a closer destination would be a better arrangement for future late date cruises but everyone enjoyed their time together.

Well it must be Christmas, looking at the TV listings today I see that IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE was on twice today.  I opted for the latest Tom Clancy novel.  I have truly enjoyed this past year at the club.  We have come a long way in some areas, others we have a way to go but it is all going the correct way, forward.

The biggest project that my department has had this year was the new front foyer.  Although the entrance is technically on the back of the club we really had to give it a facelift.  My predecessor, Cindy Sampson, got this ball rolling and I am glad she did.  Not only is it much more attractive, it has cut out the draft in the hallway and cut down on our heating bills.  Thank you Mike Robertson and Harvey Harman for seeing this through.  The next project this gruesome twosome is tackling is the Junior Sailing School washrooms. The men's has been gutted to allow the studs to dry out before we start the rebuild.  The men's will get a floor sloped to the drain for easier cleaning, fresh wall treatments and better ventilation.  The ladies will get painted, a transom window for better ventilation and better lighting.  This is a project that has been long overdue.

Regalia, headed by Linda DeRusha has had a good year.  During launch and haulout we managed to pare down some of the old inventory and introduce some new styles and products all using the ABYC style guide.  These can be seen in the front foyer and bought from the office or ordered online.

After almost six years, Howard and Celia are stepping down from the Entertainment Committee.  Each year they and their committee members raised the bar on all club functions.  Thanks guys for all of your work on behalf of the club.  Enjoy your retirement, well Howard at least; Celia will be working with the newly formed MarComm committee.  More on this later in this article.  A group that is rarely seen or heard of is the Archive Committee.  Headed by Mel Trottier, this group is tasked with collecting, cataloging and digitizing all of our historical documents and pictures.  They are a year and a half into this and have a way to go yet.  Keep an eye on S2S, Geoff Huck has been putting in some historical trivia questions.  Prizes can be won!

Earlier I mentioned the new MarComm committee.  This is the amalgamation of the Marketing and Communications Committees.  Marketing had come under Senior Vice and Communications was under Member Services.  Elizabeth and I had many conversations about this and decided to merge the two.  It is co-chaired by Geoff Huck and Bill Surgenor.  The objective of this group is to be a "tool box" for all other committees to help them to get their message across to either the membership or groups outside of the club.  The aim is that all groups are using the club style guide in advertising and communicating a common message.  An example of this is the Save Our Walls "campaign".  The seawall group approached the MarComm group for help in getting their message across and getting members interested in helping with the project.  It was a success, 5 members joined the team working on the walls.  All committees are encouraged to contact us for any help

The next couple of years are going to be a challenge for the club.  Not only seawalls but we do have other infrastructure issues.  As you all know we had a water main break this past summer and we are living on borrowed time before it could happen again, so after launch it will be replaced.  These are the things we are aware of; hopefully we will not have more surprises.  These repairs are going to take a lot of time, resources and of course funding to complete.  The Board is working hard to find ways to fund these projects and I am sure it will be a hot topic of discussion at the January budget meetings.

Yes we have our issues (what club doesn't?) but what we also have a great club with an active cruising and racing program, fun year-round social programs, vibrant sail training programs (keelboat and junior's) and all of this in a parkland setting with easy access to the lake.

It is with these thoughts in mind that the MarComm committee has come up with a new slogan for the club, "Your Home On The Water, In The City".

Lastly, I would like to thank our S2S Editors, Bernie and Patty Caron who, without fail, send out this publication at 1:00am (or thereabouts) every Wednesday morning.  I always enjoy reading it with my morning coffee.

I wish you all the best of the season and look forward to seeing you all on at the Levee on January 1st.

Mike Macdonald

p.s. Other than the Commodore, the first person who can tell me what MarComm stands for (other than ABYC's definition) will be treated to something in the restaurant.  Send your answer to vcmember@abyc.on.ca

ABYC 2014 Racing Awards Night

The 2014 Racing Awards Night was held on Saturday, November 22 with the usual large turnout of racing skippers and crews.  The fact that all the tickets were sold out weeks prior attests to the popularity of this event.  Fifty-one trophies and awards were handed out after dinner to our well deserving racing members and volunteers (who make it all happen).  Congratulations to all!

Among the many trophies and awards presented, 4 of the most prestigious were the following:

The Ashbridge Trophy:  To Murray & Winnie Gainer on Lively

This is the most prestigious sailing award in the club.  It is awarded to the skipper who, while  flying the ABYC burgee, brings the most prestige upon the club through accomplishments in either, or a combination of, club, and/or local and/provincial, and/or national, and/or international competition.

The Stapleton Trophy:  To Calum Semple on Sona

Awarded annually to the best overall boat in club racing; and, that has also distinguished herself in racing events outside the club.

The Fauvette Trophy:  To Adam Gillis

Junior Sailor of the Year.  Awarded to the most proficient junior sailor or the junior sailor who best represents the Club in outside events.

The Commodore's Award:  To Roger Van Vlack

This award is presented by the Commodore for best representing ABYC in any branch of yachting, inside or outside the club.

A look way, way back!
As a final treat, we thought we would take you back much further than the year 2014.  Some of our newer members might not know that before we relocated to our present site in 1977, ABYC was located in the north end of Ashbridge's Bay.  Below is a photograph showing our club in the 1950s.  ABYC was much smaller then and all boats were on moorings.  The photograph is taken from Lakeshore Blvd.

This brings us to the end of our look at all of the activities that ABYC members participated in during 2014.  We hope you enjoyed looking back with us.

As in previous years, we give the last word to our Past Commodore.

It is with gratitude that I look back on 2014 and feel that much was accomplished by your Board during the year. The Board during that time worked tirelessly on your behalf and they are to be commended for their commitment to our Club.

Continuing in the position of Past Commodore, I welcome your feedback and promise to pass on to the Board any ideas, possible solutions and concerns that may come my way.  I ask you to value the members of the Board for their willingness to step forward on your behalf.  They deserve your support, your counsel, and your creative solutions.

I hope that you, as members, take advantage of all that ABYC offers.  Seek out opportunities to be involved, strengthen your ties with your fellow members, make every effort to resolve issues with honour, make our new members feel welcomed, offer solutions, continue to spread the good word about our Club around the Lake.

To my ABYC friends, and on behalf of Paula and me, I wish you a happy and fruitful New Year.

Rick Humphrey
