FOCUS IS ON WALL REPAIR

While many of our members are busy doing the crucial weekly maintenance of our property and equipment, the focus these days is on the ongoing wall repairs.  A milestone was reached this weekend when the first anchor of the new wall was installed and the trenches were back filled.

"Must Do's" before Year End

December already.  It would be frightening how quickly the time passes except at this time of the year it simply means we will be on our boats before we know it....

Please, please, please make certain you register your work hours in the JobJar.  Remember YOU are responsible for registering them.  It is not up to any of the rest of us to make sure you have your work hours registered and I don't have much leeway to accommodate you if you haven't done your part so expect to pay if you don't register.

If you intend to resign your membership in the club you MUST do it before the 31st of December.  I do not have the authority to make exceptions to this rule:  Membership runs for the year from January 1 to December 31.  If you are going to resign, do so as soon as you can to prevent the shock of bills for 2015 membership fees.

I am going to go back to the issue of discipline one last time to finish it off.

I have had some interesting correspondence from a couple of members concerned about the fairness and the appropriateness of our discipline process.  For what it is worth this is what I think:

Discipline is a horrible job in any context, and at a club it is even worse which is why it often isn't undertaken.  The process we have for discipline, which I outlined two weeks ago is a very simple one.  Once a complaint is lodged with the SrVC and she or he decides to take it to a discipline committee it is then up to the discipline committee to manage the process.  I have convened four committees this year, three of which have had to go through the entire process and I have to say that I am really proud of our Club and its process.  Each of the committees was comprised of senior members and each one of those committee members took their responsibility incredibly seriously.  They did their homework and they truly understood both the purpose of the disciplinary process and what was at stake both for the member and for the club.  Working with the committees has made my job so much easier and I have total confidence in the system as a result of the way the senior members on the committees undertook their responsibility.

There is no question that different people will have different opinions on whether the outcome of a disciplinary process was a good or a bad decision.  Unfortunately it is not easy to see what a decision should be until you sit down and look at all the facts and consider all angles, and even when you do there may be differing opinions.  That is life.  But I would say that we are doing very well overall.

Of course, the best thing would be if I went through the next nine months with no discipline issues coming to me...

What he really, really wants....

On Saturday I had a chance to interview Roger Marsh to find out how the Seawall Repair project is going and what he would like to see happen next.

I opened with  'So, tell me what you want, what you really, really want'.  And he replied, 'I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really, want.  I wanna, I wanna zigazig ha'.   No..wait.. that's a Spice Girls song.

What he really said is that the wall repair project is progressing along nicely.  Several of the jobs have already been completed; i.e. the waler jobs (construction and installation) are all done.  The sheets have all been driven, in fact, instead of being one of the most labourious and time-consuming jobs when we do it ourselves, it went very quickly and safely with the contractor!  I said 'that's genius', to which Roger replied, 'Thanks!'

'What's up next?' I asked.  'Well for the next three Saturdays - the 5th, the 13th and the19th, we really need a large number of people to help evacuate trenches' he replied. (I've been strictly forbidden from mentioning ditch digging again).  In addition to this big job, team leader Ralph will be leading the anchor installations, Larry and Adam leading the tie-back installation, and Ken is leading the concrete mixing/pouring team.  All can use a hand to get the job done.

'How about these mid-week jobs, do they actually happen?' I asked.  Roger mulled it over and replied, 'Yes, sometimes.  What we need mid-week is someone who can drive the tractor to dig d.. ah evacuate trenches, with a couple of people available to help'.  If anyone is available mid-week, please send your email address to abycworkparty@hotmail.com.

And finally, this Saturday we also need a few people to help with some yard clean up, including the storage of steel and the work rafts.

Save the wall

SEAWALL REPAIR:  December 6th.

The new concrete has arrived and Ken Hare and his crew have produced our first run of lean concrete for compaction around the anchors.

Our first Anchor/3 Tieback installation is complete (with pictures elsewhere in this issue) and the area refilled, compacted and somewhat levelled.  We need to repeat this same operation 6 more times, 2 installations per week to complete this stage to secure the wall.  Given the debris in the soil, old tiebacks, old rebar and lampposts that have to be cut and cleared, it takes many hands to complete.

We have a back hoe operator for Thursday so now we need several people to be on site to cut and clear the old concrete and other debris that we encounter as we dig along the edge of the walls.  We have cutters and grinders for steel and concrete, chains and cables for lifting and now we need a little muscle power to make it all work.  Our intention is to have 6 tieback trenches and two anchor trenches ready for installation for Saturday morning.  We hope to be finished with the digging on Thursday but may need a little extra time Friday.  If you have time available either day please let me know and I will make up a schedule.

If this works to speed up the overall progress we will repeat this for two more weeks, hopefully before the frost gets deep into the ground.

Email Roger Marsh or Sue Hamilton if you can contribute some midweek time.

Here is a list of work teams that will be active Dec. 6th and will continue till further notice.  Watch this space for notice of other work team starts as work progresses.

Members are responsible for recording their hours and making sure that the information in the Job Jar is up to date.

Please check the Job Jar and make sure that your account is accurate. Members need to work at least 20 hours to fulfill their obligation to the club.  If you still need to contribute hours consider working on the Seawall Repair project.  The Seawall Repair project is operating on December 6th and 12th and possibly the 19th and could use extra bodies.

If you have questions about the Job Jar please contact Michelle at 416-889-9420

Seawall Repairs
- What's involved?
_____________________________________

So what's involved in repairing our existing seawalls?  Lots of labour!  For those not involved in this project, the following is a brief explanation of the process.

A few weeks ago we featured a short video that shows the driving of the steel sheets that will be the new wall.  (Video of sheet driving)  All of the sheets in the area currently being repaired are now in place.

The next step is to dig trenches that are 42 inches deep and extend back 20 feet from the wall with much of the work done using a backhoe.  The trench must then be completed by manual digging to ensure the proper depth and for the removal of debris in the soil.  Since ABYC is located on landfill, there is much debris to be removed.  The trenches are needed for the installation of anchors that will have three 20' tie rods leading to the outside of the new wall.  The anchors will ensure that the new wall withstands the pressure of the soil pressing against it.  Once the anchor is in place and the tie rods are secured to both the anchor and the waler (steel beam that runs horizontally along the outside of the seawall - see photo above), the anchor is secured in place with a base of concrete followed by compacted gravel.
3 Tie rods being attached to the wall and to the anchor
Pouring the concrete base on the outside of anchor
Gravel is compacted against the anchor
Once the above steps are completed, the trenches can then be backfilled and the work crew moves on to the next section.  This process involves 3 trenches at a time.

This is a brief description of what is involved.  There are many jobs to be completed and workers are required for a wide variety of jobs.  There is always a need for more help and not all of the work is done on Saturday - if anyone is available during the week, please contact Sue Hamilton (abycworkparty@hotmail.com) or Roger Marsh(penro@sympatico.ca).
